MIC Trivia Night Fundraiser – Donations Wanted
The Migrant Information Centre is currently planning our annual Trivia Night
fundraiser. We would greatly appreciate any donations that you could offer for our
silent auction or as prizes on the night or you could bring your family and friends to
have a fun night and help us raise money for our Settlement Support Fund.
The Settlement Support Fund is used to provide food vouchers and support to
individuals/families from refugee backgrounds who are experiencing crisis. All money
raised on the night is used in the fund.
The Trivia Night will be held at 7pm on Saturday 7th May at the Lower Box Hill Town
Hall, 1022 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill.

Celebration of Cultural Diversity in Maroondah
The Migrant Information Centre in partnership with a number of local agencies
including Eastern Volunteers, Department of Justice Maroondah City Council, Mullum
Mullum Gathering Place and Relationships Australia will be holding a Harmony Day
Celebration.
The day will include cultural activities and performances, soccer tournaments,
children‟s activities, arts and crafts stalls and a BBQ. The day will be held at Croydon
Secondary College on 9th April commencing at 12.30pm and finishing at 4.00pm.

Information Sessions for the Chin Community
A program to provide information to people from the Chin Hakha community on
preparing for the Citizenship test will be held on a Monday evening from 28th March
for four weeks. The program will be held in Croydon.

The Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) will be holding information

Introductory English classes for adults
AMCS and Migrant Information Centre Eastern Melbourne joint to offer Introductory
English classes to adults from different communities wanting to improve their English
language skills. The course covers talking, listening, reading and writing.
The class is on every Thursday morning 9.30am to 11.30am, at Ringwood Uniting
Church (Corner Greenwood Ave & Station Street Ringwood). Classes will run until
Thursday 30th June 2011 (holiday break 14th & 21st April).

Healthy Lifestyles Program
The Migrant Information Centre in partnership with Whitehorse Community Health
Service (WCHS) is facilitating the Healthy Lifestyles Program for newly arrived people
from Tibet and members of the Urghur community.
The program includes six sessions on nutrition, how the food we eat affects our
health and well being, a shopping trip to buy low cost nutritious food, cooking
demonstrations and sports and exercise.
The sessions will be held from 6.30pm to 8pm at WCHS, at 43 Carrington Street, Box
Hill. The program will commence on Thursday 2nd March 2011.
The Healthy Lifestyles Project is funded by the Australian Government Department of

Leadership Group for Young Sudanese Men
A leadership group for young Sudanese men aged 15 to 22 years is currently being
held. Program participants are currently organizing activities for their peers to
participate in. The leaders will also be available to provide cultural presentations and
training for service providers.

Multicultural Youth Sports Day
The MIC is holding a multicultural youth sports day on 5th March 2011 at Ringwood
Secondary College between 9am and 5pm. The day will include opportunities for

young people to try different sports including cricket, football, tennis and volleyball
and to watch a soccer and basket ball competition.

Music and Movement Playgroup
The Migrant Information Centre is facilitating a music and movement playgroup for
mothers and young children from refugee backgrounds.
The group meets weekly on Mondays during school terms from 1pm to 2.15pm at
Ringwood Uniting Church, Corner of Station Street and Greenwood Avenue,
Ringwood.

SAY NO TO CRIME
„Say No to Crime‟ is a new project being run by the Migrant Information Centre
(Eastern Melbourne) (MIC), aimed to prevent crime amongst young people from south
Sudan and Burma. Young people from the Hakka Chin, Falam Chin, Zomi and Mizo
communities from Burma and the Dinka Bor community from south Sudan are invited
to apply to become volunteer Youth Ambassadors within their communities. The
Youth Ambassadors will attend a leadership training camp held in the July school
holidays, then attend a series of workshops facilitated by the MIC, where they will
develop and plan an 8 week program targeting other young people within their
communities aimed to prevent crime.
The Youth Ambassadors will work in small groups to develop 8 the week programs
which will be held for two hours per week in late 2011 or early 2012. Each program
will comprise an activity component, such as a sport, music or craft activity, as well as
presentations and discussions with local youth and justice agencies, to educate about
crime prevention and link young people into existing services. A psychologist will also
give two presentations at each program to encourage behaviour change amongst
participants aiming to prevent crime.
Young people wishing to apply to become Youth Ambassadors must be able to attend
the camp and all planning and program sessions. An application form must also be
completed and if successful, young people will be invited to attend an interview at the

Sports Tournaments
In April the Migrant Information Center will be holding sports tournaments, including
soccer, volley ball and table tennis between refugee communities living in the Eastern
Region. The tournaments will be held at April 2nd and in the morning of the 9th April at
Croydon Secondary College.

