A new computing e-xperience...

Leadership design
The cornerstone of IBM quality is a product design that ensures that quality is built into the product right from the
start. IBM's product reliability goals are incorporated into the overall design requirements for the product.

During the prototype development phase, sophisticated modelling techniques are used to uncover potential
design problems. Custom software is used to test the functions of each subsystem and component. As the
development process progresses, IBM PSG's World Wide Brand Service and Support Management (WW
BSSM) organisation is involved in each step of the development process to ensure continued serviceability and
reliability of every new IBM system.

At key checkpoint intervals throughout the development process, from concept to shipment, the World Wide
Brand Service and Support Management team performs rigorous serviceability and reliability assessments on
each new system design. Every component in the system is unassembled, examined, and then reassembled
through a series of over 300 questions and checkpoints. These assessments enable IBM development
engineers to fine tune the design of each system before it reaches the customer.

Your mobile computer is an integral part of your life. Why choose anything but the best for your business or your
personal life? IBM ThinkPad notebooks have led the industry in design with over 590 awards since their
inception in 1992. Here are just some of the reasons that make owning a ThinkPad notebook a better
e-xperience.

Why did IBM put the "Ti" in the new ThinkPad A, T and X Series
notebooks?
IBM engineers designed the new ThinkPad A (selected models), T and X Series
with the latest in high tech materials for notebooks - Titanium Carbon Fibre
Reinforced Plastic. Titanium has been used for aerospace, orthopedics and
sporting equipment because of its high strength and low density. The Titanium
Composite material is being used to protect the most vital component of the
notebook - the glass TFT display. The thinness of the display top cover and its
large surface area make it one of the most challenging areas of the notebook's
casing to strengthen. IBM engineers also designed the bottom cover of the
ThinkPad T Series using Titanium Composite material to help create the lightest
notebook with a 14.1" display at 2.1kg.

The Titanium Composite material allows IBM to create ThinkPad notebooks with large displays (up to 15") that

  What is Linux?
Linux is a UNIX clone written from scratch by Linus Torvalds and a team of programmers over the Internet.
Linux aims towards POSIX compliance (a set of standards that show what a UNIX should be). It contains all of
the features that you would expect in not only a UNIX, but any Operating System. Some of the features included
are true multitasking, virtual memory, the world's fastest TCP/IP drivers, shared libraries, and of course
multi-user capabilities (this means 100s of people can use the one computer at the same time, either over a
network, the Internet, or on laptops/computers or terminals connected to the serial ports of those computers).
Linux runs fully in protected mode (unlike Windows) and supports fully fledged 32-bit and 64-bit multitasking.

Linux also has a completely free X Windows implementation conforming to the X/Open standard. Most existing
X Based programs will run under Linux without any modification. X Windows for the uninitiated is a GUI, similar
to Microsoft Windows but is feature packed (and is rather large, consuming around 15-20MB). Most Linux
distributions come completely pre configured to a factory configuration, and distributions such as RedHat Linux
also have graphical based configuration utilities and installers (not unlike Windows' Control Panel).

IBM is committed to supporting your choice of platform and operating systems -- a commitment we have
extended to the support of Linux, the open-source operating system. To meet increased demand for this
dynamic operating system, we provide the most comprehensive hardware, software and support solutions. Linux
users can draw on IBM's extensive experience, skills and resources to address their technical needs.

Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 (US English version) is now preloaded on selected A & T Series models4.

For the past six years, IBM has filed the greatest number of patents of any company in the world. In 1998 IBM
filed a total of 2,756 patents, 900 more than its closest competitor! Much of this exceptional technology has gone
into the development of ThinkPad notebooks' superior design, creating some of the lightest and thinnest mobile
computers in the industry, while still delivering no-compromise features. ThinkPad notebooks feature
extraordinary core technology that can help your business work faster, smarter and more effectively.

The ThinkPad e-xperience
A major source of frustration for users of mobile computers is not having access to information and help when
they need it. Information that is contained on the World Wide Web can be difficult to find and access, and hard
copy information is frequently not carried with the mobile computer user. Access ThinkPad and the ThinkPad
Assistant were created for ThinkPad notebooks by IBM to enhance and simplify the mobile computing
experience for users and to make them easier for IT professionals to manage.

