“The Swimmer” Theme, Symbols, Time frame Theme- Alcoholism and denial are unsuccessful ways in which people escape from their problems in life. Symbols- “The Swimmer” Alcohol- escape Journey- reality check Mistress- past life Time frame- No clear time frame. The reader cannot be sure as to whether it all happens in one day or not. Time is not irrelevant because the reader knows that past events occurred to the Mr. Merrill. “The Yellow Wallpaper” Theme, Symbols, Time frame \ Theme: Locking someone away doesn’t take away their problems. It can make them worse. Symbols: The wallpaper- the deteriorating mental and physical health of the narrator Woman’s bars- mental and physical confinement Time Frame: There is a timeframe of late 1800’s/early 1900’s. The time is relevant to the tale because it shows certain ideas and protocol of the time. It doesn’t fit with others of the time because it was considered an inappropriate story for the time. It speaks for all ages.
