“Powered by Dell™ and customized for NCR”

System Overview
The NCR S2600 is NCR‟s feature-optimized workgroup class server. The NCR S2600 replaces the NCR
S29. The S2600 introduces a new level of functionality into the workgroup segment by offering the latest
in processing, chipset, I/O and storage technologies and more high availability features.

The NCR S2600 is a rackable tower server that delivers unprecedented levels of performance,
expandability and performance. The NCR S2600 utilizes the Intel Xeon processors and the Intel E7500
chipset, DDR SDRAM memory, PCI-X expansion slots, U320 RAID-capable hard drives and Gigabit
Ethernet networking. With seven open PCI-X slots, up to 8 hot-pluggable hard drives, 6GB of maximum
memory and numerous embedded features, the NCR S2600 enables customers to deploy a server to
support a wide range of workloads from data centers to small workgroups.

The NCR S2600 also offers availability features designed to minimize server downtime. Features such as
hot plug redundant fans, power supplies and hard drives as well as embedded RAID with battery backed
cache, which reduces the need to shutdown the server to fix a component failure.

The NCR S2600 is designed to provide improved system performance, and to provide the headroom
customers need to grow with the increasing demand for server resources. The NCR S2600 offers more
PEAK bandwidth to memory due to the more powerful processors, faster front side bus speeds, higher
levels of memory scalability, and 64-but/133MHz PCI-X for higher I/O throughput.

Intel has introduced Hyper-Threading Technology on the Xeon line processors. Hyper-Threading Technology will
provide added performance on multithreaded code and multitasking operations through better utilization of processor
resources. In short, Hyper-Threading will cause the OS to view the processor as two logical processors. One
physical processor looks like two logical processors to the OS and applications. This does not mean that XEON
processors have two completely separate processors on one die. Instead, the processors has duplicate
architectural states that share a single execution resource, so the execution resource, which is often idle in DP
servers today, will be utilized more efficiently. As a result, Hyper-threading will provide improved reaction and
response time because multiple tasks can be run simultaneously. As a result, the technology should enable a
platform to support more users or process more transactions than a processor without this technology.

Power Supplies: The NCR S2600 offers you two power supply options: (1) Non-Redundant Power Supply or
(2) Redundant Power Supply. The non-redundant power supply is a single front-loading 730W power supply.
This unit provides power to all of the circuitry provided in the platform. Power is “soft-switched”, allowing power
cycling via a switch on the front of the system enclosure, or via software controller.

The Redundant Power Supply offers a hot-plug redundant power supply to insure that a system will not fail in the
event that one of the power supplies fails. In addition, the dual power - supply also enables customers to route
power from two different sources to a single server.

Can you upgrade an NCR S2600 with non-redundant power supplies to redundant power supplies? Yes, all you
need to do is purchase and plug in the second power supply (customer kit). The NCR S2600 comes with a
power supply distribution board that detects the second supply being installed or removed in order to control the
power applied to the system.

Memory: The NCR S2600 system board has six 72-bit (168-pin) sockets for DDR memory modules. DDR
(Double Data Rate) is the next generation of SDRAM standard using a double data rate clocking technique
running at a 200MHz data rate for a maximum bandwidth of 3.2GB/s. The NCR S2600 supports a minimum of
256MB DDR SDRAM memory and a max of 6GB DDR SDRAM. The memory system supports only 2-way
interleaved memory configurations. The DIMMs have to be identical within a pair but a pair does not have to be
identical to any other pair. The NCR S2600 requires PC2100 DDR DRAM, which is different than the PC133
SDRAM used on the NCR S1400. PC133 memory is not supported on the NCR S2600.

Tape Drives: The NCR S2600 has a removable media cage with two bays that can be used for tape drives or
disk drives, but not both. To explain, as a tape drive cage, the tape drive is connected to a cable that is
connected to the onboard SCSI controller or the optional 39160 SCSI controller. As a drive cage, the cage
includes a drive backplane that allows SCA (Hot-Plug) SCSI drives to be installed. For further information on
using the removable media cage for hard drives, please refer to the disk drive section.

The tape drive is not a required feature; however, it is recommended if no other backup process is being used.
As mentioned above, the NCR S2600 has 2 x 5.25” user accessible bays. A max of one tape drive can be
ordered per configuration.

VERY IMPORTANT: The NCR S2600 has an embedded LSI Logic 53C1030 Dual Integrated PCI Ultra320 LVD
SCSI controller. For most configurations, one of the Embedded SCSI controller‟s channels would be used to
connect the tape drive; however, when both channels of the embedded SCSI controller are in use and a tape
drive is required, you must order an additional SCSI controller such as the 39160 SCSI controller. In an attempt
to simplify the ordering process, a feature for each tape back up unit has been created bundling a 39160
SCSI controller (F415, F419, F427 and F432). The SCSI controller w/ Tape Drive option should be ordered
when both channels of the embedded SCSI controller are being used and the customer requires a tape
drive.

When is the embedded SCSI controller not available? (1) When using a 2 x 3 configuration, which means two
channels with up to 3 drives per channel.

Embedded NIC: The NCR S2600 includes a single embedded Gigabit Ethernet NIC from Intel (82544). The
embedded Gigabit NIC provides customers with a cost effective, high performance solution when used as the
primary LAN controller. This LAN on Motherboard implementation provides full support for Gigabit Ethernet over
the most commonly occurring wiring infrastructure today, Category 5 copper cable. This is a 10/100/1000 BaseT
product that will support any of the three speeds of BaseT Ethernet, 10Mbit, 100Mbits or 1000Mbits.

Additional NIC’s: For additional Availability and Fail Over NIC support, the NCR S2600 offers the following:
(1) F232 - Intel 10/100 Security Ethernet Pro 1000 with IPSEC Intel – designed to improve system performance
and availability by offloading IPSec encryption functions from the system CPU, and providing for automatic
failover to a secondary NIC in the event of a NIC failure.
(2) F233 – Intel 10/100 Dual Port Pro 100 Dual Port
(3) F234 – Intel 10/100/1000 Copper Pro 1000XT (copper)
(4) F235 – Intel 10/100/1000 Fiber Pro 1000F (fibre)

The NCR S2600 supports 7 PCI slots – 2 x 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X, 4 x 64-bit/100MHz PCI-X and 1 x 32-bit/66MHz
PCI. The S2600 can support a max of 7 additional NIC‟s. The combination of RAID cards, NIC cards, SCSI
cards and modems cannot exceed 7.

VERY IMPORTANT: F006 must be placed on the order when an additional NIC is not required.

Remote Manageability: The NCR S2600 design incorporates the optional Embedded Remote Access
(ERA/O), which is a robust remote management solution. ERA/O is a SAF-TE processor card on a system
board connector, that does not consume a PCI expansion slot. ERA/O allows an administrator in one location to
take control of a server at a different location all without taking up a slot. (1) dial in/dial out to console capability
via NIC or modem line, (2) console redirection, (3) view event logs for diagnosis purposes, (4) system reset and
power cycling, (5) server failure or power outage accessibility, and (6) ESM III support. ERA/O is particularly
valuable for racked servers because it enables customers to deploy their servers without keyboard, video or
mouse cables.

