Summary This application note provides instructions regarding how to manually uninstall Kofax Capture 8.0's Microsoft SQL
           Server 2005 Express
Revision 1.0

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Uninstall Overview
A failed Kofax Capture 8.0 install or uninstall of Kofax Capture 8.0 may require a manual removal of
Kofax Capture 8.0’s Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. This document provides several
recommendations to accomplish this.
Normally, it is sufficient to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Express via the Kofax Capture entry in Windows
Add/Remove Programs. However, if Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs does not successfully
remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, it is possible to manually remove all portions of Microsoft
SQL Server 2005 Express by following the steps below.
The recommended order to remove both Kofax Capture 8.0 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express is
described below.
    1. Backup Kofax Capture 8’s Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express database
    2. Uninstall Kofax Capture 8.0 using Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs
    3. Run the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Wizard
    4. Manual uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express components
    5. Manual removal (not using MSI)

Important: Try the options in the order they are listed. Do not try an option lower down in the list
unless the options above it have already failed.

Backup Kofax Capture 8’s Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express database
If your Kofax Capture product is using the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express database and has been
used to process data and you need to back up your data, please review the Backing Up and Restoring A
Standard Kofax Capture / Ascent Capture Database application note document located on the Kofax
Capture 8 Application Notes Web page before going further.

Uninstall Kofax Capture 8.0 Using Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs
To uninstall Kofax Capture 8.0, please follow the instructions in the Kofax Capture 8 Uninstallation
Instructions application note document located on the Kofax Capture 8 Application Notes Web page.
Please note the following warning posted on page 1 of the Kofax Capture 8 Release Notes (shown
below).

 Warning When Uninstalling Kofax Capture
If you use the Add or Remove Programs utility from the Windows Control Panel to uninstall Kofax
Capture, you will lose your batch classes, active batches, and other settings without warning. When
upgrading to Kofax Capture 8, do not uninstall earlier releases if you want to keep these items.

Advisory
The methods described below are not recommended methods of uninstalling Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Express. These methods should only be attempted when Kofax Capture 8 and SQL Server Express
cannot be uninstalled by using Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs. Please take all possible
precautions before attempting any of the procedures described below, including a complete backup or
'ghosting' of the machine. If the methods described below fail to restore your system to a state in which
Kofax Capture 8.0 can be successfully installed, you may need to start over with a fresh install of the
operating system.
Please carefully review the following options before proceeding.

We strongly recommend that you review the Microsoft article “How to uninstall an instance of SQL
Server 2005 manually”, located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967, prior to manually removing
the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 program components. (URL valid as of the date of this document)

Locate the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files
Each of the following options except manual removal (not using MSI) requires that Microsoft SQL Server
Setup Support Files be installed. In Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs, make sure that Microsoft
SQL Server Setup Support Files appears in the list of installed programs. If this entry does not appear as
installed, you must install it from Microsoft’s sqlsupport.msi before proceeding. See the section below on
accessing the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express .msi files for details on how to obtain the necessary
.msi files.

Accessing the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express .msi Files
    1. Insert your Kofax Capture 8.0 installation CD 1 of 2 into your CD or DVD drive. When the
installation auto-launches, click Browse the CD.
    2. When the CD contents are displayed, browse to the \Kofax Capture\Install.

                                                                                                    Page 2

                                                                                       Application Note

  3. Locate the SQLEXPR.exe file.

Note: When you run this file, you must note the location of the temporary path where the
       extracted files are saved.
One of the easiest ways capture this information is to press the PrtScn button on your
keyboard when the Extracting Files window appears, to capture the location in your system’s
memory. You can then paste (using Ctrl-V or Paste from the Edit menu) the captured picture
into Microsoft Paint (launch by using Start, Run, type in mspaint and click OK). We
recommend that you open Microsoft Paint before executing the SQLEXPR.exe file.

  4. Launch the SQLEXPR.exe file.
  5. While it is extracting the files, capture the To Directory information as described above.

