TEMPLATE 1.3.2: School and Community Data
Historical Background
Memphis City Schools broke ground in May 2009 for a $28 million elementary school that would serve the Countrywood and Berryhill families
who became residents of the city of Memphis when those areas were annexed in 2001 and 2005. The architecture and landscaping of the
school was thoughtfully planned in consultation with area’s homeowner associations to ensure that it complemented the overall design of the
community. Memphis City Schools named Rita P. White as the principal of the newly named Riverwood Elementary School in February 2010.
The building opened in August 2010 to receive approximately 860 students into the newly constructed facility. In April of 2010 Riverwood was
named an Optional School for Environmental Science and Community Service.

Facilities
Riverwood Elementary School has fifty-one regular classrooms, a state of the art acoustical music room, computer lab, three teacher planning
rooms, and an environmental science center, library and office complex. The 4000 square foot Environmental Science Center provides
opportunities to create and showcase student work. Riverwood sits on approximately 10 acres. The land was forest land before it was
cleared to build the school. Behind the school there are about 5 wooded acres and a natural stream that will be developed as an outdoor
classroom.

Student Characteristic
Riverwood Elementary serves 866 students in grades Pre-K -5. Currently there are 10 students in Pre-Kindergarten, 157 students in
Kindergarten, 153 in first grade, 133 in second grade, 140 in third grade 151 in fourth grade and 120 in fifth grade. The demographics of the
student body are 52.3% Black, 32.5% White, 8% Asian, 6.9% Hispanic,1% Native American and .1% Native Hawaiian. Four-hundred twenty
three students or 48.8% are economically disadvantaged. Fifty-six students or 7% of students are eligible for our English as a Second
Language Program, however only 21 of them are in grades 3-5 therefore they will not be counted as a cell for NCLB status. Fifty-four students
or 6% of our students are classified as a student with a disability and more than 45 are in grades 3-5 so that will be counted as a cell for NCLB
status.
Additional analysis of the student enrollment at Riverwood Elementary School has identified students in the following subgroups as defined by
NCLB: African American, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and American Indian, Students with Disabilities, Economically
Disadvantaged and English Language Learners.

                                                                                                                                               8

looping, inclusive, supportive lab environments and authentic assessments.

Riverwood uses a variety of programs to individualize instruction to best fit the needs of our students. The Response to Intervention model is
used schoolwide with the following tier reforms to help improve achievement of our lowest achieving students. For Literacy, Tier I is good first
teaching. All teachers use the Scots Foresman Reading Series and supplement it with content area leveled readers and big books. Tier II
Literacy interventions are Ticket To Read, Stanford LAW, Headsprout, Destination Reading, Bailey’s Book House, and ESGY. Ticket to Read
can also be used as an enrichment program because it will move students to higher levels based on their performance. Tier III Literacy is a
pull out program. Students are instructed 30 minutes daily in groups of 6 to 8 students using the Flying Start To Literacy Program. There are
two schoolwide math programs in place that can be used for both enrichment and intervention: Stanford Math, and IXL Math. These programs
are technology delivered and individualize pacing and instruction to fit student needs.

Parental Support
In July of 2010 Riverwood Chartered a PTA. Currently the PTA at Riverwood has approximately 350 members. The PTA is a very active and
vital part of the school community. They have monthly meetings and parent informational sessions. They provide the school with Mystery
Readers, Room Mothers, Lunch Room Monitors and office and classroom volunteers.

School-Business Partnerships
Riverwood currently has two official adopters Delta Fair and Fresh Slices. Currently we are forming a committee of teachers and parents to
begin seeking more community partners.

Staff Characteristics
Every staff member at Riverwood for the 2010-2011 school year was hand selected by Principal, Rita White. Staff members were selected
based on their answers from a written response and oral interview. All Riverwood teachers attended a three day Responsive Classroom
Training Institute in July of 2010. The Riverwood staff is 3% male and 97% female. 87% White and 22% Black. All of Riverwood’s teaching
staff ,100%, are highly qualified.

