                                               Cryomodules

•   Cryomodules are complex
     – Cavities made from pure Nb
     – Smooth & ultra clean surfaces
     – Cavity handling is crucial
     – Operate in 2K superfluid He
     – 1200 parts!

•   Cryomodules are expensive
•   Single most expensive component of the ILC
•   Must industrialize cavities, components, and
    maybe assembly
•   Developing the extensive infrastructure to
    build and test CM’s
•   FNAL leads an international team working to
    improve the TESLA CM design for ILC
    (DESY, INFN, KEK, CERN, SLAC, India, etc )
•   Global plug compatibility
•   Plan to have an improved ILC design ready
    for bids - deferred

      coordination in new pre-project organization

                        The Americas Program– Post 2012


The NML SRF string test plan & goals need to be established but the operation will
    not start until ~FY13. System tests are the obvious next step to the TDP R&D
           program. Cryostat component development would be part of this.

We would plan to keep the US SRF industrial base active at a minimally useful level
                        (~12 cavities per year, 1 cryomodule).

   Value engineering on the cryomodules will remain a highly leveraged activity.

                              Next Generation SRF :
                              Low loss re-entrant shapes, superstructures
                Barrel polishing (tumbling) to improve yield and reduce costs - now
    Automated processing – 2011 initial results (integrated cavity processing concept @ JLAB)
                            Thin films to reduce costs – 2011 initial results
     Multi-layer films to increase gradient significantly (and reduce costs) – 2011 initial results
                   Hydroforming to improve yield and reduce costs – no results yet
