Cheryl Cullen (38) from Loughton, Essex, was today announced as the National winner of
the 2004 handbag.com Barclays Business Plan Awards. Cheryl took pole position after
winning the overall award, as well as the category award for Most Innovative Business Idea,
with her business plan for Kitten Kit - a portable pole-dancing kit with exercise video, that
introduces a fun approach to working out in the home.

Nigel Griffiths MP, Minister for Small Business Enterprise presented Cheryl with her award
and a year-long business support package worth £10,000, including personal mentoring from
a Barclays’ business marketing expert and the latest business technology from
Clearlybusiness.com. It also includes £5,000 worth of advertising in Thomson Local

the woman’s domain, keeping her fit and having fun in her own home,” said Cheryl. “Winning
this award is fantastic. It will help me to further promote and grow the Kitten Kit business. It
allows me to turn my dream into reality and lends much needed support for my first year of
business.”

The handbag.com Barclays Business Plan Awards aims to encourage more women into
business offering them a platform to launch their business idea and guide them through the

Sponsored by Barclays, with prize donations from organisations such as Thomson Local
directories, the Awards attracted entries from a wide variety of businesses - kids safety
clothing to juice bars, and an ethical fashion label to an events company - representing the
breadth of business ideas UK women are currently developing.

Commenting on the awards, Alicen Stenner, Brand Director of handbag.com said, “The
quality and number of business plan entries to our awards was truly inspirational and shows
the impact women are making and set to make in the UK business market.

“While there were many outstanding business plans, Cheryl Cullen had the winning
combination of a truly unique business idea, a strong understanding of her market and a
level of passion to make her business a success. We wish her the best of luck and will be
supporting her progress over the next 12 months.”

Louise Fowler, Marketing Director of Barclays Small Business Banking and panel judge,
added: “Female entrepreneurs are making a major impact in the UK, contributing to wealth
and job creation and this is demonstrated by the innovativeness of Cheryl’s business, which
has identified a popular exercise trend in its infancy. We are looking forward to supporting
Cheryl using our expertise, to help her grow and carve out a niche in the market to enable
her to capitalize on this.”

This year’s judges included representatives from handbag.com, Barclays, and Business
Link, as well as Sahar Hashemi, co-founder of Coffee Republic, Nicola Gewirtz – founder of
Lola Rose, and George Derbyshire, CEO of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies.
