DESCRIPTION: Short, after-dinner, business speech. FOR WHOM THE SPEECH IS SUITABLE FOR: CEO, Management, direct supervisor/boss, etc. Now that dinner is over or at about to be, a delightful dinner, by the way, I’d like to say a few words to conclude the evening. Oh, and if you’re still eating, this is not an alarm— just continue with what you’re doing. I’d join you if I weren’t up here. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, work is an activity in which one exerts strength or faculties to do or perform something such as (a) a sustained physical or mental effort to overcome obstacles and achieve an objective or result (b) the labor, task, or duty that is one's accustomed means of livelihood and (c) a specific task, duty, function, or assignment often being a part or phase of some larger activity. For most of us, work is the means to financial security and status in society. But it’s also the door to opportunities and unlimited possibilities where people can take hold of their aspirations as well as their upbringing and make something incredible out of their lives. And for those who do not have resources available to them, they have a choice to prevail over these challenges and take risks or to let their hardships defeat them. It is the chance for them to find openings and different avenues to improve their lifestyle and station in life. They can move up, change any part of their lives, or start all over again. Often times, this can be done through work and a fulfilling career. When people step through the door of the company, they are hopeful about their prospects. They desire to make their dreams come true and hopefully advance in their career. And these dreams are obtained by accomplishing goals step by step. As author Napolean Hill once said, "Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul; the blue prints of your ultimate accomplishments." It’s amazing how work has a way of bringing people from diverse ethnic groups, cultures, and backgrounds together. People with different opinions, aspirations, skills, and experiences work together for one purpose: to bring success to the company.
