If you are looking for the epicenter of ignorance, look no further than a Google search of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Any Dale Jr. column, blog, or message board these days is where mental midgets go to dwell. A gathering place for the mean-spirited, blind, and uninformed. It doesn’t matter if you are reading the perspective of a Dale Jr. hater, the Junior Nation faithful, or a trusted media member. A Dale Earnhardt, Jr. article today all but summons the clueless...in droves. From where the haters sit, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. simply can’t drive a race car. And that is absolutely ridiculous. You don’t win two Busch Championships, 18 Cup races, and a Daytona 500 if you can’t flat out drive. Period. You can’t win at Bristol, Daytona, Richmond, Texas, and Michigan if you aren’t versatile. If only four drivers in the sport won more than you during your first decade in it, you are pretty darn good. For those that say that win total is the stuff of mediocrity, I dare them to go tell that to Buddy Baker or Harry Gant. So let’s put this silly notion to rest. Ask any driver or crew chief in the Cup garage...Junior can drive a race car. But there is little question that the Junior Nation faithful demonstrates similar ignorance when it comes to their favorite driver.

So let me break them the bad news: There are no conspiracies at Hendrick Motorsports. Junior isn’t receiving inferior equipment. He has access to team information. And Rick Hendrick is pulling out all the stops. If Brian Whitesell and Rex Stump can’t help from an engineering standpoint, who on Earth can? They're about as good as it gets. There's no lack of commitment, camaraderie, or collaboration. As much as his fans don’t want to believe it, Junior is being given every opportunity to be successful at HMS. For whatever reason, it just hasn’t come together yet. Finally, to all of the writers out there who have lumped the past two-and-a-half COT seasons into a single bucket and claim Junior is simply unable to drive the new car, I ask you to take a closer look. It's my personal opinion that 2008 was Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s best season as a cup driver— yes, even better than 2006 when he won six times. This is due to the fact that, last year, he ran up front everywhere—even leading 33 laps at Watkins Glen. The often-mentioned 12th-place Chase finish is a misrepresentation, as well. Junior ran up front often in the Chase, only to have top five finishes derailed by parts failures at Lowe's and Homestead and Carl Edwards’ brain at Talladega. For those of you who don’t believe Junior was that strong in 2008, would it surprise you to learn that he led as many laps as nine-time winner Edwards? All this happened with him driving a Car of Tomorrow. So much as Junior may not like the characteristics of the new car or the way it drives, his struggles run deeper than that. So what are the answers? Is it confidence? Is it chemistry? Is it pressure? Is it cars?
