Invention Convention 2011 Welcome to Invention Convention 2011! Who: All 5th grade students and interested 4th grade students What: An assignment worth 100 points toward your science grade. You will identify a problem and work hands-on with your family to invent a solution. When: Wednesday, March 30th through Friday, April 1st Inventions will be on display March 30th for MCMA lower grade students. March 31st and April 1st inventions will be available for viewing during conferences. Where: Mount Clemens Montessori Academy gym Why: This is a great opportunity to be creative and share new ideas while creating special moments with your family that will last a lifetime! Happy inventing and have fun!! Sincerely, Mrs. Bowling Invention Convention Process Use the following list as a guide in planning your invention: Identify a problem or need you wish to remedy. State the problem Determine why this is a problem List possible solutions to the problem. Consider the usefulness and possible uses of each idea Select the solution you feel is the best idea. Design the invention. The plan – drawings with written descriptions (blueprints) A list of materials you will need to build your invention Construct the invention. Build your invention. Make a self standing presentation board to tell about it. Share your invention and presentation board. This is due Tuesday, March 29th at 8:00 a.m. Attached is a list of Invention Convention Resources including websites, databases, and video clips (access the video clips from the online resources/databases by searching by title or subject.) Go to http://libraries.risd.org/LessonPages/inventionconvention.htm to utilize these resources. Invention Convention Deadlines and Grading Deadlines On or before February 28th: invention idea and student/parent signatures On or before March 7th: invention plan (blueprint) – a detailed, labeled drawing of your invention and a list of the materials you think you will need to build your invention March 14th: rough draft telling about the problem or need and why you feel this is a problem or need and details about your solution to this problem or need telling why you think this is a good solution. These can be on one paper (clearly labeled) or on two separate papers. March 21st: rough draft of your detailed description of your finished product. Include how it works, how it makes life better, and who it helps. March 29th: your completed display board and invention due by 8:00 a.m. March 30th: presentation to MCMA lower grade students March 31st – April 1st: viewing for family and friends during conferences Grading The invention is worth 50 points o Final invention is constructed neatly and according to blueprints – 40 points o The invention does the job intended – 10 points The display board (3 section) is worth 50 points o Content: - 30 points Problem: described in detail (see above) Solution: described in detail (see above) List of materials and Blueprints (see above) Finished product: described in detail (see above) Name of invention and your name (clearly visible on display board) Completed work by deadlines (see above) You may include other items of your choice to make your board attractive! o Neatness – 10 points o Grammar and Spelling – 10 points This is an “At Home” project; class time will be used for conferences only.
