									DESCRIPTION OF SPEECH: A speech following an acquisition/merger (serious in tone). WHOM SPEECH IS SUITABLE FOR: CEO, President, Department Director, etc. "The rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher." Thomas Henry Huxley said that, and that’s how I feel about [Company Name] [merging with/acquiring] [Other Company Name]. Some may have felt that [Company Name] was doing “just fine” before this [merger/acquisition]. Why, [example(s) of pre-merger/acquisition success, ala: “our stock price had never been higher, Midwest sales figures were on a record pace, and the raise in interest rates would likely spur more rentals”]. And I’m not going to argue that. We were doing “just fine.” Actually, “just fine” is quite an understatement. But, in the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, "There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still." [Company Name] didn’t get to where it is today by being satisfied with “just fine.” Standing still, or being content with “just fine,” wasn’t the only issue. While we can easily allow ourselves to be content with “just fine” today, that doesn’t always translate into “just fine” tomorrow. In fact, recent years have seen more than a few veteran companies embark, to the surprise of many, on a downward spiral. Perhaps nobody should have been surprised. The world is always changing, business world included, and companies cannot afford to become complacent or to take today’s success for granted.
