TransEuropeHalles 25th Anniversary 24-26 April 2008 – Les Halles – Brussels INVITATION More than 45 European cultural centres meet in Brussels in order to celebrate their 25-year long collaboration… A special meeting… Foundation in Les Halles March 1983 : Les Halles organize a forum in Brussels during a week-end in order to gather several independent cultural centres in Europe and invite them to share their experiences and to take part to a series of activities. As a result of this meeting, a common view on a kind of emerging alternative culture was raised, whose starting point and corner stone was based on the rehabilitation of disaffected industrial buildings and venues. Seven European actors took part to this first meeting and to the start of the network, newly called « TransEuropeHalles » : Les Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels, Huset in Copenhagen, Kultur Fabrik in Koblenz, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Ny Scen in Gothenburg, Pali Kao in Paris and Rote Fabrik in Zürich. TransEuropeHalles counts today more than 45 members spread in 25 European countries, offering to its members a stimulating platform of exchanges, support and cooperation. 25 year after the first informal meeting, time has come to celebrate on the same location where the network was founded. Les Halles today… Officially labelled European cultural centre for the French-speaking community in Belgium, Les Halles develop their programme following the axes of inter-disciplinarity, contemporaneous artistic proposals, as well as the welcoming of artists emerging by the character of their practice, be it in Belgium or in Europe. The programme concentrates on specific fields like dance, new circus, renewed writing formats for the stage, live art, and every kind of format crossing traditional disciplines. Les Halles are also engaged into literary and political cycles, while at the same time investing a lot within the framework of mediation towards the various specific audiences, and its direct neighbourhood. Last but not least, Les Halles hold a specific place and stay one of the most remarkable spaces available for culture in Brussels through the spectacular architecture of the Grande Halle, offering huge artistic perspectives as well as inspiration for the craziest projects.