(2) F201 – Two channels with 3 drives each (2 x 3). A backplane daughtercard is required for the 2 x 3
configuration. 2 x 3 indicates two channels with up to 3 drives per channel. The daughter card
electronically divides the single backplane into two separate (three drive each) backplanes. The daughter
card is automatically added at the manufacturing site. This does not have to be ordered separately.
Note: When ordering the 2 x 3 SCSI backplane configuration, you cannot add disk drives to the removable
media cage. Also if additional SCSI devices are required such as a SCSI tape drive, you must order an
additional SCSI controller.
(3) F202 & F203 - The 1 x 6 configuration leaves the second onboard SCSI channel available for a third
configuration. The third configuration consists of 1 channel connected with 6 drives (1 x 6) and 1 channel
connected with 2 drives (1 x 2) in the optional 2 drive media cage (both the 1x6 and the 1x2 backplane must
be ordered). The 2 drives of the 1 x 2 configuration are available through the Removable Media Cage that
contains a 2-drive backplane. If you plan to place disk drives in the media bay, you must order either F202
or F203, depending on your chassis orientation, to obtain the disk drive backplane. The disk drives will not
operate in the media bay cage without a disk drive backplane. A Manufacturing but not Technical
Limitation: Disk drives placed in the media cage must be added via the embedded RAID controller
(PERC4 Di) or an add-in RAID controller. The embedded SCSI controller cannot be used to attached
disk drives in the media cage!

Note: Benefit of drives in removable media cage? Capacity and splitting OS and data for better performance.

ATTENTION: The SCSI backplane is SAF-TE compliant. SAF-TE (SCSI Accessed Fault-Tolerance Enclosure)
specifications require a specialized chipset that provides detailed drive and enclosure status via the SCSI bus.
SAF-TE aspects include alert and status signaling on the presence and state of drives, allow for hot-pluggable
insertion and removal of drives, and provide LED identification for drive activity and fault conditions.

SCSI CONTROLLERS (NON-RAID) - The NCR S2600 implements dual internal SCSI channels on the
system board, providing two Ultra320/LVD (U320) channels. The primary SCSI channel will be used on the LSI
Logic U320 SCSI chip. This will support U320 speed SCSI transactions across an 80-pin interface to the SCSI
Backplane. Additionally, the U320/LVD interface is fully backward compatible with the previous generation of
single-ended Ultra/Wide peripherals.

EMBEDDED SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID TO 1 X 6 BACKPLANE (F130):
When F130 is ordered all six hard drives are connected to Channel A of the EMBEDDED U320 controller. A
minimum of 1 hard drive is required and drives are attached in ascending order. Drive sizes and speeds do
NOT have to match. Furthermore, the slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to
the combination IDE/floppy controller. Optional SCSI devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to Channel B of
the embedded SCSI controller, and if the external SCSI cable is ordered it will be cabled to channel B of the
embedded SCSI controller.

EMBEDDED SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID TO 2 X 3 BACKPLANE (F131):
When F131 is ordered the top backplane segment, housing a minimum of 2 drives and a max of 3, is connected
to Channel A of the embedded SCSI controller. The bottom segment, housing another 2-3 disk drives, is
connected to Channel B. The boot drive will be in the top HDD bay and be connected to Channel A of the SCSI
controller. Drive capacities and speeds do not have to match. The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the
top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller. If additional internal or external SCSI
storage devices are required, a 39160 SCSI controller must be added.

F130 or F131 must be ordered when the customer requires a non-RAID solution for the internal drives.
F130 and F131 call for the internal SCSI backplane (6 drive bays) and/or optional SCSI Tape Back Up to
be attached to the embedded dual channel SCSI controller. If a RAID solution is required, do not order
F130 or F131 but review the RAID section within this document. Note: You cannot mix SCSI and RAID
configurations within the internal SCSI backplane.

ADDITIONAL SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID:
The 39160 SCSI Controller (F129) can be used to connect the NCR S2600 to an LVD external device such as
the PowerVault JBOD discussed later in the document. The 39160 SCSI controller is also needed to connect
internal or external SCSI storage devices when both channels of the onboard SCSI controller are in use.

Note: The S2600 has 7 total PCI slots (2 PCI-X 64-bit slots 133MHz, 4 PCI-X 64-bit slots 100MHz, 1PCI 32-bit
slot 33MHz). The combination of RAID cards, NIC cards, SCSI cards and modems cannot exceed 7.

RAID CONTROLLERS:
 The NCR S2600 offers a high performance Ultra320 RAID on-board solution entitled PERC 4/Di that uses
the LSI Logic 53C1030 Dual Integrated PCI Ultra320 LVD SCSI controller. PERC 4/DI includes Battery
Back-up, which improves the system performance and availability. The battery backup enables customers
to use write-back and read-ahead caching for overall improved write and read performance. The battery
Backup also provides additional availability of power for up to 24 hours to preserve cache contents in the
event of a power outage and when the controller is running in write-back mode. Once enabled, the
embedded hardware uses/converts the onboard U320 SCSI controllers to provide RAID levels 0, 1, 5 and
    10. PERC 4/Di does not support external SCSI storage arrays. The PERC 4/Di does not support SCSI
    clustering.
 PERC3/DC is a 64-bit/66MHz PCI card that contains its own RAID processor, 128MB of cache memory with
battery backup (transportable), and two Ultra3/LVD SCSI channels. The portability of the cache is a key
difference between this solution and the PERC 4/Di because it allows a user to transfer the cache contents
on failed card to a new working card. The PERC 4/Di cache cannot be transported to a new system board,
so the primary value of the battery backup on the PERC 4/Di is to preserve the cache contents during a
    power outage.
 PERC3/QC is the same as the PERC3/DC PCI card but with more channels. QC stands for Quad
    Channel.
 The PERC 3/DC card can handle two internal, two external or one internal – one external connection
    simultaneously.
 The PERC 3/QC card can handle two internal and two external, one internal and three external or four
    external connections simultaneously.
RESTRICTIONS:
 F272 (2 INTERNAL CHANNELS & 2 EXTERNAL CHANNELS) CANNOT BE ORDERED WITH THE 1X6
BACKPLANE. YOU MUST ORDER THE 2 X 3 BACKPLANE OR THE 1X2 OPTION, WHICH IS
PLACING DISK DRIVES NOT ONLY IN THE DISK DRIVE BAY BUT ALSO IN THE REMOVABLE
    MEDIA BAY.
 F274 (2 INTERNAL CHANNELS & 0 EXTERNAL CHANNELS) CANNOT BE ORDERED WITH THE 1 X6
BACKPLANE. YOU MUST ORDER THE 2 X 3 BACKPLANE OR THE 1X2 OPTION, WHICH IS PLACING
DISK DRIVES NOT ONLY IN THE DISK DRIVE BAY BUT ALSO IN THE REMOVABLE MEDIA BAY.
The PERC 3/DC and PERC 3/QC require a destination for all of the internal connectors. When ordering
the 1x6 configurations only one connector on the RAID controller is used; thus, you must choose F271
or F275 (1 internal connector). When ordering the 1x2 or the 2x3 configurations, you must choose
between F272 and F274.
Note: Maximum one RAID controller per configuration.
See note 18 for more information on the supported RAID controllers.

