Cohoes Schools earn STAR status for
energy savings
Did you know: the Cohoes City School District is one of
only a handful of school districts in the Capital Region
to have its schools labeled EnergySTAR buildings by
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). In fact, five of the six buildings
owned by the district – CHS, CMS, Harmony
Hill, Page Avenue and Van Schaick – have all
earned the EnergySTAR label -- a national
symbol for protecting the environment
through superior energy efficiency. Several
of the buildings have attained EnergySTAR
status for three years or more.

Energy Star labeled buildings meet strict
energy performance standards set by the EPA and use
less energy. They are less expensive to operate and
cause fewer greenhouse gas emissions than comparable
facilities nationwide. To qualify for the Energy Star, a
building must score in the top 25 percent based on
EPA’s National Energy Performance Rating System.

                    Learning by all

Fertile ground for future
scientists
From the classroom, library and labs, to
exploring the vast natural resources we enjoy
in and around Cohoes, our schools and our
teachers are using hands-on, project-based
learning to introduce a lifelong appreciation of
science and nature to students of all ages.
Not only do our students routinely explore
places like the Cohoes Falls and Peebles
Island and investigate life along the Hudson
and Mohawk Rivers, these days students are
becoming vested stewards of the environment.
Case in point: on May 18, the Abram Lansing
Green Team celebrated a milestone -- they
recycled two tons of paper in just a matter of
months. Their recycling is part of a Green Team
effort that is ongoing at every school. Green
Team members collect paper and weigh it
before it is picked up by the recycler. “It takes
17 trees to make one ton of paper” said Jeffery
Huneau, Green Team leader at Lansing,“our kids
are proud to have already saved 34 trees.”

Just this year, students at Harmony Hill collected
26,965 bottles and cans and donated the returnables
to the Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society. In
doing so, the “third grade bottle brigade” helped
generate more than $2,000 for the animal shelter.
In April, hundreds of CMS and CHS students took to
the streets of Cohoes as part of Global Youth Service
Day to lend some “sweat equity” to spring revitalization
efforts at area parks and around local businesses.

Energy savings help support our most
precious resources (continued from p.6)
For schools like those here in Cohoes that achieve Energy Star status,
there is significant cost savings. Top performing Energy Star labeled
schools cost, on average, 40 cents per square foot less to operate than
the average performers, use an average of 35 percent less energy
than typical buildings and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere. And that’s exactly what’s happening here
in Cohoes, where administrators, teachers, staff and students
are all engaged and doing their part to help the reduce energy
consumption and reuse resources we have often taken for
granted. And the efforts are paying off, with millions in savings
realized since September, 2005.Take a closer look:
For the month of May, 2011:
District energy costs without efficiencies: $57,484.97
Actual costs: $37,978.46
Energy Savings: $19,506.51 or 33.93%
For the 2010-11 school year
District energy costs without efficiencies: $853,606.42
Actual costs: $524,153.04
Savings: $329,453.38 or 38.60%
Since the energy program was implemented:
District energy costs without efficiencies: $4,138,796.29
Actual costs: $2,653,448.23
Savings: $1,485,348.06 or 35.89%