With a touch of the new ThinkPad Button on the new ThinkPad A, T and X
Series notebooks, users can launch Access ThinkPad. The Access ThinkPad
portal provides easy access to a wide array of information, services and
solutions available from IBM located on both the hard disk drive of the notebook
and on the Internet.

On the left side of the Access ThinkPad portal is the ThinkPad Assistant. This
is an on-system tool with a quick search engine that provides ThinkPad users
information on topics such as optimising battery life or an animated tutorial on
how to change a Mini-PCI card or upgrade memory. Previously, this type of information was available only by
carrying the books shipped with the system. The right side of the Access ThinkPad portal provides links to
Web-based information, services and solutions.

Access ThinkPad and the ThinkPad Assistant were designed with flexibility in mind. For the large enterprise
customer, these tools can be customised to provide additional information specific to their organization. This
customisation capability also provides IBM Business Partners with opportunities to provide their customer
support services electronically.

This paper describes the design and architecture of Access ThinkPad and the ThinkPad Assistant, and
describes the ease of customisation and the tools that can be used to customize these products by IT
professionals in large enterprises or by IBM Business Partners.

Optimised for connectivity
You’ll be network-ready with the standard RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports and the
versatile user-changeable Communications Bay, which makes it easier to
service and ready for industry-standard Mini-PCI cards, including the 56K V.90
modem or combined Modem/Ethernet solution.

ThinkPad notebooks let you work wireless with the optional 802.11b wireless
LAN solution4. To simplify device connectivity and remove the need for cables,
IBM is planning to announce Bluetooth Wireless Technology communications
devices, including a Bluetooth PC Card and a Bluetooth device for the ThinkPad UltraPort connector in the 4th
quarter of 2000.

www.ibm.com/pc/europe/thinkpad 12
ThinkPad Product Information Guide

What is bluetooth?
Bluetooth began as a code name and is now the official name of a specification that has already become an
emerging technology standard. Soon Bluetooth may become synonymous with wireless connectivity and its
seemingly limitless applications in an increasingly interconnected world. Put simply, Bluetooth is a new
specification for “Personal Space” wireless technology—a global standard that allows devices to communicate
with each other using a secure radio frequency.

Bluetooth-enabled portable computers, mobile phones, PC companions, office equipment, household appliances
and more—may now be able to communicate at short ranges without the burden of cables—securely,
inexpensively, at a high rate of data transmission (many times faster than a standard ISDN connection) and
without any line-of-sight requirements.

For example, from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile computer you will be able to connect to the Internet through a
Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to send and receive e-mail. Or, when you’re using a mobile phone and need a
telephone number, you can synchronise with your phone book stored on your portable, PDA or desktop
computer. Bluetooth technology can even be used to connect office devices such as printers and scanners,
devices whose placement was once restricted by the availability and length of a cable. Home
appliances—refrigerators and consumer electronics, once impractical to connect because of the complexity of
installing household data transmission lines, can now be connected as well.

IBM’s commitment to Bluetooth technology includes future interoperability for ThinkPad notebook and WorkPad
PC companion families, where the promise of short-range wireless communication opens up a new world of
design possibilities useful to IBM to help solve customer problems and build on the already exceptional
ThinkPad experience. Bluetooth promises to make ThinkPad notebooks even easier to use, allowing users to
transfer important data between their notebook and other devices, without having to physically connect them.
And because Bluetooth technology is low cost, IBM may be able to implement it across a broad range of
portable computing platforms.

Award winning IBM Service and Support
Recently, the IBM ThinkPad brand has received an “A” rating for service and reliability from PC Magazine’s
annual readers survey5. The survey is based on responses from readers who evaluate manufacturers in four
categories: satisfaction with reliability; satisfaction with repair experience; satisfaction with technical support; and
repair frequency—the number of units that needed to be repaired in the past 12 months.

IBM prides itself on world-class service and support that’s available when and where you need it. There are a
total of 21 depot repair facilities and 10 HelpCentres located worldwide. IBM has 116,000 trained service and
support employees, who speak a total of 22 languages.

ThinkPad notebooks are backed by a one-year or three-year limited warranty6 (depending on model), with IBM’s
renowned HelpCentre support during the warranty period. Warranty service is provided by IBM and authorised
IBM Business Partners.