RAID FACTORY CONFIGURATIONS: A single RAID Level configuration must be selected when
ordering a SCSI RAID Controller:

(RAID 0) – Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance - minimum 1 drive in disk drive bay
(RAID 1) – Mirroring - max of two disk drives
(RAID 5) – Striping with Distributed Parity – minimum of 3 disk drives
(RAID 10) – Striping of mirrored arrays – minimum of 4 disk drives

RAID Level Configuration Details :
 Motherboard RAID 0,1,5 w/ No hard drives in the media bay (F100, F101, F102) – The Slim floppy and
CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, Optional
SCSI devices (SCSI tapes not disk drives) in the peripheral bays are cabled to channel B of the embedded
SCSI controller, all hard drives are connected to channel A of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB
(RAID On Motherboard) enabled. All drives must have same capacity and speed.
 Add in RAID 0,1,5 w/ No hard drives in the media bay (F103, F104, F105) – The slim floppy and CD-
ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, optional SCSI
devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to channel A of the embedded SCSI controller, and the drives in
the HDD drive bay are connected to one RAID controller. All drives must have the same capacity and
    speed drives in HDD bay.
 Motherboard RAID 0, 1, 5 (1x6 backplane) and Drives in the media bay (F106, F107, F108) – The slim
floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy conroller, 2
x 1 HDD cage in media bay is cabled to Channel A of the embedded SCSI controller with ROMB enabled,
the internal drives (HDD Bay) are connected to Channel B of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB
enabled. Drives in peripheral bay must be the same capacity and speed and all drives in the HDD Bay
must have the same capacity and speed. However, drives in the peripheral bay may differ in size/speed
from drives in the HDD bay. No Internal tape is supported in these configurations.
 Add In RAID 0, 1, 5 (1x6 backplane) and Drives in the media bay (F109, F110, F111) – The slim floppy
and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, and the
2 x 1” HDD cage in media bay is cabled to Channel A of the add-in RAID controller. Drives in the peripheral
bay must be the same capacity. The internal drives (HDD Bay) are connected to Channel B of the add-in
RAID controller. All drives must have the same capacity in the HDD Bay. However, hard drives in the
peripheral bay do not have to be the same capacity/speed as the drives in the HDD bay. No internal tape is
    supported in these configurations.
 Motherboard RAID 0, 1, 5 (2x3 backplane) with no disk drives in the media bay (F112, F113, F114) –
The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy
controller, a 39160 card is added if internal or external SCSI storage devices are needed because in these
configurations the Motherboard RAID uses both onboard SCSI controllers. The top backplane segment will
be connected to channel A of the embedded U320 SCSI controller. The bottom segment will be connected
to Channel B. ROMB will be activated on both channels. A minimum of 2 drives are required and must be
distributed evenly across both segments of the backplane starting with drive 0 on each segment and
moving down. You must have same capacity and speed drives in each segment of the backplane in the
HDD bay. Drives on different channels of the backplane can differ in capacity and speed from each other.
 Add In RAID 0, 1, 5 (2x3 backplane) with no disk drives in the media bay (F115, F116, F117) – The
slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy
controller and the optional SCSI devices (tape device only) in the peripheral bays are cabled to channel A of
the embedded SCSI controller. The top backplane segment will be connected to channel A of the add -in
RAID controller. The bottom segment will be connected to Channel B of the add-in RAID controller. Must
have same capacity and speed drives n each segment of the backplane in th HDD bay. Drives on different
channels of the backplane can differ in capacity and speed from each other.
 Motherboard RAID 10 (1x6) with no disk drives in the media bay (F118) – Optional SCSI devices in the
peripheral bays are cabled to Channel B of the embedded SCSI controller. All hard drives are connected to
Channel A of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB enabled. Must have same capacity and speed
    drives.
 Add in RAID 10 (1x6) with no disk drives in the media bay (F119) – Optional SCSI devices in the
peripheral bays are cabled to Channel A and the drives in the Hard Drive bay are connected to one RAID
controller. Must have same capacity and speed drives in HDD bay.

WARNING: IF A RAID CONTROLLER IS SELECTED, A RAID LEVEL MUST ALSO BE SELECTED OR THE
ORDER WILL BE REJECTED.

SCSI Disk Drives: The minimum of one SCSI SCA (hot-pluggable) disk drive and the maximum of 8 disk
drives (2 being placed in the external 5.25” bays) can be installed in the NCR S2600. The total capacity
available in the S2600 is 584GB (8 x 73GB hot plug capable drives).

Drives of varying capacities cannot be used in a RAID subsystem. When configuring redundant Logical drives,
the user should keep drives of the same capacity assigned to the same drive group. Whenever drives with
different capacities are assigned to the same redundant drive group, all drives in the group will be automatically
down-sized to match the small drives in the group.

Drives of varying capacities can be used in a non-RAID solution.

Only the U320 disk drives are supported on the NCR S2600, and the S2600 does not support IDE disk
drives.

Disk Drive Vendors: There are several disk drive vendors supported by this platform: In an attempt to reduce
the possibility of a stop ship due to supply constraints, we are releasing one feature per disk drive size not per
vendor. All hard drive suppliers have restricted the size and characteristics of the drives they supply to our OEM
supplier, so all the drives, no matter the vendor, look the same. There are only 2 ways to determine the supplier
of a hard drive: (1) Look at the drive or 2) issue a query command and interpret the model number returned.
Functionally all drives of the same size category (18 Gig, 36 Gig, etc.) appear identical and will have no impact
on Raid or other operations within the system.

Additional Notes: Media and the cleaning cartridge are included with the DLT, SDLT and the LTO Tape Drives.
Additional media and cleaning cartridges can be ordered by ordering the appropriate features listed below.

the most commonly occurring wiring infrastructure today, Category 5 copper cable.

(5) F232 - Intel 10/100 Security Ethernet Pro 1000 with IPSEC Intel – designed to improve system performance
and availability by offloading IPSec encryption functions from the system CPU, and providing for automatic
failover to a secondary NIC in the event of a NIC failure.
(6) F233 – Intel 10/100 Dual Port Pro 100 Dual Port
(7) F234 – Intel 10/100/1000 Copper Pro 1000XT (copper)
(8) F235 – Intel 10/100/1000 Fiber Pro 1000F (fibre)

ERA/O also offers: (1) dial in/dial out to
console capability via NIC or modem line, (2) console redirection, (3) view event logs for diagnosis purposes, (4)
system reset and power cycling, (5) server failure or power outage accessibility, and (6) ESM III support. ERA/O
is particularly valuable for racked servers because it enables customers to deploy their servers without keyboard,
video or mouse cables.

SCSI BACKPLANE CONFIGURATIONS
(4) F200 - One Channel with 6 drives (1 x 6) – 1 x 6 refers to the number of channels times the number of
drives on the channel. A 1 x 6 would be one channel with up to six drives.
(5) F201 – Two channels with 3 drives each (2 x 3).
(6) F202 & F203 - The 1 x 6 configuration leaves the second onboard SCSI channel available for a third
configuration. The third configuration consists of 1 channel connected with 6 drives (1 x 6) and 1 channel
connected with 2 drives (1 x 2) in the optional 2 drive media cage. The 2 drives of the 1 x 2 configuration
are available through the Removable Media Cage that contains a 2-drive backplane. If you plan to place
disk drives in the media bay, you must order either F202 or F203, depending on your chassis orientation, to
obtain the disk drive backplane. The disk drives will not operate in the media bay cage without a disk drive
backplane. A Manufacturing but not Technical Limitation: Disk drives placed in the media cage
must be added via the embedded RAID controller (PERC4 Di) or an add-in RAID controller. The
embedded SCSI controller cannot be used to attached disk drives in the media cage!

     Channel.

The PERC 3/DC card can handle two internal, two external or one internal – one external connection simultaneously.
The PERC 3/QC card can handle two internal and two external, one internal and three external or four external
connections simultaneously.

Power Supplies: The NCR S2600 offers you two power supply options: (1) Non-Redundant Power Supply or (2) Redundant Power Supply. The
non-redundant power supply is a single front-loading 730W power supply. This unit provides power to all of the circuitry provided in the platform.
Power is “soft-switched”, allowing power cycling via a switch on the front of the system enclosure, or via software controller.

The Redundant Power Supply offers a hot-plug redundant power supply to insure that a system will not fail in the event that one of the power supplies
fails. In addition, the dual power - supply also enables customers to route power from two different sources to a single server.

