Springers at QC Invitational
By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer The Yorkton Springers Men’s gymnastics team competed at the QCK Invitational Competition and Western Trials in Regina recently. Travis Schmidt, who competes at Provincial Level 4, sought to secure a place on Team Sask. to attend Westerns. He accomplished his goal by placing third all around with a first place finish on vault and a second place finish on floor, rings and parallel bars. Schmidt and his coach Nicole Roy will travel to Edmonton April 12-14 to compete at Westerns with Team Sask. members Aiden Marquardt (Level 4, QCK Gymnastics; Regina), Joel Gagnon (Level 4, QCK Gymnastics; Regina), Paul Smith (Level 4, Taiso Gymnastics; Saskatoon), Curtis Graves (Level 5, Taiso Gymnastics; Saskatoon), Trevor McArthur (Level 5, QCK Gymnastics; Regina and formerly of Yorkton), Zachary Lang (Level 5, QCK Gymnastics; Regina) and Ross Turner (QCK Gymnastics; Regina). This will be Schmidt’s second time as part of Saskatchewan’s men’s team. He made local history last year when he was the first gymnast from the Yorkton Springers Gymnastics Club to win a place on the men’s provincial team. In his tenth year as a gymnast, Schmidt says he likes the strength training the sport provides as well as the ability to fly through the air and perform flips. “It’s all fun,” he suggests. Training takes up a lot of Schmidt’s time. He’s in the gym three and a half hours on Mondays and Tuesdays and for three hours every Friday. His coach and mentor through his climb to the provincial team has been Roy. “She’s done a very good job,” he declares. Also competing from Yorkton at the QC Invitational but not trying out for Team Sask were Zacharia Kais (Level 1), Erik Skoronski (Level 1), and Brett Kuzek (Power Cat). Zacharia. Kais Placed eighth all around with a third place medal on high bar and a fifth place finish on rings. Skoronski, who travels from Roblin, Man. to train placed seventh all around with fifth place finishes on both pommel horse and vault and a sixth place finish on parallel bars. Kuzek, who is the sole Yorkton Power Cat gymnast, had a very strong competition with very high scores, and is now training to move up to the Provincial Level 1.

2007 curling club champions
By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer Yorkton Curling Club (YCC) manager Lorne Fruin explains the club champions were typically determined by taking the top four curling teams from the ladies’ Tuesday and Wednesday night blocks and the men’s Tuesday and Thursday night blocks, and having them play off. This year, Fruin notes, there were only three teams in each division playing off. The Mavis Lutz rink and the Vern Leefe rink emerged as club champs from the playoffs.
