Topic: Animal Countdown

Objectives: To read about animals that can usually be found at the zoo.
Time: 40 minutes

Activity Teaching & Notes
1. Teacher asks pupils about their experience of going Set induction.

2. Pupils work in groups of three of four. Teacher asks
each group to write the letters A - Z vertically, each
letter on a fresh line. Pupils are then given five minutes
to try to brainstorm the name of at least one animal
beginning with each letter of the alphabet. The group
with the most animals wins.
3. Animal Countdown: this can be done by projecting Read and arrange Animal Flashcards A - Z
the game on the board and completing it as a whole
class, or in a computer lab. Teacher puts the Animal http://learnenglishkids.british

button to "See the Animals" to read the names of the english/animal-countdown
animals first. Ask pupils to read and memorise the
names a few times.
Alternatively, the teacher can pre-teach the names of
the animals from the game using the Animals
Flashcards A - Z.
Then play the game. The group with the best time
(shortest time to arrange the animals) will be
considered the winner.
Assessment: Spelling game
A representative of each group to come to the board to
spell the names of the animals in the zoo given by the
teachers. The group with most correct answers will be

Pupils can identify which animal words match the
pictures using the Animal Flashcards A - Z.
Enrichment: Further reading
Pupils select a book from the library based on animals.
They must then present their book to the others in the
class, telling why they would or wouldn't recommend
the book. Alternatively, this can be done as a short