Can you upgrade an NCR S2600 with non-redundant power supplies to redundant power supplies? Yes, all you need to do is purchase and plug in
the second power supply (customer kit). The NCR S2600 comes with a power supply distribution board that detects the second supply being
installed or removed in order to control the power applied to the system.

Memory: The NCR S2600 system board has six 72-bit (168-pin) sockets for DDR memory modules. DDR (Double Data Rate) is the next
generation of SDRAM standard using a double data rate clocking technique running at a 200MHz data rate for a maximum bandwidth of 3.2GB/s.
The NCR S2600 supports a minimum of 256MB DDR SDRAM memory and a max of 6GB DDR SDRAM. The memory system supports only 2-way
interleaved memory configurations. The DIMMs have to be identical within a pair but a pair does not have to be identical to any other pair. The NCR
S2600 requires PC2100 DDR DRAM, which is different than the PC133 SDRAM used on the NCR S1400. PC133 memory is not supported on the
NCR S2600.

Tape Drives: The NCR S2600 has a removable media cage with two bays that can be used for tape drives or disk drives, but not both. To explain,
as a tape drive cage, the tape drive is connected to a cable that is connected to the onboard SCSI controller or the optional 39160 SCSI controller.
As a drive cage, the cage includes a drive backplane that allows SCA (Hot-Plug) SCSI drives to be installed. For further information on using the
removable media cage for hard drives, please refer to the disk drive section.

The tape drive is not a required feature; however, it is recommended if no other backup process is being used. As mentioned above, the NCR S2600
has 2 x 5.25” user accessible bays. A max of one tape drive can be ordered per configuration.

VERY IMPORTANT: The NCR S2600 has an embedded LSI Logic 53C1030 Dual Integrated PCI Ultra320 LVD SCSI controller. For most
configurations, one of the Embedded SCSI controller‟s channels would be used to connect the tape drive; however, when both channels of the
embedded SCSI controller are in use and a tape drive is required, you must order an additional SCSI controller such as the 39160 SCSI controller. In
an attempt to simplify the ordering process, a feature for each tape back up unit has been created bundling a 39160 SCSI controller (F415,
F419, F427 and F432). The SCSI controller w/ Tape Drive option should be ordered when both channels of the embedded SCSI controller
are being used and the customer requires a tape drive.

Additional Notes: Media and the cleaning cartridge are included with the DLT, SDLT and the LTO Tape Drives. Additional media can be ordered by
ordering the media features listed below.

SCSI BACKPLANE CONFIGURATIONS
(7) F200 - One Channel with 6 drives (1 x 6) – 1 x 6 refers to the number of channels times the number of drives on the channel. A 1 x 6 would be
one channel with up to six drives.
(8) F201 – Two channels with 3 drives each (2 x 3). A backplane daughtercard is required for the 2 x 3 configuration. 2 x 3 indicates two channels
with up to 3 drives per channel. The daughter card electronically divides the single backplane into two separate (three drive each) backplanes.
The daughter card is automatically added at the manufacturing site. This does not have to be ordered separately.
Note: When ordering the 2 x 3 SCSI backplane configuration, you cannot add disk drives to the removable media cage. Also if additional SCSI
devices are required such as a SCSI tape drive, you must order an additional SCSI controller.
(9) F202 & F203 - The 1 x 6 configuration leaves the second onboard SCSI channel available for a third configuration. The third configuration
consists of 1 channel connected with 6 drives (1 x 6) and 1 channel connected with 2 drives (1 x 2) in the optional 2 drive media cage. The 2
drives of the 1 x 2 configuration are available through the Removable Media Cage that contains a 2-drive backplane. If you plan to place disk
drives in the media bay, you must order either F202 or F203, depending on your chassis orientation, to obtain the disk drive backplane. The
disk drives will not operate in the media bay cage without a disk drive backplane. A Manufacturing but not Technical Limitation: Disk drives
placed in the media cage must be added via the embedded RAID controller (PERC4 Di) or an add-in RAID controller. The embedded
SCSI controller cannot be used to attached disk drives in the media cage!

Note: Benefit of drives in removable media cage? Capacity and splitting OS and data for better performance.

ATTENTION: The SCSI backplane is SAF-TE compliant. SAF-TE (SCSI Accessed Fault-Tolerance Enclosure) specifications require a specialized
chipset that provides detailed drive and enclosure status via the SCSI bus. SAF-TE aspects include alert and status signaling on the presence and
state of drives, allow for hot-pluggable insertion and removal of drives, and provide LED identification for drive activity and fault conditions.

SCSI CONTROLLERS (NON-RAID) - The NCR S2600 implements dual internal SCSI channels on the system board, providing two
Ultra320/LVD (U320) channels. The primary SCSI channel will be used on the LSI Logic U320 SCSI chip. This will support U320 speed SCSI
transactions across an 80-pin interface to the SCSI Backplane. Additionally, the U320/LVD interface is fully backward compatible with the previous
generation of single-ended Ultra/Wide peripherals.

EMBEDDED SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID TO 1 X 6 BACKPLANE (F130):
When F130 is ordered all six hard drives are connected to Channel A of the EMBEDDED U320 controller. A minimum of 1 hard drive is required and
drives are attached in ascending order. Drive sizes and speeds do NOT have to match. Furthermore, the slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in
the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller. Optional SCSI devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to Channel B of the
embedded SCSI controller, and if the external SCSI cable is ordered it will be cabled to channel B of the embedded SCSI controller.

EMBEDDED SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID TO 2 X 3 BACKPLANE (F131):
When F131 is ordered the top backplane segment, housing a minimum of 2 drives and a max of 3, is connected to Channel A of the embedded SCSI
controller. The bottom segment, housing another 2-3 disk drives, is connected to Channel B. The boot drive will be in the top HDD bay and be
connected to Channel A of the SCSI controller. Drive capacities and speeds do not have to match. The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the
top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller. If additional internal or external SCSI storage devices are required, a 39160
SCSI controller must be added.

F130 or F131 must be ordered when the customer requires a non-RAID solution for the internal drives. F130 and F131 call for the internal
SCSI backplane (6 drive bays) and/or optional SCSI Tape Back Up to be attached to the embedded dual channel SCSI controller. If a RAID
solution is required, do not order F130 or F131 but review the RAID section within this document. Note: You cannot mix SCSI and RAID
configurations within the internal SCSI backplane.

ADDITIONAL SCSI CONTROLLER/Non-RAID:
The 39160 SCSI Controller (F129) can be used to connect the NCR S2600 to an LVD external device such as the PowerVault JBOD discussed later
in the document. The 39160 SCSI controller is also needed to connect internal or external SCSI storage devices when both channels of the onboard
SCSI controller are in use.

Note: The S2600 has 7 total PCI slots (2 PCI-X 64-bit slots 133MHz, 4 PCI-X 64-bit slots 100MHz, 1PCI 32-bit slot 33MHz). The combination of
RAID cards, NIC cards, SCSI cards and modems cannot exceed 7.

RAID CONTROLLERS:
 The NCR S2600 offers a high performance Ultra320 RAID on-board solution entitled PERC 4/Di that uses the LSI Logic 53C1030 Dual
Integrated PCI Ultra320 LVD SCSI controller. PERC 4/DI includes Battery Back-up, which improves the system performance and availability.
The battery backup enables customers to use write-back and read-ahead caching for overall improved write and read performance. The battery
Backup also provides additional availability of power for up to 24 hours to preserve cache contents in the event of a power outage and when the
controller is running in write-back mode. Once enabled, the embedded hardware uses/converts the onboard U320 SCSI controllers to provide
RAID levels 0, 1, 5 and 10. PERC 4/Di does not support external SCSI storage arrays. The PERC 4/Di does not support SCSI clustering.
 PERC3/DC is a 64-bit/66MHz PCI card that contains its own RAID processor, 128MB of cache memory with battery backup (transportable), and
two Ultra3/LVD SCSI channels. The portability of the cache is a key difference between this solution and the PERC 4/Di because it allows a
user to transfer the cache contents on failed card to a new working card. The PERC 4/Di cache cannot be transported to a new system board,
so the primary value of the battery backup on the PERC 4/Di is to preserve the cache contents during a power outage.
 PERC3/QC is the same as the PERC3/DC PCI card but with more channels. QC stands for Quad Channel.