Optional ServicePac warranty and maintenance packages7 provide up to four years of onsite or depot service
coverage from date of ThinkPad notebook purchase (including warranty period). IBM also offers personalised
Web-based support, including the IBM Knowledge Base, a Web-based tool that helps the user to diagnose
common problems and take corrective action. The tool was developed by IBM Watson Labs and is available
worldwide via the IBM support Web site.

Leadership in technology and quality
Computer technology is often viewed as a commodity, like a barrel of oil. Many buyers make the mistake of
assuming that purchase price is the first and most important criteria to look at when evaluating computers.

But anyone who relies on technology alone to gain a competitive edge knows better. Computers are exceedingly
complex, and every step in their design, manufacturing, and support can affect how well they meet your needs.
Any one of these steps can mean the difference between a computer that operates reliably and one that fails
unexpectedly in the middle of the night…or the difference between a satisfied customer and one who takes their
business to a competitor.

That’s why businesses who need the best turn to the IBM Personal Systems Group (PSG). Quality is a
watchword across our entire product line, from the lightest ThinkPad notebooks to the most powerful Netfinity
servers. We understand that, at the end of the day, it is quality and reliability that count, whether you’re refining a
presentation in a hotel room far from the office or backing up hard disk drives for hundreds of users who are
counting on you to protect their day’s work.

For the past 75 years, IBM has built its reputation and its business on quality. Our customers know that our
products will do what they are supposed to do—often faster, better and longer than expected. IBM products have
always merged the best concepts with the best components, backed by the best service and support. We’ve
helped thousands of companies on their way to becoming market leaders. Along the way, the tiny Calculating,
Tabulating and Recording Company formed in 1924 evolved into the universal icon of IBM, the first name in
personal computing and a global leader in e-business.

Before we start the product design process, IBM PSG surveys its customers to determine what they need and
want in a new product. Unlike computer makers who simply assemble systems from generic parts, IBM has the
engineering capability to design solutions that help customers with their real-world system problems.

IBM leads the way in technology
At a baseline level, all of our customers want assurances that IBM PSG products are compatible with
industry-standard hardware and software. IBM PSG works closely with others in the PC industry to help define
and evolve those standards.

Our products adhere to the latest PC 9x Hardware Design Specifications (as published by Intel Corporation and
Microsoft Corporation). We also work with other hardware and software vendors to provide products are not only
compatible but optimised to their design and function. Every IBM system and option passes a number of tests to
earn compatibility certification from both IBM and the other vendors that are critical to your business.

 Technology in ThinkPads
For the past six years, IBM has filed the greatest number of patents of any company in the world. In 1998 IBM
filed a total of 2,756 patents, 900 more than its closest competitor! Much of this exceptional technology has gone
into the development of ThinkPad notebooks’ superior design, creating some of the lightest and thinnest mobile
computers in the industry, while still delivering no-compromise features. ThinkPad notebooks feature
 extraordinary core technology:

w An industry-leading provider of high-performance Intel CPUs
w Some of the largest and brightest LCD display technology
w First to offer DVD1 in a notebook
w Extensive operating system support. The ThinkPad development team and the IBM Centre for Microsoft
Technology, located just down the road from Microsoft, work closely to develop extended operating system
  functions.
w Advanced communications processors with high-speed modems and international support
w Leading-edge systems management with functions like Wake on LAN2.

 IBM quality second to none
The key to any quality management programme is to develop a set of measurable,
quantifiable quality goals. These goals need to be developed based on input from
customers. Then, these goals must be incorporated into the entire business
process: Product Design, Manufacturing, Sales and Service.