Note: Do not worry if you do not manage to capture the extraction location, this document will
describe another way to obtain this information later.

  6. Once the files have completed extracting, a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup End User License
Agreement Window will appear. You must leave this window open while you complete the
     remainder of the steps.

                                                                                                  Page 3

                                                                                        Application Note

  7. Browse to the folder where the files were extracted and select the setup sub-folder.

Note: If you did not locate the path during the extraction process, you can search your local
root drive for the files described below.

This is where you will find sqlrun_sql.msi, sqlsupport.msi, and other MSI files related to Microsoft
      SQL Server 2005 Express setup.

  8. You may close SQLEXPR.exe by clicking Cancel on the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup End
User License Agreement Window and answering Yes to the Are you sure you want to cancel
Setup? prompt only after finishing any process (described in the remainder of this document)
     requesting the MSI files.

                                                                                                     Page 4

                                                                                          Application Note

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Wizard
The preferred Microsoft SQL Server 2005 uninstallation method is to run the following command at a
command line or run menu: (quotes included):
    "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\ARPWrapper.exe"
    /Remove
This will start the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Wizard and will allow you to select an instance
of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to uninstall. You will need to run this command for every instance of
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 you want to uninstall. Once you uninstall the last instance of Microsoft SQL
Server 2005, all the related components will be removed as well.

Note: Once the last instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 has been uninstalled, you may need to
return to Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server Native
 Client.

Manual Uninstall of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Components
If the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Wizard is unavailable, then the Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express components must be removed manually one at a time. Each component can be
uninstalled by plugging the component’s GUID into the following command:
    start /wait msiexec /x {GUID} SKIPREDISTPREREQS=1
To find the GUID for a particular component, search for the appropriate name within the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. If there was any
prior instance of Microsoft SQL Server Express installed before Kofax Capture then the AscentCapture
instance will not be using the default GUID. The uninstallation order, along with the default GUIDs are:
    1. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (ASCENTCAPTURE) –
       {2AFFFDD7-ED85-4A90-8C52-5DA9EBDC9B8F}
    2. MSXML 6.0 Parser – {A43BF6A5-D5F0-4AAA-BF41-65995063EC44}
    3. Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer – {E9F44C98-B8B6-480F-AF7B-E42A0A46F4E3}
    4. SQL Server Native Client – {F9B3DD02-B0B3-42E9-8650-030DFF0D133D}
    5. Server Setup Support Files (English) – {53F5C3EE-05ED-4830-994B-50B2F0D50FCE}
You must then remove all the files located in the following folders including sub-folders and their contents.
    • Kofax Capture install folders (Defaults as follows)
                         C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kofax\Capture
                         C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kofax\CaptureSV
                         C:\Program Files\Kofax\CaptureSS
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server

                                                                                                       Page 5

                                                                                           Application Note

Manual Removal (Not Using MSI)
Manually removing files not using Microsoft Installers (MSI) should be an absolute last resort that you
must use because none of the above uninstallation options were successful.
    1. Stop all related services: Kofax Capture Service (if present), SQL Server (ASCENTCAPTURE),
any other SQL Server (<Instance Name>), SQL Server Active Directory Helper, SQL Server
       Browser, SQL Server VSS Writer
    2. Remove all files in the Kofax Capture install directory. The default location of the database files is
       C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kofax\Capture\Server. Remove all files in
       C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server.
    3. Remove related Windows Registry entries such as:
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Native Client
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server 2005
            Redist
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. The following service related registry keys should also be deleted:
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQL$ASCENTCAPT
            URE
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQLServerADHel
            per
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLBrowser
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLWriter
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Applica
            tion\MSSQL$ASCENTCAPTURE
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Applica
            tion\SQLCTR$ASCENTCAPTURE
    5. Run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) to
remove any entry related to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express that remains in Add/Remove
Programs. (URL valid as of the date of this document)
