Australian Curriculum Update:
When Education Queensland moves to implement the Australian Curriculum, it will be done in stages over the
next few years. Mathematics, English and Science will be started in Term1, 2012. The other Learning Areas we
have (namely Study of Society and Environment; Technology; H&PE; The Arts and LOTE), will be implemented as
they are finalised by Education Queensland to be ready for their schools. Although SOSE will change to History
and Geography.
Maths, English and Science will be broken down in to the following teaching strands:
Maths: Number & Algebra; Measurement & Geometry; Statistics & Probability
English: Language; Literature; Literacy
Science: Science Understanding; Science as a Human Endeavour; Science Inquiry Skills
These strands will help students develop their knowledge in these areas and give them needed skills for when
they become adults in our society!
To find out more about the Australian Curriculum, refer to the following link or see your child's teacher or Mr
Ruthven in the Office.

'World of Maths' visit to Walloon
Last Friday students were treated to a 'hands on' Maths Session by the World of Maths. The students worked in
small groups and rotated around 12 activities set up by the company. Each activity was meant to challenge the
student's problem solving ability and engage them in discussion with their peers to solve the activities. I spoke to
students and teachers, I had many positive reports from all.

Year 5 Students will be back from Stradbroke Island Camp this Wednesday afternoon. I hope they all will have
had an enjoyable learning experience.

Please remember there is a P&C Meeting tonight, 7:00pm. The more people we have coming and involved,
the stronger our school becomes!
All Welcome!
Have a Great Week!

LIBRARY NEWS
Colouring competitions will be given out to all classes this week. The entry form for the matching competition will
be given to all students in years 3-7. Teachers will have entry forms for students in years Prep – 2 if any of these
students would like to enter. Please ask your teacher for an entry form.
All entry forms and colouring entries need to be handed in by Monday 22 nd August. Entries for the construction
competition and bookwriting competition should also be handed in by Monday 22 nd August.
There will also be a drawing competition where students can draw anything from around the world. These also
need to be handed in by Monday 22nd August.
Entries for the guessing competition can now be put into the box in the library. Closing time for this competition
will be before the Bookweek parade.
Parents are welcome to attend the Bookweek parade which will commence at 9.15 on Friday 26 th August.
Students will parade in their costumes and all competition winners will be announced. Prizes will be distributed
after the parade. Students may come dressed as someone or something from another country for the theme “One
World, Many Stories” or as a book character.
Students are now being shown the books which have been shortlisted this year in the picture book and early
childhood category. They will be voting for their favourite book during bookweek and those students who vote for
the winning books will go into the draw for a major prize at the parade.
Book club should be back at school by the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
Look out for the cryptic clue for the guessing competition in this newsletter!

TUCKSHOP NEWS
Working Bee
Don’t forget to mark Saturday 20th August in your calendar and come along and help with our Working Bee.
Some of the jobs to complete include re-levelling of the soft fall bark under the playgrounds, painting and general
maintenance. If you can, bring along a wheelbarrow, shovels and rakes, it will make the tasks so much easier to
complete. Morning tea and sausage sizzle lunch will be supplied as our way of saying “thank you” for your help.

Coles and Woolworths Vouchers
Keep on collecting the Coles and Woolworths promotional vouchers to help our school get some great sporting
and educational equipment. Drop the vouchers into the tuckshop boxes or the boxes in the office and help make a
difference.

Tuckshop
A reminder to all families to place your tuckshop orders by Thursdays. This helps us ensure we can fill all the

Cool evenings running into sunny days.
If this is winter we do not have much to complain about. The lovely sunny days more than compensate for the cool
evening we have had lately.
As our senior classes move through their camp months they seem to be emerging from their cold camp nights and less
than enough sleep happily and well.
There is a special treat coming this coming cold Saturday night for some of the Walloon students who are involved in
the Auskick program at the school. They have been invited to The Gabba to have a kick of the footy on the Gabba
ground at half time. With the Lions and the Gold Coast Suns playing, it should be an unforgettable night for those
children.
Come on Queensland!
Your friend, Chappy tim