Customers expect that any product they purchase from IBM PSG will be reliable
and available when needed. To address these requirements, IBM PSG sets clear,
quantitative product reliability goals for each new product. Our quality goals cover
 the following measurements:

w First Pass Yield—The percentage of systems that start the manufacturing process
on the assembly line and that finish the process without a problem
w Out-of-Box Failures—The number of systems that fail an IBM audit of completed
  systems awaiting shipment to customers
w Dead-On-Arrivals—The percentage of systems that have a problem when they
  arrive at the customer location
w Warranty Repairs—The percentage of systems that experience a failure during the
  warranty period

ThinkPad quality put to the test
ThinkPad notebooks are put to the test long before they’re ready to endure the toughest test of all—the
real-world trials of the business traveller.

w Product development—ThinkPad notebooks endure laboratory and life cycle testing, demanding environmental
and mechanical tests such as drop, vibration, acoustic, electrical, thermal, humidity tests and many others.
w Procurement—IBM is ISO 9000 certified, has a centralised worldwide procurement process and rigorously tests
and certifies its supply vendors. Many of IBM’s vendors have onsite representatives located at IBM to ensure
continuously the integrity of their components.
w Production—IBM doesn’t ship a new product until a minimum of 5000 units are built—all to optimise the
manufacturing process for maximum efficiency and accuracy, helping stop defects before they reach our
  customers’ computers.

 www.ibm.com/pc/europe/thinkpad 15
 ThinkPad Product Information Guide

We understand that success in today’s highly competitive business environment requires ongoing efforts to
improve quality and customer satisfaction. The quality that we put into our ThinkPad notebooks helps to improve
your dependability and reliability. And the satisfaction you experience with our products helps you attain higher
levels of satisfaction among your customers.

 IBM product consistency
Many of our customers purchase a number of systems over a period of time. These customers need to feel
confident that their software applications will run on all their systems.

The realities of the PC industry require that we maintain multiple sources for most components. For example, we
do not use only one supplier to meet our entire requirement for hard disk drives. In addition, we must use
multiple sources to provide backup should a supplier encounter a severe manufacturing problem. As a result,
most critical components have a primary source and a secondary source.

At IBM, we change the supplier and type of component as little as possible during a system’s life. For example,
IBM PSG does not change the supplier of our hard disk drives to take advantage of fluctuating market prices. If
any of the components are changed, then that component must be qualified. Most of the component qualification
process is directed towards ensuring that the component change does not impact a customer’s software image.

Don’t take our word for it
Here’s a sampling of reviews and testimonials that attest to the effectiveness of IBM PSG’s focus on quality:

w “Rigorous testing programs by PC manufacturers are nothing new, but IBM’s seems to be working.” The industry
average for Dead on Arrival systems is 1.42%, IBM’s is 0.38%—PC World Reliability and Service Survey, May
  1999.
w IBM rated #1 in satisfaction and #1 in value—Computerworld Survey of IS managers, April 20, 1998.
w “IBM’s major strengths against the competition include ease of setup, out-of-box quality, onsite service, volume
discounts, and value-added services”—Technology Business Research Inc., May 4, 1998.
w IBM is the only PC vendor rated in the top tier of quality and reliability by both PC World and PC Magazine.

The next time you shop for computer hardware, consider how the quality of your purchases will affect your
business. Can you afford the time that is wasted when systems are dead on arrival? Can you afford the loss of
data and employee productivity caused when a system fails in mid-use? Can you afford to rely on technical
support that is outsourced to the lowest bidder? When you add everything up, can your business afford to settle
 for anything less than IBM?

Mobile operating system software support
IBM has a design for the future of mobile systems. This plan demonstrates the IBM commitment to influence and
implement the Microsoft technology curve, to deliver the best mobile hardware platforms for OS/2 and Microsoft
operating systems, to become the premier provider of service and support for mobile operating systems, and to
protect IBM customer investment in technology.

The IBM and Microsoft Collaboration Continues With Microsoft Windows 2000
As a development partner with Microsoft, IBM is playing a major role in the deployment of Microsoft's Windows
2000 operating system to the industry. Right now IBM is developing Microsoft Windows 2000-based offerings for
new IBM desktop PCs, ThinkPad notebooks, Netfinity servers, applications, and services and support. In
addition, IBM is participating in several joint marketing programs with Microsoft to support customers who are
making the transition to Microsoft Windows 2000.

From participating early on in the operating system development process,
to conducting extensive compatibility testing of IBM systems with
Microsoft Windows 2000 beta code, IBM is proceeding in step with
Microsoft to deliver world-class, industry-standard Microsoft Windows
2000 solutions.