RESTRICTIONS:
 F272 (2 INTERNAL CHANNELS & 2 EXTERNAL CHANNELS) CANNOT BE ORDERED WITH THE 1X6 BACKPLANE. YOU MUST ORDER
THE 2 X 3 BACKPLANE OR THE 1X2 OPTION, WHICH IS PLACING DISK DRIVES NOT ONLY IN THE DISK DRIVE BAY BUT ALSO IN
    THE REMOVABLE MEDIA BAY.
 F274 (2 INTERNAL CHANNELS & 0 EXTERNAL CHANNELS) CANNOT BE ORDERED WITH THE 1 X6 BACKPLANE. YOU MUST ORDER
THE 2 X 3 BACKPLANE OR THE 1X2 OPTION, WHICH IS PLACING DISK DRIVES NOT ONLY IN THE DISK DRIVE BAY BUT ALSO IN
    THE REMOVABLE MEDIA BAY.
The PERC 3/DC and PERC 3/QC require a destination for all of the internal connectors. When ordering the 1x6 configurations only one
connector on the RAID controller is used; thus, you must choose F271 or F275 (1 internal connector). When ordering the 1x2 or the 2x3
configurations, you must choose between F272 and F274.

The PERC 3/DC card can handle two internal, two external or one internal – one external connection simultaneously. The PERC 3/QC card can handle tw
internal and two external, one internal and three external or four external connections simultaneously. Note: Maximum one RAID controller per
configuration.
See note 18 for more information on the supported RAID controllers.

RAID FACTORY CONFIGURATIONS: A single RAID Level configuration must be selected when ordering a SCSI RAID Controller:

(RAID 0) – Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance - minimum 1 drive in disk drive bay
(RAID 1) – Mirroring - max of two disk drives
(RAID 5) – Striping with Distributed Parity – minimum of 3 disk drives
(RAID 10) – Striping of mirrored arrays – minimum of 4 disk drives

RAID Level Configuration Details :
 Motherboard RAID 0,1,5 w/ No hard drives in the media bay (F100, F101, F102) – The Slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top
peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, Optional SCSI devices (SCSI tapes not disk drives) in the peripheral bays are
cabled to channel B of the embedded SCSI controller, all hard drives are connected to channel A of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB
(RAID On Motherboard) enabled. All drives must have same capacity and speed.
 Add in RAID 0,1,5 w/ No hard drives in the media bay (F103, F104, F105) – The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top peripheral
bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, optional SCSI devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to channel A of the embedded
SCSI controller, and the drives in the HDD drive bay are connected to one RAID controller. All drives must have the same capacity and speed
    drives in HDD bay.
 Motherboard RAID 0, 1, 5 (1x6 backplane) and Drives in the media bay (F106, F107, F108) – The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in
the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy conroller, 2 x 1 HDD cage in media bay is cabled to Channel A of the embedded
SCSI controller with ROMB enabled, the internal drives (HDD Bay) are connected to Channel B of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB
enabled. Drives in peripheral bay must be the same capacity and speed and all drives in the HDD Bay must have the same capacity and speed.
However, drives in the peripheral bay may differ in size/speed from drives in the HDD bay. No Internal tape is supported in these configurations.
 Add In RAID 0, 1, 5 (1x6 backplane) and Drives in the media bay (F109, F110, F111) – The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in the top
peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, and the 2 x 1” HDD cage in media bay is cabled to Channel A of the add-in
RAID controller. Drives in the peripheral bay must be the same capacity. The internal drives (HDD Bay) are connected to Channel B of the add-
in RAID controller. All drives must have the same capacity in the HDD Bay. However, hard drives in the peripheral bay do not have to be the
same capacity/speed as the drives in the HDD bay. No internal tape is supported in these configurations.
 Motherboard RAID 0, 1, 5 (2x3 backplane) with no disk drives in the media bay (F112, F113, F114) – The slim floppy and CD-ROM are
placed in the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller, a 39160 card is added if internal or external SCSI storage
devices are needed because in these configurations the Motherboard RAID uses both onboard SCSI controllers. The top backplane segment
will be connected to channel A of the embedded U320 SCSI controller. The bottom segment will be connected to Channel B. ROMB will be
activated on both channels. A minimum of 2 drives are required and must be distributed evenly across both segments of the backplane starting
with drive 0 on each segment and moving down. You must have same capacity and speed drives in each segment of the backplane in the HDD
bay. Drives on different channels of the backplane can differ in capacity and speed from each other.
 Add In RAID 0, 1, 5 (2x3 backplane) with no disk drives in the media bay (F115, F116, F117) – The slim floppy and CD-ROM are placed in
the top peripheral bay attached to the combination IDE/floppy controller and the optional SCSI devices (tape device only) in the peripheral bays
are cabled to channel A of the embedded SCSI controller. The top backplane segment will be connected to channel A of the add -in RAID
controller. The bottom segment will be connected to Channel B of the add-in RAID controller. Must have same capacity and speed drives n
each segment of the backplane in th HDD bay. Drives on different channels of the backplane can differ in capacity and speed from each other.
 Motherboard RAID 10 (1x6) with no disk drives in the media bay (F118) – Optional SCSI devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to
Channel B of the embedded SCSI controller. All hard drives are connected to Channel A of the embedded U320 controller with ROMB enabled.
Must have same capacity and speed drives.
 Add in RAID 10 (1x6) with no disk drives in the media bay (F119) – Optional SCSI devices in the peripheral bays are cabled to Channel A
and the drives in the Hard Drive bay are connected to one RAID controller. Must have same capacity and speed drives in HDD bay.

SCSI Disk Drives: The minimum of one SCSI SCA (hot-pluggable) disk drive and the maximum of 6 disk drives can be installed in the NCR
S2600. The total capacity available in the S2600 is 438GB (73GB x 6).

Drives of varying capacities cannot be used in a RAID subsystem. When configuring redundant Logical drives, the user should keep drives of the
same capacity assigned to the same drive group. Whenever drives with different capacities are assigned to the same redundant drive group, all
drives in the group will be automatically down-sized to match the small drives in the group.

Drives of varying capacities can be used in a non-RAID solution.

Only the U320 disk drives are supported on the NCR S2600, and the S2600 does not support IDE disk drives.

Disk Drive Vendors: There are several disk drive vendors supported by this platform: In an attempt to reduce the possibility of a stop ship due to
supply constraints, we are releasing one feature per disk drive size not per vendor. All hard drive suppliers have restricted the size and
characteristics of the drives they supply to our OEM supplier, so all the drives, no matter the vendor, look the same. There are only 2 ways to
determine the supplier of a hard drive: (1) Look at the drive or 2) issue a query command and interpret the model number returned. Functionally all
drives of the same size category (18 Gig, 36 Gig, etc.) appear identical and will have no impact on Raid or other operations within the system.

