WHOM SPEECH IS SUITABLE FOR: CEO, President, Department Director, etc. “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” Those words, from the pen of Henry David Thoreau, were meant to describe life itself, and all the endeavors within life, but a part of me wonders whether, through some strange, unbeknownst turn of events, Thoreau was actually writing about sales. Although sales doesn’t have that “certain mystique” about it, like literature, or painting, sales is a creative endeavor. While it is commonly considered to be in the same ball park as, say, accounting, it has, in actuality, more in common with the arts. Sales has a performing component—impressing and bonding with clients and would be clients—and it has a written component. As with art forms, this “written” component is not always literally written down, or typed up, but it is planned out creatively ahead of time—in the same way that a painter “writes a rough draft” of a work in her head before actually dipping a brush into the pigments. As the artist is faced with many creative choices in considering a blank canvas—what to paint, which colors to use—so is the salesperson. Should I focus on