IBM has made a major investment in the deployment of resources needed to work hand-in-hand with Microsoft
in order to ensure IBM systems are clearly the superior platforms for Windows 2000 and other Microsoft
Products. Engineers frequently download builds from Microsoft and use the builds to test Microsoft's latest
operating system software with IBM systems. As a result, IBM is able to proactively work to optimise Microsoft's
latest releases with IBM systems and resolve compatibility issues while the software is in the beta stage. Thus
customers can be confident that IBM systems will work well with Windows 2000. In addition to co-operative
testing, IBM systems are used as development platforms for Windows 2000 in Microsoft's development labs and
current Window 2000 releases are used in IBM's development labs for next generation PCs.

Windows NT compatibility testing
IBM has been certified as a Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Laboratory. This certification
allows IBM to certify its personal computers under Windows NT. The IBM ThinkPad passed
Microsoft's hardware compatibility test for Windows NT Version 4.0. The ThinkPad focuses
on easy installation, integration and support for mobile functions across the ThinkPad family.
IBM believes that ThinkPad is the premier mobile Windows NT client on the market because
of its compatibility and advanced functionality. That's the ThinkPad promise of value.

Additional mobile enhancements include suspend and resume for energy saving, and such
hardware-based power management tasks as turning off the hard disk drive and monitor
after a predetermined period. A ThinkPad running Windows NT will allow a “warm swap”
between the floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM, making it easy to switch between floppy disk
and CD-ROM.

Operating system support via the Internet
Support for the ThinkPad has expanded into operating systems, including OS/2, Windows 95/98, Windows
2000, Windows NT, and Windows 3.11. Available on the Internet at www.ibm.com/pc/support Contents of
this web page include the latest device drivers, utilities, and Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) to download.
There is also an on-line ThinkPad user's guide, tips and techniques documents, and question-and-answer
material.

ThinkPad Product Information Guide

Windows 98 and power management for the future
The ThinkPad product line has long been known for its excellent power management. In addition to making the
computers easy to use and providing them with a longer battery life, power management has enabled ThinkPad
notebooks to be smaller and lighter than many competitors’ models. Power management tools such as, standby,
suspend, resume and hibernation, have been provided by ThinkPad notebooks using Advanced Power
Management (APM).

With the introduction of Windows 98 you can now get Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). Its
major improvement over APM is that it moves the bulk of power management decisions from the computer to
the operating system and applications. The operating system and the applications know more about the
system's current and future activity and are thus better able to manage the power state of the system. For
example, in the future, applications supporting ACPI will tell the operating system when they need a lot of
processor performance and when they are just waiting for input. The operating system will use this information to
regulate the speed of the processor and thus its power consumption.

Although ACPI can run with existing software applications, many must be rewritten to make them ACPI
compliant before it will work to its full potential. When the remaining issues with ACPI are resolved, an upgrade
package will be made available on the IBM Web site. The upgrade package will contain the guide of update
procedures in addition to device driver updates, and BIOS updates as necessary to make ACPI work reliably.

 DVD regional coding
To discourage movie piracy, the entertainment industry insisted on DVD players that read regional codes on the
disc, corresponding to six geographical regions around the world. Therefore, a DVD movie disc encoded for
North America cannot be played on a DVD player bought in Europe. The six regions are:

w Region 1: US/Canada/Virgin Islands
w Region 2: Japan/Europe/Middle East/South Africa
w Region 3: Asia
w Region 4: Australia/New Zealand/Central and South America
w Region 5: Africa/India/Pakistan/Russia
w Region 6: China

 A new touch for TrackPoint
New "Press-to-Select" or "Release-to-Select" features allow tapping of the TrackPoint itself to speed icon
launches and reduce keystrokes. A new programmable centre button enables fast scrolling of Web sites and
documents, or fast panning across wide spreadsheets. Or switch to the innovative magnifying glass feature to
enlarge screen views in any application.

 Accelerated. Graphics Port (AGP)
The AGP interface is a platform bus specification that enables high-performance 3D graphics capabilities on
PCs. AGP provides a high bandwidth pipeline (bus) between the graphics controller and system memory. It is an
extension of the Dual Independent Bus (DIB) architecture, where there are two independent, high-speed paths
into the memory interface. With AGP, the memory bandwidth to other devices is significantly increased,
improving system performance and bringing greater 3D graphics capabilities to mainstream businesses.