5. Chassis Orientation (F620, F621, F622 and F623) – All orders must indicate the chassis orientation. The NCR
S2600 offers the 5U Chassis option and the Tower option. The approximate dimensions of the Tower chassis
     are 9”W x 17.5”H x 24.5”D. The 5U chassis dimensions are 8.56” H (5U) x 18.9” W x 24.75” D. A fully load
system will weigh just over 100 pounds. An average system will weight about 85-90 pounds.

Rack mount rails are used in conjunction with the 5U/Rackmount chassis orientation to install the server in a
rack cabinet. The rails are attached to the rack cabinet and the system is placed in the appropriate slots in each
rack rail. Once this is done, the customer will be able to slide the server in and out of the rack cabinet for easy
access. The rack mount rails are not required.
 F621 is the rack mount chassis without rack mount rails,
 F622 is the rack mount chassis with Third Party Std. Rails, and
 F623 is the rack mount chassis with the OEM Supplier Rails (RapidRails).

6. The NCR S2600 offers a redundant/hot-plug power supply (F616) and a non-redundant power supply
     (F615). A base system with a non-redundant power supply would include a single front-loading 730W power
supply. The hot-plug redundant power supply includes a dual front-loading 730W power supply. The hot-plug
redundant option insures that a system will not fail in the event that one of the power supplies fails. In addition,
the dual power supplies also enables customers to route power from two different sources to a single server.
This feature provides customers with even more availability because if one power source fails the server will
continue to draw power from a second source.

The power supply provides power to all of the circuitry provided in the server. The power supply is auto-sensing.
Auto-sensing power supplies have the capability of sensing the input source voltage. Auto-sensing power
supplies will adapt to either 110VAC or 220VAC, automatically.

The power is “soft-switched”. “Soft-switching” allows power to cycle via a switch on the front of the system
enclosure, or via software control (through server management functions). “Soft-switching” is an added security
feature. If “soft-switching” via software control is used, the switch on the front of the server cannot be used to
shut down the system. Only the user with the appropriate password can shut down the system.

                                                         Page 59
7. The IDE CD-ROM (F451), DVD-ROM (F452) and the floppy drive (F450) are all Ultra Slim devices. A floppy
drive is a required component; however, you have the choice of the DVD-ROM or the CD-ROM. The floppy
drive/CD-ROM combination and the floppy drive/DVD-ROM combination each fit in the single dedicated 5.25”
bay leaving two 5.25” bays available for tape or disk drive devices.

8. Base (F500-F505) – These features contain the motherboard, and a single CPU. One and only one of these features
must be on every order. Note: The base is bundled with 1 CPU only. For additional CPU‟s, please see note 9.
9. Additional Processors – As stated above, the base feature contains 1 x CPU. If a second processor is required, the
     following features must be ordered:
                  nd
     (1) F042 – 2 1.8GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU,
                  nd
     (2) F043 – 2 2.0GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU
                  nd
     (3) F044 – 2 2.2GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU
                  nd
     (4) F045 – 2 2.4GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU
                  nd
     (5) F046 – 2 2.6GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU
                  nd
     (6) F047 – 2 2.8GHz,512K,L2 Intel Xeon CPU
If a second processor is not required, you must order F002 – No Second Processor. Note: If this feature is not
ordered when a second processor is not required, the order will be rejected.
In order to supply power to the processors, standard Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM) are used, rather than integrating
the VRMs on the motherboard. Each processor must still have a VRM associated with it, however, instead of embedding
two on each motherboard, each VRM will be added separately as processors are added. This approach reduces the
board layout complexity while offering design modularity and providing cost benefit as the second VRM is only added if a
second processor is purchased. This also provides flexibility; as processor speeds increase, a newer VRM can be used
to accommodate the power increase without the need to re-spin the board. The appropriate number of VRMs will be
                                                                                                          nd
installed in the factory based on the number of processors ordered, while customers who purchase a 2 processor later
                                     nd
as a customer kit will get the 2 VRM in the kit.
10. Memory - The memory system supports only 2-way interleaved memory configurations. The modules are configured as
72 bits wide, to provide for ECC. ECC is Error Checking and Correcting. ECC support means that the system can detect
and correct any single-bit memory errors that may occur. The NCR S2600 supports a minimum of 256MB DDR SDRAM
memory and a max of 6GB DDR SDRAM. The DIMMs have to be identical within a pair but a pair does not have to be
    identical to any other pair.
11. Tape Drives – The NCR S2600 has 2 x 5.25” user accessible bays; however, a maximum of one (1) tape drive is
supported on the NCR S2600. The NCR S2600 has an embedded Dual SCSI controller and for most configurations one
of the channels can be used to attach the SCSI tape drive. When both channels of the embedded SCSI controller is in
use and the customer requires a tape device, an additional SCSI controller, such as the 39160 SCSI controller, must be
ordered. To simplify the ordering process, two Product IDs have been created for each tape drive device. (1) tape device
only, and (2) tape device and 39160 SCSI controller:
      F414 – DDS-4 Tape Drive only
      F415 – DDS-4 Tape Drive with 39160 SCSI Controller
      F419 – DLTVS80 with 39160 SCSI controller
      F422 – DLTVS80 Tape Drive only
      F426 – SDLT Tape Drive only
 F427 – SDLT Tape Drive with 39160 SCSI Controller
      F431 – LTO Tape Drive only
 F432 – LTO Tape Drive with 39160 SCSI Controller

There are several tape drives being offered on the NCR S2600. They can be grouped into two categories: (1) Digital Audio
Tape (DAT), and (2) Digital Linear Tape (DLT). The DAT tape is the DDS-4. The DLT Tape Drive offerings are the DLT
VS80, the SDLT and the LTO.
The DLT technology minimizes head-to media contact and optimizes tape tension to deliver longer drive and tape life than
DAT, and has superior error detection and correction capabilities. But that reliability comes at a substantial price premium.
The DAT-based DDS4 drives are designed to provide tape backup for servers running workgroup or departmental
applications where price/performance is the key purchase criteria. DLT drives are designed to provide backup for servers
running business-critical, enterprise applications where greater reliability is key.
DDS-4 (Seagate STD2401LW): The DDS-4 tape drive is a half-height device. The DDS4 tape drive can store up to 20GB
of data native, or 40GB compressed. The DDS4 can store data at a rate of 2.75MB/sec native or 5.5MB/sec
compressed. The DDS4 drive uses the most current SCSI technologies to speed data transfer between the server and
tape drive. The DDS-4 is the most reliable DDS drive with an MTBF rating of 483,000 hours at 12% duty cycle.

                                                       Page 60
DLT VS80 Tape Drive: The DLT VS80 is the new half-height format of the DLT1 tape drive. The VS80 was
designed to fit easily within rack-mounted server environments. It‟s ideal for users looking for the same high
performance, capacity and reliability found in DLT1 technologies in a space-conscious format. The DLT VS80 is
backwards compatible with existing DLT 4000 tape drives and reads and writes using industry standard DLTtape
    IV media.

With a maximum native transfer rate of 3MB/s the DLT VS80 delivers high performance. And the native
sustained drive rate of 10GB/hr gives you the ability to store your information quickly. The drive also provides
impressive capacity capabilities at 80GB native and 80GB compressed.

SDLT Tape Drive: The SDLT 220 drive is a single reel, half-inch magnetic tape drive with a native capacity of
110GB and a native transfer rate of 11MB/sec. It is manufactured by Quantum Corporation and by Tandberg
Data. The SDLT tape drive is a good fit for customers that are established DLT users with a need for backward
read compatibility with DLT4000, DLT7000, or DLT8000. Reliability is 250,000 MTBF (30,000 head life tape in
    motion hours).

