					    AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

   O beautiful for spacious skies,
     For amber waves of grain.
   For purple mountain majesties
       Above the fruited plain!
         America! America!
God shed His grace on thee.
And crown thy good with brotherhood
      From sea to shining sea.

    O beautiful for patriot dream
    That sees, beyond the years.
    Thine alabaster cities gleam,
    Undimmed by human tears!
         America! America!
God shed His grace on thee.
And crown thy good with brotherhood
      From sea to shining sea.

              2010 Commencement Speaker
Mike Saunders came to Isothermal Community
College much in the same way that thousands of
others have over the years. The Rutherford County
textile mill where he worked, Burlington Industries’
J.C. Cowan Plant, ceased manufacturing and closed
its doors in the late 1990s. Saunders had worked at
the plant for about 26 years and was the human
resources director for the operation for 15 years.

He took a job at Watts Regulator in the HR
department for about 14 months before coming to
the college in its Customized Training and
Development Department. There, Mike has used his
expertise in personnel and training programs to help
thousands of students get the training needed to go
to work for scores of industrial clients. He has
worked for Isothermal for nearly 10 years and is now the director of
Customized Training. His main task is to respond to the needs of industry in
Rutherford County and to develop training programs for the area’s ever-
changing workforce.

Mike grew up in Columbia, S.C. and attended high school there. He
graduated from Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., with a BA in Business
Administration and Economics with minors in Sociology and Psychology. He
attended graduate school at N.C. State University.
Mike is married to Mary Segesky Saunders of Fayetteville. The couple has
two married daughters, Meri Vernon and Dani Culp, and 1 granddaughter.

Mike’s career has included 30 years in human resources at companies
including Exide, Baxter, Burlington and Watts. He taught in the Cumberland
County School System and served as a member of the 169th Air National
Guard Fighter Squadron.

Mike volunteers with Rutherford Communities in Schools and Rutherford
Life Services. He is a member of Kiwanis of Forest City and Salem United
Methodist Church.

                       THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION
For the benefit of our visitors the following information reported from "An
Academic Costume Code and Ceremony Guide" prepared by the American
Council on Education may prove helpful in identifying the costumes you will
see in the Commencement Procession.

The history of academic dress reaches far back into the earliest day of the
oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all "Doctors, Licentiates,
and Bachelors" of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the
second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges prescribed the
wearing of a long gown. When American colleges desired to adopt some suitable
system of academic apparel, a conference was held at Columbia University in
1895 drawing up an acceptable academic dress code. This code, with only
small modifications made in 1959, is still in force. The patterns you will see are
all traditional and represent both the degree and field of learning.

Black is the recommended color for all academic gowns. Bachelor's and
master's gowns are untrimmed. Doctor's gowns are faced with black velvet,
with three bars across the sleeves. The colors you will see in the hoods and
gowns of our faculty represent the various fields in which the degrees were
taken:
      Apricot: Nursing Olive-Green: Pharmacy
      Brown: Fine Arts Orange: Engineering
      Citron: Social Work Pink: Music
      Crimson: Journalism Purple: Law
Dark Blue: Philosophy Sage Green: Physical Education
Golden Yellow: Science Salmon Pink: Public Health
      Green: Medicine Scarlet: Theology
Lemon-Yellow: Library Science Yellow-Brown: Business, Accounting
      Light-Blue: Education White: Arts, Humanities
      Lilac: Dentistry

The hoods, differing in length for the three degrees, bachelor's, master's, and
doctor's are lined with the official colors of the university or college conferring
the degree. Hoods are edged and bound with velvet on the color appropriate for
the degree.

Mortarboards are the approved headgear. The tassel, worn on the left side of
the cap, may be of gold if the holder has a doctor's degree.