EMR CALD Aged Care Network
The next meeting of the EMR CALD Aged Care Network is scheduled for Thursday
26 May 2011 from 10am to 12 midday in the Matsudo Room, Box Hill Town Hall,
Whitehorse Road, Box Hill. Please ensure you check parking signs as we cannot
provide permit parking for attendees.

Working with HACC funded organizations that provide services to people
with a disability
We have started to explore ways HACC funded organizations that provide services to
people with a disability can promote their services to CALD communities and engage
more with those communities to understand and plan for their needs. We are holding

Inviting and Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Volunteering Project
The Migrant Information Centre has received funding by the Department of Planning
and Community Development (DPCD), Department of Health (DH) and Victorian
Multicultural Commission (VMC) to encourage volunteer involving organisations to
recruit and support volunteers from CALD backgrounds in their programs, raise
awareness about volunteering in Australia with CALD communities and recognise and
celebrate existing volunteers from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Key activities include:
Information sessions about volunteering for recently arrived and established
CALD community groups (translated information developed and distributed);
Workshops for volunteer involving organisations in the EMR;
Developing a poster and promotional materials targeted at volunteer
organisations about benefits of recruiting CALD volunteers;
Developing a short film and exhibition to celebrate CALD volunteering.

“Come and Try” exercise class for older people from Italian background in
Manningham as part of Manningham Healthy Lifestyles Week on Thursday 3
March at 1.15pm at the Manningham YMCA Wellness Centre, 3 Mitchell

In partnership with Ashburton Support Services, a strength-based exercise
program starts at Ashburton Support Services with the Chinese seniors group.
Classed are held on Thursdays, from 10:30am to 11:30am at 296 High Street,
Ashburton. The Ashburton Support Services Chinese seniors group meets
weekly for social interaction, activities and outings.
MEAP is organizing the seniors from the Camberwell Indian Seniors Forum for
a services tour to the Inner East Community Health Service at the end of
March.
Mobilising Communities Project is working with Knox Leisure Centre to deliver
three exercise classes to Cambodian Seniors in March.
Community Partners Program (CPP) is working with Carers Victoria to raise
awareness of „carers‟ and carers support services among CALD communities.
The work includes developing a multilingual poster, DVD and radio
announcement. Information sessions and educational workshop will be held
with Maltese and Korean communities. The translated „Respite Information
Sheet‟ in Maltese and Korean will also be distributed to community members
at the sessions.

Professional Development Series
Foundation House is the home of Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc,
and provides specialised services for refugees who have survived torture and other
traumatic experiences prior to arriving in Australia.
Foundation House is offering the following training programs: The Refugee
Experience, Course for Incidental Counsellors, Course for Counsellors, Masculinity,
Refugee Flight & Resettlement and Spirituality & Human Service Practice.
Courses for schools include: School‟s in for Refugees, Supporting the Individual and
Classroom Strategies.
Courses for nurses include: Responding to the Psychosocial Impact of Torture &
Trauma and Intensive Introduction.
All sessions are interactive and combine PowerPoint presentations and written and
video case studies with large and small group discussions. Time is allowed for

Bridges to Employment – Migrant Project 2011
Camberwell Salvation Army is pleased to announce that a project in 2011 that aims to
support migrant families in their search for work in Australia. The project does NOT
involve finding work for migrants.
The project focuses on assisting and supporting migrants to understand the
Australian work environment, including work culture, employment search processes
and exposure to various workplaces.
It includes opportunities for the local community to gain a wider understanding of the
issues facing migrants in looking for work and integrating into the local community,
The project will consist of three broad Phases:
Phase 1: Identification of major barriers facing migrants in obtaining work in their
chosen field or commensurate with their qualifications
Phase 2: Provision of education, work exposure, search skills including English
language for the work environment, to the migrant community
Phase 3: Industry and community seminars and workshops focussing on building
mutual understanding of the changing cultural mix in our local community
Expressions of interest in any of the phases, or input to the project may be achieved

EXHIBITIONS
Fighting for Equality Exhibition
The exhibition explores the stories and experiences of people with disabilities from
ethnic backgrounds, their carers and families. The exhibition was prepared in
partnership with ADEC and the Immigration Museum.
The exhibition is open for six months from 26th October 2010 to 1st May 2011,
between 10am to 5pm at the Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street, Melbourne.
The cost of entry is $8 for adults and free for children and concession.