LTO Tape Drive: The Ultrium tape drives are the single reel implementation of LTO technology, a new platform
developed by Seagate, HP and IBM. In the case of the LTO Tape Drive, there are essentially three different
products from three different vendors (Seagate, HP and IBM). The drives are not interchangeable and should
one of the drive vendors cease manufacturing Ultrium products, customers may be left without a drive migration
    path.

The LTO tape drive uses half-inch magnetic media, have a native capacity of 100GB and are specified with
transfer rates of 15 MB/sec or 16MB/sec. The LTO tape drive is a full height device. The LTO is a good fit for
customers that are open to newer technologies or are early adopters and those customers interested in
    price/performance considerations.

12. Ethernet / NICs (F232, F233, F234, F235): The NCR S2600 includes a single embedded Gigabit Ethernet NIC. For
additional NIC support, the NCR S2600 offers four additional NIC offerings:
 Single Channel (F232) – The Intel PRO / 100 S Server NIC is a Fast Ethernet network interface card (NIC) that
incorporates the 82550 controller. It has the same feature set as the Intel Pro / 100+ with the addition of IPSec
encryption capability. It is a 32-bit, PCI NIC. The IPSec capability provides for strong data origin authentication,
anti-replay protection, and confidentiality of network addresses. Offloading of IPSec encryption is only supported on
Microsoft Windows 2000. The Intel Pro / 100 S Server incorporates 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX technology,
supporting data transfer rates per port of 10 and 100Mbps. Features: (1) Preboot Execution Environment, (2) WOL,
         (3) PCI Hot Plug Support, (4) High Availability Through Fault Tolerance, (5) Load Balancing, (6) System/Network
Management Support. Note: This is not the same as the Single Channel Ethernet Adapter released on legacy
         platforms (F231).
 Dual Channel (F233) – is a Fast Ethernet network interface card that incorporates dual Intel 82558 controllers.
With two 10/100 ports, each adapter delivers up to 400Mbps for twice the bandwidth per server slot.
 Single Channel Gigabit Ethernet (Cooper) (F234) – Gigabit connectivity over widely deployed Cat-5 copper
cabling makes the most of your existing infrastructure. Key features: easy, cost effective migration to Gigabit
Ethernet over category-5 cabling, high network performance and flexibility via PCI-X bus at 64-bit/133MHz, and
alleviates server bottlenecks while increasing uptime through advanced server features.
 Single Channel Gigabit Ethernet (Fiber) (F235) – Industry leading Gigabit performance for connecting servers via
fiber-optic cabling. Key features: greater distances and noise resistance enabled through fiber-optic connection,
high network performance and flexibility via PCI-X bus at 64-bit/133MHz, and alleviates server bottlenecks with
increasing uptime through advanced server features.
13. Modem (ActionTec 56 Kbps internal): Up to two single port PCI modems are supported. This PCI modem is a US
modem only for use with software applications, not as a Service Modem. It is only certified with NT. It has no provisions
for a software or hardware (switch) reset. External modems are strongly recommended for server usage for this reason.
14. Remote Manageabilty: The optional Embedded Remote Access (ERA/O) SAF-TE processor card, is a hardware
solution that provides remote management support. Remote manageability does not take the place of an external
modem. Remote manageability is part of the Server Management tool and offers the advantage of not consuming a PCI
    expansion slot.
15. SCSI Backplane Configurations: The SCSI backplane in the NCR S2600 refers to that part of the drive cage assembly
that provides the physical connectors for the hot-pluggable drives. A backplane is a circuit board that has connectors for
other boards or devices and is considered as a non-intelligent component. The exception to this is the SAF-TE compliant

                                                       Page 61
backplane, which contains certain BIOS and firmware components to administer the SAF-TE functionality. The NCR
S2600 incorporates the SAF-TE SCSI Backplane in its main disk drive cage assembly.
The NCR S2600 supports three types of hot-plug capable SCSI Backplane configurations:
 The 6-drive backplane supports two SCSI configurations:
 F200 - One Channel with 6 drives (1x6) – 1 x 6 refers to the number of channels times the number of drives on that
channel. A 1 x 6 would be one channel with up to six drives. The second channel can be used for other SCSI
        devices.
     F201 - Two channels with 3 drives each (2x3). A backplane daughtercard is required for the 2 x 3 configuration. 2 x
3 indicates two channels with up to 3 drives per channel. The daughter card electronically divides the single back
plane into two separate (three drives each) backplanes. The daughter card does not need to be ordered separately.
This is automatically added when you order a 2 x 3 backplane. Note: This configuration uses both onboard
controllers, so if additional SCSI devices are needed, you must order an additional SCSI controller such as the RAID
controller or the 39160 SCSI controller.

 The 2-drive media bay cage backplane supports one SCSI configuration:
 F202 and F203 - The 1 x 6 configuration leaves the second onboard SCSI channel available for a third
configuration. The third configuration consists of 1 channel connected with 6 drives (1 x 6) and 1 channel
connected with 2 drives (1x2) in the optional 2 drive media cage. The 2 drives of the 1x2 configuration are
available through the Removable Media Cage that contains a 2-drive Backplane. The disk drives will not operate
in the media bay cage without a disk drive backplane. Note: The (1x6 + 1x2) configuration can only be used
in a RAID configuration. In short, when using the removable media cage for disk drives, they must be
attached via the onboard RAID controller (PERC4 Di) or an add-in RAID controller.

16. The NCR S2600 generally supports two non-RAID SCSI controllers: (1) The onboard SCSI controller is the
LSI Logic 53C1030 dual integrated PCI Ultra320 LVD SCSI controller, providing two Ultra320 (U320) channels,
and (2) The Adaptec SCSI 39160 adapter, which combines a 64-bit PCI interface with two Ultra160 SCSI
channels. This card moves data at the fastest speeds possible. The Adaptec SCSI Card 39160 supports up to
30 devices, making it ideal for connecting external drive arrays for mirroring, and striping multiple SCSI hard
disk drives to deliver the ultimate performance in the most demanding environments. The 39160 SCSI Controller
does not support High Voltage Differential internal or external devices.

 Non-RAID Embedded SCSI controller can be attached to the 1 x 6 SCSI Backplane or the 2 x 3 split SCSI
        Backplane:
 F130 (1 x 6) – All six disk drives are connected to Channel A of the Embedded U320 Controller.
Channel B of the Embedded U320 controller is available for optional SCSI devices in the media cage
bay. A RAID controller can be installed for SCSI external storage only.
         F131 (2 x 3) – The top backplane segment, housing a minimum of 2 drives and a max of 3 drives is
connected to Channel A of the embedded SCSI controller. The bottom segment, housing another 2-3
disk drives, is connected to Channel B. A RAID controller can be installed for SCSI external storage
            only.

                                                     Page 62
17. Adaptec SCSI 39160 adapter (F129): Maximum dual-channel Ultra160 SCSI performance and scalability with
connectivity to internal and external hard disk drives. Combining a 64-bit PCI interface with two Ultra160 SCSI
channels, this card moves data at the fastest speeds possible.

18. The NCR S2600 supports three SCSI RAID controllers: (1) PERC 4/Di, which is the embedded RAID controller, (2)
PERC 3/DC and (3) PERC 3/QC. The PERC 3/DC and PERC 3/QC are PCI cards. The PERC 4/Di does not occupy a
PCI slot. The PERC 3 cards are fully hot plug compliant. The PERC 3/DC card can handle two internal, two external or
one internal – one external connection simultaneously. The PERC 3/QC card can handle two internal and two external,
one internal and three external or four external connections simultaneously. Note: Maximum one RAID controller per
    configuration.

