Content Standard:  2.2 By the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be able to
                   demonstrate understanding of a variety of linear and non-linear texts in the
                   form of print and non-print materials using a range of strategies to construct
                   meaning.
Learning Standard: 2.2.3 Able to read and demonstrate understanding of texts by: (a) sequencing;
                   (b) predicting with guidance.
Objectives:        To read about animals that can usually be found at the zoo.
Time:              40 minutes

 2. Pupils work in groups of three of four. Teacher asks
 each group to write the letters A - Z vertically, each
 letter on a fresh line. Pupils are then given five minutes
 to try to brainstorm the name of at least one animal
 beginning with each letter of the alphabet. The group
 with the most animals wins.

 Alternatively, the teacher can pre-teach the names of

 Then play the game. The group with the best time
 (shortest time to arrange the animals) will be
 considered the winner.

 Assessment:                                                                               Spelling game
 A representative of each group to come to the board to
 spell the names of the animals in the zoo given by the
 teachers. The group with most correct answers will be
 the winner.

Pupils can identify which animal words match the
pictures using the Animal Flashcards A - Z.

Enrichment:                                                      Further reading
Pupils select a book from the library based on animals.
They must then present their book to the others in the
class, telling why they would or wouldn't recommend
the book. Alternatively, this can be done as a short
book review.