Knox Ethni-City Festival
Knox Festival, Sat 5 and Sun 6 March 2011
The Music of the World Stage will be launched with a “Welcome to Country” in which
the traditional owners will welcome all people to their land, including our community
members from other countries.
All are invited to attend at 11am, Saturday 5 March. Following this everyone is invited
to head across to the Cultural Kitchen where Knox Council Mayor, Councillor Sue
McMillan will feature as the first celebrity chef at 11.30am. The full program for these
two areas includes music, dance and tasty dishes from Afghanistan, Burma, China,
Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Latin America, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and
Turkey.
The Music of the World Stage and Cultural Kitchen will be located in Area C close to
Ferntree Gully Community Centre and Library.

HARMONY DAY
Maroondah Harmony Day Concert
The Maroondah Inter-Faith Network (M.I.N.) is facilitating a HARMONY DAY concert,
to be held on Saturday 19th March, 3pm, in the Karralyka Centre, Mines Road,
Ringwood East.
"Harmony Day" is an international commemoration held on the 21st March each year.
Representatives of different faith communities in the Maroondah area will be
presenting items at the concert, illustrating aspects of their religious faiths and
community life.

Perinatal Mental Health in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse
Communities
Expressions of interest are invited for a forum on the mental health of expectant and
new mothers from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, to be held in April
2011.
As part of the National Perinatal Depression Initiative in Victoria, a forum is to be held
on the mental health of expectant and new mothers from culturally and linguistically
diverse (CALD) communities.
The purpose of the day will be to share information and build links for future
networking, as well as to inform the “Culturally responsive mental health services”
educational component being developed by the VTPU as part of the National
Perinatal Depression Initiative in Victoria.
Primary health workers with relevant experience or knowledge, or CALD and perinatal
services providers are invited to express interest in attending the forum.
Relevant areas of work include, but are not limited to: mental health, primary health,
social support, peer support, group programs with refugee and migrant communities,
ethno-specific, multicultural and perinatal service providers.

Additionally, presentations of relevant work or research in the area of perinatal mental
health are also invited.
The Forum will be held on 5th April 2011 for half a day (time to be announced), and
will be hosted by the Victorian Transcultural Psychiatry Unit (VTPU) at: Brenan Hall,
Aitkenhead Wing, St Vincent's Hospital, 27 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy.

VTPU Seminar and Case Presentation
„Second Generation Migrants Living with Mental Illness – A Neglected Dimension in
Mental Health Practice‟
Magio Konidaris, Education and Service Development Consultant – VTPU
This is a qualitative study, which explores the experience of being a second-
generation migrant of non-English speaking background, living with a major
psychiatric disorder. Three individuals with a diagnosed mental illness from an inner
urban community mental health centre in Melbourne were surveyed using in-depth
interviewing methods.
The seminar will be held at 4pm and the Transcultural Case Presentation will be held
at 4.15pm to 5.15pm VTPU Seminar room, Level 2, Bolte Wing, St Vincent's Hospital,
14 Nicholson St Fitzroy on Wednesday 16th March 2011. Light refreshments will be
provided following the seminar.

SOCIAL SUPPORT
Boroondara Migrant Social Support Network
The Salvation Army is facilitating a Migrant Social Support Network for migrants
residing in the City of Boroondara. The aim of the network is to enhance English
speaking skills and link people to the wider community.
The network will meet at 6.45pm Fridays 11th March, 8th April, 13th May and 10th June
at 7-11 Bowen Street, Camberwell. Light refreshments will be provided and coin
donations are welcome.

The 6th Boroondara Volunteer Expo
The Boroondara Volunteer Expo will provide an opportunity for people to talk with
community organisations about the many and varied volunteer opportunities available
to them.

The cost is $5 per person or $15 per family (maximum 5 people in a family). Children
are welcome including boys under 5 years.

Multicultural Youth Network
The Centre for Multicultural Youth, in partnership with the Victorian Co-Operative
on Children’s Services for Ethnic Groups, invites youth workers to the first
Statewide Multicultural Youth Issues Network meeting of 2011, Make it Just: Youth
Justice and Young People from Refugee and Migrant Backgrounds.
If you work with young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds or in the youth
justice system please join us to learn more about their experiences. Some topics this
forum will cover include:
An overview of the Youth Justice System
The role that families and communities can play in supporting young people in the
system and after they exit
Available services
An expert panel discussion around practical strategies to support young people
and their families
The forum will be held at 9am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 8th March at The Blue Room at
the Melbourne Multicultural Hub (506 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne - opposite the
Queen Victoria Market).