 Energy Star compliant
IBM ThinkPad notebooks meet Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency. Energy Star-compliant ThinkPad
notebooks deliver all the performance features you expect from your computing system. They also meet EPA
criteria for power consumption in low power states, are programmed to invoke low power states within
EPA-specified default times and are shipped with power management features enabled.

IBM Universal Manageability
Your network is growing all the time. New computers, new servers, new hardware in between. How do you
manage it all and still have time to discover new technology, improve your processes, and most important, keep
management and your users happy? IBM Universal Manageability (UM) is a total computer management
solution designed to provide greater control of your IT assets—and help reduce costs and demands on your time
by automating your most routine tasks.

IBM's Universal Manageability solutions help streamline and automate PC systems management and support
tasks such as asset deployment and tracking, leveraging existing system management products in the
enterprise. These leading-edge, standards-based PC tools are available for IBM ThinkPad notebooks to help
you reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of your networked PCs and allow you to focus vital company
resources on essential business activities.

Using common industry standards such as Desktop Management Interface (DMI) or next-generation Common
Information Model (CIM), IBM computers are easier than ever to manage. Standards are only the
beginning—the IBM difference is the tools. These are the tools that make IBM ThinkPad notebooks easier to
manage and control on your IT network. You’ll see that difference—with increased productivity, less downtime,
better support, and as a result, lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

UM is comprised of two distinct parts. The first part is Technology Enablers, which are the hardware and
firmware features built into IBM’s PC-based offerings. Examples include Wake on LAN and S.M.A.R.T. hard disk
drives. The second part is Life Cycle Tools, which are a set of software applications to help you better manage
your assets. Both help you reduce your TCO throughout every stage of the computer life cycle.

Total Cost of Ownership
The Gartner Group estimates that purchase price accounts for only 20 percent or
less of a computer's total cost. Yet many computer vendors will focus on that 20
percent exclusively, ignoring the thousands of dollars you could spend for
supporting that computer in the long run.

Consider the costs associated with deployment, help desk, asset management,
BIOS updates, process automation, image maintenance, peer support and down
time. Over the life of the PC these things can become overwhelming, not just from
a cost standpoint, but from a resource standpoint as well.

We want you to be able to focus on running your business, not your computers. For this reason, IBM ThinkPad
notebooks provide a combination of hardware and software tools, and programmes that make managing your
PC easier throughout its life cycle, therefore saving you time and money. In other words, providing you with a

 Wake on LAN
An example of this is IBM Wake on LAN. This is a technology that simplifies the management of PC systems by
allowing them to be remotely powered on over the network. IBM Wake on LAN is an essential building block for
convenient network management because it lets administrators schedule and perform tedious and
time-consuming tasks after hours, when some systems may have been powered off.

 LANClient Control Manager (LCCM)
Deployment is often one of the most time-consuming tasks for an IT staff—and it’s also one of the easiest
places to identify and reduce costs. LCCM will help you automate system deployment, BIOS updates, system
function updates and virus scans as well as perform custom maintenance procedures and retirement. LCCM is a
key part of the Universal Manageability portfolio, addressing the deployment, maintenance and retirement stages
of the life cycle for your ThinkPad notebooks. See the LANClient Control Manager Information Brief for more
 information.

 Lifecycle Care programme
By providing stable hardware models and life cycle management and transition planning information and tools,
the IBM Lifecycle Care programme gives companies a more informed, and thus more stable environment in
which to make critical IT decisions, evolve existing hardware, and select future technologies. The programme
 consists of three distinct components.

 Proactive Change Notification
Once you have supplied basic system and operating environment information on your products, you will receive
proactive, e-mail notification on selected technical revisions (changes to BIOS, device drivers, hardware fixes,
etc.) and other technical hints on your specific systems. You will be better able to control and maintain your
software images an provide better training and support to your users, as well as increasing your product
awareness and understanding, enabling you to take advantage of the many hardware and software features of
your system. Proactive change notification is available to end users through IBM's PC support web site,
 www.ibm.com/pc/support.