The Riverwood has various levels of experience. Eight teachers or 13% have from 0 to 5 years of teaching experience while 19 or 32% have
from 6 to 12 years. Twenty teachers or 34% have from 13 to 20 years of teaching experience while 12 or 20% have over 20 years. Sixty-
Eight % of teachers have a Masters degree or higher. Riverwood currently has eight teachers that have National Board Certification.

TEMPLATE 1.5: Data Collection and Analysis

Describe the data collection and analysis process used in determining your strengths and needs.
Because Riverwood Elementary School opened in August 2010, data sources for most academic and non-academic areas are
only available for the current school year. The following data sources are available for analysis:

 Memphis City Schools’ Chancery reports and Research, Evaluation, and Assessment Department provided the team
with data regarding total enrollment, grade level enrollment, student ethnicity, average daily attendance, report cards,
discipline referrals, overage for grade students and free/reduced lunch status.

 A staff data survey provided data regarding teaching assignments, ethnic composition of the staff, gender, years of
       experience, and types of degrees.

 The Tennessee Department of Education website provided data regarding licensure and highly qualified status.

 Discovery Education Formative Assessment Reports provided data in Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics
proficiency levels for students enrolled in grades 3-5.

Analysis of the available academic and non-academic data determined the goals of the School Improvement Plan.

Our team analyzed the enrollment and ethnicity in the grades that will be participating in TCAP testing in Spring 2011. To
meet the requirements established by NCLB, our school will be held accountable for each cell with an enrollment of 45
students of more. Currently we meet this requirement in the following cells:
     All students
     White
     Black
     Economically Disadvantaged

Our team is closely monitoring the enrollment figures and performance levels for Students with Disabilities since the current
enrollment is 44 students.

                                           and NCLB Status 2010 - 2011

Dear Parent/Guardian
We have been notified that Riverwood Elementary Optional School qualifies to receive federal funds under the No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Title I, Part A for this school year. This funding enables us to consolidate and use funds
under Title I, together with other federal, state and local funds, in order to upgrade our entire educational program.
You will receive notices and information throughout the year to keep you informed about the progress of your child
and the status of our school in ensuring that all of our students meet high academic standards. This summer, our state
released a report on the progress our schools are making toward achieving proficiency for 100% of our students under
NCLB. This report identifies whether schools have made “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP) – a simple yes or no grade
based on a complex set of measurements. To make AYP, each school must achieve targets: areas of test participation and
performance measured across subgroups of students (grouped by such categories as race, language proficiency, and
disability). In addition schools must meet attendance targets. If just one subgroup misses just one target, an entire
school does not meet AYP. Riverwood, being in its first year of operation, has not yet had an opportunity to achieve AYP
and is listed as a school in good standing for the 2010 – 2011 school year.
We appreciate your continued involvement in our school and your committed interest in your child’s education. We
look forward to your attendance at school meetings where you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development,
and implementation of our Family Engagement Policy, our School Improvement Plan and our Parent/Teacher/Student
Compact. Riverwood Elementary Optional School, in partnership with our families and our community, is committed to
providing the best education possible for your child. Please know that your questions and insights are always welcome.

Based on an extensive review of student data, teacher data, and school data, our school identified and prioritized measurable objectives by
subgroups as follows:

Objective 1: To increase student achievement in all subgroups in Reading and Language Arts by increasing the number of students who score
at the proficient levels to 50% on Spring 2011, 70% on Spring 2012 and 80% on Spring 2013 TCAP

Objective 2: To increase student achievement in all subgroups in Math by increasing the number of students who score at the proficient levels
to 50% on Spring 2011, 65% on Spring 2012 and 80% on Spring 2013 TCAP

The Professional Development Plan has goals that will provide teachers with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors and resources to meet
our identified objectives:

Goal 1: Increase teacher ability to use data to differentiate instruction using high order thinking skills in Reading and Language Arts, for all
student subgroups.

Goal 2: Increase teacher ability to use data to differentiate instruction using high order thinking skills in Math for all student subgroups.
