                           English Internships
The VCU Department of English encourages students to earn academic credit while gaining
experience applying communication skills—such as research, writing, and editing—in non-
academic settings. English majors who have successfully completed one or more of the
following courses are eligible to apply: ENGL 302 Legal Writing; ENGL 303 Writing in the
Workplace; ENGL 304 Advanced Writing; or ENGL/MGMT 327 Business and Technical Report
Writing. Students from any department who are completing the Minor in Writing are also
encouraged to consider an internship.

ACTIVITIES
Work involving any of the following, or similar, activities would be appropriate for an English
Internship:
Newsletters, manuals, arts administration, in-house or trade publications, literary/arts
publications, news releases, business writing and editing, advertising, public relations
writing, legal writing and editing, technical writing and editing, library or online
research, report preparation, or general editing. Many interns have sophisticated
         computer skills including web design.
Ideally, the intern will do research, writing, and/or editing for at least one project that will be
published in some fashion, in order to demonstrate his or her professional communication skills.

STRUCTURE
For a three-credit internship:
        -10 hours weekly
-14 weeks in coordination with Fall or Spring academic semester,
or the equivalent, e.g., a summer job involving fewer weeks but more hours weekly.
One- or two-credit internships involving fewer hours are also possible.

EMPLOYING AN INTERN
Internships enable the professional community and the university to develop closer ties and
to share in the training of young professionals. Internships may be paid or unpaid, and should
have a designated supervisor who will sign the internship contract and complete the final
evaluation. This person should be prepared to orient the intern to the job and its expectations, to
provide work materials and a place to work, and to schedule hours and assign the intern's
responsibilities. While internships often involve some tasks such as filing and photocopying, the
responsibilities should include enough meaningful work to have solid educational value. The
intern's final grade for the internship will be assigned by the faculty coordinator based on the
supervisor's written evaluation.

An organization interested in having an intern may fill out the accompanying form
and return it to: Dr. David Coogan, Director of Undergraduate Studies