19. A single RAID Level configuration must be selected when ordering a SCSI RAID controller (PERC 4/Di, PERC
3/DC or PERC 3/QC). Only one RAID controller per configuration is supported. Only these RAID configurations
are available through manufacturing for the NCR S2600. Other RAID configurations may be technically
possible; however, they are not currently supported on the NCR S2600 nor are they available through
    manufacturing at this time.
 RAID 0 is achieved through a method known as striping and is optimized for performance at the expense of fault
tolerance. RAID 0 implements a striped disk array, where the data is broken down into blocks and each block is
written to a separate disk drive. Advantages: (1) I/O Performance is greatly improved by spreading the I/O load
across many channels and drives, (2) No parity calculation overhead is involved, (3) Very simple design, (4) Easy to
implement. Disadvantages: (1) Not a “True” RAID because the failure of just one drive will result in all data in an
array being lost, (2) Should not be used for critical data.
 RAID 1 is achieved through what is called disk mirroring, and is done to ensure data reliability or high degree of fault
tolerance. In a RAID Level 1 configuration, the RAID management software instructs the subsystem’s controller to
store data redundantly across a number of the drives (mirrored set) in the array. In other words, the same data is
copied and stored on different disks, or mirrored, to ensure that should a drive fail the data is available somewhere
else within the array. Advantages: (1) High performance up to twice the read transaction rate of single disks, and
the same write transaction rate as single disks, (2) 100 percent redundancy of data means no rebuilt of data is
necessary in case of disk failure, just a copy to the replacement disk, (3) Typically supports hot-swap disks, and (4)
Simplest RAID storage subsystem design. Disadvantages: (1) Highest disk overhead of all RAID types results in
inefficient use of drive capacity, (2) Limited capacity since the array can only include two disk drives.
 RAID 5 maintains data redundancy with a technique called parity checking. With this technique, the RAID controller
writes information called parity bits on the disks. Parity data is distributed across disks in the RAID 5 array such that
any single disk failure within the array allows data to be recreated from the remaining disks. Parity is used to

                                                         Page 63
maintain data integrity and to rebuilt lost data in case of drive failures. Parity bit data can be written on a single
drive. RAID Level 5 reduces parity write bottlenecks by allowing all of the drives in the array to assume part of the
parity responsibilities. This alleviates the single drive bottleneck, improving overall subsystem throughput.
Advantages: (1) Most efficient use of drive capacity of all the redundant RAID configurations, (2) High read
transaction rate, (3) Medium to high write transaction rate. Disadvantages: (1) Disk failure has a medium impact on
throughput, (2) Most complex controller design, (3) Retrieval of parity information after a drive failure takes longer
         than with mirroring.
 RAID 10 (striping of two mirrored pairs) is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0. It stripes data across all disks in
the array. Although this delivers the highest performance, the drive storage overhead is 100 percent because the
entire array is mirrored. This is an excellent solution for sites that require the highest level of performance and
redundancy, as well as the fastest recovery of data after a drive failure. Advantages: (1) RAID 10 has the same
redundancy as RAID level 1, (2) High I/O rates are achieved by striping RAID 1 segments. DisAdvantages: Most
expensive RAID solution, (2) requires 2n where n> 1 disks and (3) Very limited scalability at a very high inherent
         cost.

20. The embedded SCSI controller on the S2600 is Ultra320. Ultra320 SCSI is the seventh generation of SCSI
I/O technology. Its dominant feature is its increased speed of 320 MB per second. Other features include:
paced data transfer, a free running clock, a training pattern at the beginning of a transfer series, skew
compensation, driver pre-compensation and/or optional receiver Adjustable Active Filter (AAF).

SCSI devices are always backward compatible. When newer SCSI devices are attached to a system with
devices from a previous generation, the newer devices will back down to the maximum operating speed of the
older generation when are talking. When not talking to older devices, the newer devices operate at their normal
    speeds.

Is the Ultra 320 SCSI better than Ultra160 SCSI? Yes. Ultra320 SCSI adds greater speed, reduced overhead,
training patterns, and compensation for system losses and system mapping with diagnostic capabilities for
expanders. Ultra320 SCSI is better protected since the command, message, and status information is protected
    by CRC.

21. Power Cords: The 125V US Power Cord is bundled with the server when the unit is shipped from the United
States (US, Latin America and Canada orders). No additional feature needs to be ordered to obtain the US
Power Cord. If a country specific power cord is required, you must order the appropriate feature. EMEA and
APAC orders are different. A power cord is not automatically bundled with EMEA and APAC orders. Power
cords must be ordered separately. Orders with no power cord listed will be rejected.

22. Preload Features: Preload features are ordered when you want the software loaded on the system at the
factory. The only operating systems that can be preloaded on this system are Linux, Windows 2000 and NT
4.0. The license and media are included in the NT and Windows preload features.

23. OS Ready Features: These features are mainly used as a tracking mechanism. The software is not preloaded
on the Server. This OS ready feature informs us of the operating system the customer plans to install.

24. As mentioned earlier, the NCR S2600 supports a total of six (6) disk drives in the standard disk drive bays and
additional two 1.0” SCSI disk drives in the external 5.25” bays. The disk drives for the standard disk drive bays
and the disk drives for the removable media bay are physically the same drives with the same disk drive
carriers; however, separate features have been assigned because the cages (media bay / disk drive) are
    different.

Future plans for the NCR S2600:
 Transition from 400MHz FSB to 533MHz FSB (The 533 motherboards will be backward
  compatible with 400MHz FSB processors) – 1Q03
 1.8GHz (Xeon DP) processor EOL - Jan/Feb, 2003
 2GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM support being added 1Q03

System administration and control

The NCR S2600 delivers a strong server management solution by providing support for Dell
OpenManage software agents, Embedded Server Management III (ESM III), as well as the
optional Embedded Remote Access (ERA/O) SAF-TE processor card, which is a hardware
solution that provides remote management support. The NCR S2600 also supports Serial
Console Redirection:

Embedded Server Management Hardware

 Fault monitoring of voltage, fan, and thermal conditions to help ensure notification in case of
  potential problems
 Tracks memory errors that have been corrected by the ECC memory
 Console alerting through Dell OpenManage IT Assistant keeps administrators informed of
  server performance or potential problems
 Asset management features allow customers to inventory server configuration, CPU,
  memory and disk
 User definable OS thresholds can be set, allowing administrators to tune systems and help
  reduce bottlenecks to performance
 A watchdog timer is also integrated on the system board that provides an automatic reboot
of the server if the operating system “hangs” for a specified amount of time. In order to
utilize the “watchdog timer” OpenManage Server Agents must be loaded and OpenManage
IT Assistant must be used to configure the timer.

OpenManage Server Management Software
Dell OpenManage is designed to help you enhance your systems investment, anticipate
problems before they occur, track your valuable IT assets and perform other tasks necessary to
deliver information at the lowest possible cost.

Optional Embedded Remote Access SAF-TE processor card
The NCR S2600 incorporates the optional Embedded Remote Access (ERA/O), which provides
remote and “out of band” management without consuming a PCI slot. ERA/O also provides
customers the ability to deploy their servers without a KVM switch and, thus, helping to reduce
the total acquisition and deployment cost. ERA/O also addresses the customers need to
management their remote server infrastructure from a centralized location, which can help
reduce the TCO of the server.

Serial Console Redirection
Console redirection allows you to maintain a system from a remote location by re-directing
keyboard input and text output through the serial port. Graphic output is not redirected. Console

                                             Page 65
redirection can be used under MS-DOS® for tasks such as setting up a common BIOS
configuration or setting up a RAID configuration. In a typical installation, the system is
connected to a port concentrator that allows you to connect several systems using a shared
modem. After you use a modem or other remote connection to log into the port concentrator,
you can select which system you want to manage with console redirection.