 Product Preview
As a global technology provider, IBM offers product and technology information to selected customers on a
confidential basis. Your local IBM representative can provide regular updates on product transition plans and
industry trend and technology road maps. Key features of product previews include:

w Available for ThinkPad notebook product lines and selected Options by IBM products
w Information updated monthly, with 90-to-120 day horizons
w Global in scope with regional and country specific information

This enables you to better manage your IT product acquisitions, global deployments, and technology transitions
and keeps you better informed and prepared for the endless stream of information technology changes that can
help you better compete in the global, e-business marketplace.

 Workhorse Models
Workhorse models are long-life products that will not have planned hardware changes that will affect the IBM
software preload images for at least nine months after general availability. This gives you have a more stable
hardware and image environment in which to do global deployments; model standardisation and longevity can
help simplify and drive time and costs out of your training, support, and deployment processes; and having a
limited number of long-life products can simplify your procurement/acquisition process.

 ThinkPads in space
Is there a better way to show how ThinkPad quality, design and technology
can benefit you in real life situations? NASA selected IBM ThinkPads to
accompany their astronauts into space above all other vendors. They put
the notebooks through some rigorous tests to make sure that they can
cope with the extreme situations they would encounter in space.

The Discovery mission marked an historic day for IBM, as a record 20
ThinkPad notebooks played a key role in the nine-day research mission.
This included an inaugural trip for the model 760XD, of which four were on
board, as well as 16 model 755Cs.

Fifteen of the ThinkPad notebooks were dedicated to a variety of experiments while the others helped manage
other tasks on the Space Shuttle. To date, astronauts have used the notebooks only for non-command and
control functions, such as monitoring payloads and space data. These
ThinkPad notebooks were used on the STS-95 Space Shuttle for collecting
data in scientific experiments, co-ordinating systems operations and
                                     enabling communication.

In 1998, a Russian cargo ship collided with the space station Mir and
punctured a compartment on the space station. Several ThinkPad
notebooks were exposed to the severe cold and broiling heat of space for
several months. The only damage suffered was a burned-out backlight,
which was replaced along with the associated boards, as well as the
batteries, which were replaced as a precaution. After these repairs, the ThinkPad notebook booted up, ready to
 perform.

 ThinkPad 240 series
The ThinkPad 240X mini-notebooks were designed to be an easy-to-carry, easy-to-use,
easy-to-connect superslim notebook for professionals who value portability. Weighing
about 1.5kg and featuring the durable IBM ThinkPad UltraCarbon casing, a keyboard
that is 95% the size of current standard ThinkPad notebook keyboards, a large palm
rest and integrated TrackPoint pointing device, the ThinkPad 240X packs all the
features you need to work comfortably virtually anywhere, anytime. It also includes a

Docking and port replicator solutions
IBM introduces a sleek line of docking solutions that not only provide robust functionality, but also save valuable
desk space. The new ThinkPad Port Replicator and the new ThinkPad Dock work with the new ThinkPad A (not
including A21e models), T and X Series notebooks. These enhanced docking solutions provide a simpler and
easier-to-manage ThinkPad e-xperience.

ThinkPad Port Replicator: expertly designed cable management
The ThinkPad Port Replicator offers simple cable management for quick access
to your ThinkPad A, T or X Series notebook and other desktop resources such as
printer, external monitor, USB devices, WorkPad PC companion cradle and
more.

                                        ThinkPad Dock: robust expansion capability
The ThinkPad Dock offers the same cable management features as the
ThinkPad Port Replicator does, plus great expansion capability with the
modular Ultrabay 2000 (accommodates the same devices as the ThinkPad
A, T and X Series), a half-size PCI card slot, two PC Card slots and two
USB ports. There’s also an integrated power supply. Does not support the
                                        ThinkPad A21e.

Optimised for connectivity
Quick access to your network is simple. The ThinkPad Port Replicator and ThinkPad Dock come with integrated
RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports that allow for one-step pass-through network connectivity.

A “snap” to use
Both the ThinkPad Port Replicator and the ThinkPad Dock feature our distinctive “quick-snap” design that lets
you attach or detach your ThinkPad notebook to or from either docking solution—in one simple motion. And the
new power switch lets you turn your ThinkPad notebook on and off via the ThinkPad Port Replicator or ThinkPad
Dock.
