Before I Die. Jenny Downham
Audrey Schroer & Nishani Ramkissoon

Goals/Objectives
 improve reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and vocabulary
 make pupils more knowledgeable about cancer/life’s lessons
 allowing pupils to think out of the box

Introduction:
Suitable for the third class upwards.
Because of the “heaviness” of the book pupils read the biggest part of it at
home. There is an audio-book, so some „safe‟ parts can also be read in class.

It‟s an emotionally charged book that cannot leave any reader unmoved or
unshaken.

Before starting such a topic, however, you would need to have a little
background knowledge pertinent to your pupils e.g. recent death in the family
to cancer or other terminal illnesses, any pupil facing their own battle with
cancer or recent losses etc. This you would do with the pupil and their mentor
should there be such a pupil. Explain that this is a book that you would be
using in class and would they have objections to such a book being used – a
book dealing with a terminal illness and dying young.

Because we must remember at this very moment someone in some part of the
world is getting this devastating news .

Pre-reading

-Show the pupils the book and tell them the title.
-Ask them what comes to mind when hearing the title/seeing the cover.
-Word of precaution: tell pupils this is a heavy book. If anyone has problems
before, during or after reading, please tell teacher (if so, every teacher has to
deal with the situation that he or she thinks is the proper way).

-Show book trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJWj3bMbEDM
-Discuss the trailer:
Ask pupils what it was about.
What is meant by: „list of things she wants to do‟ = she is going to die.
What do you think is the cause of death = leukemia. Discuss/Explain
shortly leukemia (will be discussed in another lesson of while-reading).

-Show video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gw809okiUk
(teen with cancer checks off bucket list)
-Discuss the video.
-Hand out the reading-file.
-Pupils: Fill in the bucket list.

While-reading

-Pupils have to read a few chapters before every lesson and write the highlights
of the chapters they read.
The audio-book can be used for the „safe‟ parts (so the parts that are not too
emotional) in class.

-For further while-reading exercises, see exercises 1-6.

-In one of the lessons discuss the topic „leukemia‟:
-Show video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbQ_2olmiFo (let them live,
teenage cancer film)
-Hand out material on leukemia. Read and discuss.

Post-reading

Exercise 1
Will: Tess has made a will. Ask pupils if they know what a will is and let them
do exercise 1.
Discuss it afterwards. How they feel about it etc.
Exercise 2
UK English language: In the book there are a lot of typical English words.
Pupils do exercise 2.
Discuss it and ask them about typical Dutch teenage language.

Exercise 3
Quotations-grid: who said what.
Pupils are asked to fill in the grid; names and their own opinions or whatever
they think the meaning is. Discuss in groups/class.

                                  Exercise 4
Pupils are asked to write down in 60 words what this novel has taught them..

Grading
At the end the pupils have to hand in the file. They will not get a mark, but a
pass or a fail, based on their input in the file.

Conclusion
This book really deals with the facts of life and breaks down all barriers. Death
is an inevitable part of life. When you have completed reading the last page
and close the book it makes you want to re-think your own life. And leave with
the motto “cease the moment” for death may be lurking around the next
corner…..
