									DESCRIPTION OF SPEECH: Speech to kick-off the opening of a business conference. WHOM SPEECH IS SUITABLE FOR: Prominent member of industry in question; Officer of the Conference (if applicable); Conference guest speaker; Officer of industry organization, etc. Now, I am aware of the fact that every single human being does not love business conferences. So for any contrarians out there, I have a word of advice from W.C. Fields: “Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.” Although ole„ W.C. often waxed a little surly, he accidentally offered a piece of good advice with that, because once you start smiling, you‟re likely to continue. Once you open your mind to the possibility of having reason to smile, you in fact bring about that possibility. And I know, as well, that conferences have… Shall we say, a “reputation”? As Fred Allen said, “A conference is a gathering of important people who singly can do nothing, but together can decide that nothing can be done.” But I think as we open [Conference Name], we‟re not operating under the illusion that we‟re going to fix the world‟s problems by [Tuesday/ the end of the Week/ Sunday morning/ etc.]. For [Conference Name] is really about you—the attendees. To some extent, we‟re all playing the same game, but at the same time, we‟re each playing it in our individual ways. This is a gathering and, like any other, its purpose boils down to experiencing what people have to offer. Learning and sharing in the experiences, good and bad, we have in common.
