Dear Students,

Congratulations and welcome to APR’s 10th annual China Trip! This opportunity
promises to be an experience you will never forget.

This year, we are prepared to visit China from April 6—23, 2011. Thanks to our sister
school partnership with Beijing #80 High School, we now have an unique opportunity to
observe Chinese culture and language that few other schools in America can provide.
While in China, you will live with Chinese families, explore Beijing’s famous historical
sights, and sample unique foods and traditions.

In this handbook, you will find answers to most of your questions. We encourage you
and your family to look through the following pages carefully. If there are any additional
questions you or your family have, please feel free to contact Ms. Li, Ms. Howland, Ms.
Thompson or Ms. Dickhaut at the numbers provided below.

You have been selected for this unique opportunity not only for your outstanding effort in
Chinese or other academic areas, but also for your strong record as an ambassador for
APR. We are confident that you can represent not only our school but also America
when we visit our sister school Beijing #80 and various places in China.

Guide to Packing
Packing is an important skill to have. Here are some important tips on how and what to
pack:

Tip #1 Pack Light – Remember, you will be in China for 16 days. You don’t need to
bring your whole wardrobe. The lighter you pack, the easier it will be to carry your
luggage. Also, you will have more room to store gifts and souvenirs.

Tip #2 Pack Appropriate – When you pack, be sure to bring only appropriate items.
Tight or revealing clothes are unacceptable. Drugs, weapons or any dangerous items are
strictly forbidden. Chinese police deal severely with anyone found in possession of such
items.

Tip #3 Pack Ahead – Don’t wait till the last minute to pack. The earlier you begin
packing, the more time you’ll have to remember little things like socks and underwear
which aren’t so little if you think about it. . .

          Preparations Check List
   o Travel documents-Visa/ Passport
o Money Belt – It is recommended that students carry a money belt under their
clothing in which to store emergency contact information, money,
                  and photocopies of one’s passport.
o Clothing—Beijing’s springtime is very similar to Boston’s (60F). The weather is
                warm and often extremely windy.
Δ One set of APR school dress code
        Δ Comfortable shorts and shirts
Δ A pair of pants and long-sleeve shirt in case it gets chilly.
        Δ Pajamas
        Δ 7-14 days of Socks/ Underwear/ Undershirts
        Δ Comfortable walking shoes
        Δ Sun glasses/summer hat

Important: Appropriate attire will be required at all times. Mid-driffs, hip huggers,
low-cut shorts, or any other inappropriate clothing will not be permitted.

o Toiletries – Bring toiletries you think you might need, but bring them in
moderation. Most items can be found in Chinese supermarkets, so please use
     discretion.

           Δ Toothbrush
           Δ Toothpaste
           Δ Hairbrush
           Δ Deodorant
           Δ Soap (and soap case)

                                                                                          8
       Δ Shampoo
Δ Hand Lotion (for dry skin)
Δ Purell Liquid Sanitizer (travel size)
       Δ Razor (if necessary)
       Δ Tampons
Δ Inhaler or necessary medication (please inform Ms. Li, Ms Howland or
         Ms Thompson in advance)
Δ Pocket tissue (most public restrooms don’t provide toilet paper)
       Δ Sun scream

o Money – Most costs will be covered by APR or #80 High School in Beijing.
Students will be expected to pay for any snacks, gifts, or souvenirs. APR
recommends students bring no more than $350 for such expenses. While in China,
students will have some opportunities to purchase gifts and souvenirs; however,
trip’s purpose is first and foremost educational. We discourage extravagant
spending as it is both a distraction from the educational experience and extremely
  cumbersome.

o Gifts—A common courtesy is to present your host family with gifts. As English
printed material is often too expensive for most families, magazines like Time,
Newsweek, and Entertainment Weekly are welcomed gifts. Also, clothing or
souvenirs from Boston are a nice gift.

o Camera –Digital camera is ideal.

o Electricity adapter—China uses 220 voltage. Radio shock sells adapters which
convert from 110v to 220v. Most cameras and computers don’t need it (have an
  universal power built-in)

o Communication back home—
-Beijing #80 School’s dormitory will have room phone and we will have the
number when we get there; it much inexpensive when call from the US.
-Calling card-can buy from any Chinese grocery stores or other phone card stores
-International cell phone-contact your phone carrier and most of the big company
  should have an international plan
  Email

o Diversions – Bring a book, CD player, or playing cards for down time during
  flights or free time
o APR Trip binder-includes China trip handbook, writing until
o Address Book Scavenger Hunt Question

                                                                                    9

                               Daily Journal
What’s my assignment? To journal throughout your trip! Journaling is a great way to
reflect on your experiences, record what you experienced, and share your experiences
with others when you return.

How often? Write a journal entry for each day of your trip! Try to fill each an every line
of the space provided!

What should I write? Something meaningful to you. You could:
 Describe the physical geography, sites, experiences
 Tell about people you meet
 Record new words or customs you learn
 Explain your reaction to the new things you encounter
 Share hopes for the upcoming days or weeks
 Quotes that stick in your mind
          Anything else!

What’s an example?

Ms. Nardi’s Sample Entry (about Morocco, not China):

We arrived today! It was great to finally get off the plane and to be greeted by the
governor of the Tiznit region. They ushered us into a room of the airport. Pictures of the
king, Mohammed VI, and the former king, Mohammed V, were hanging on the wall. A
woman from the trip told me that the people of Morocco really loved the old king but that
they aren’t crazy about the new king. Our guests brought us small cups of Moroccan mint
tea. There is about an inch of what looks like tea but it is at least half sugar. It’s almost
too sweet but after sooooo many hours in airports I would drink just about anything.
After we left the airport they took us to a restaurant in Agadir (an hour north of Tiznit).
The first course? Big loaves of bread. The second course? Seafood salad extravaganza.
There were so many things in this seafood dish: olives, hearts of palm, rice, peas, at least
four different kinds of seafood, avocados, eggs…and on and on. I tried a little of
everything. The avocados were my favorite. I was kind of tired but very excited to see my
friend Idriz who visited during the summer and played guitar at APR. However, I mostly
wanted to get to my hotel room to sleep. We finally arrived at the hotel at midnight and
what did they give us? More tea and cookies! Ahhh! There is nothing better than a sugar
rush before bed. That’s it! Goodnight.

                             Good Luck! Happy Writing!!!
