                 Human Genetic Disorder Project
                                      Analysis and Reflection
Name: ______________________________________________ Date: ___________________ Per: _____
Genetic Disorder: ____________________________________________
Inheritance Pattern: __________________________________________

Analysis of Human Genetic Disorders
1. Find another disorder with the same inheritance pattern as yours: ________________________________
 How are the two disorders similar?

 How are the two disorders different?

2. Find a disorder with a different inheritance pattern than yours:__________________________________
 How are the two disorders similar?

 How are the two disorders different?

3. Find a disorder (not yours and not one listed in 1 or 2 above) which is
and one which is not fatal:________________________________________________________
 Why do you think that these disorders are so different?

4. Of all the disorders that you have examined, which one do you think is the worst? Give specific reasons for
   your answer.

5. How are genetic disorders different than communicable diseases (those spread by bacteria or viruses)?

6. Reflect, in a thoughtful paragraph, your personal thoughts about genetic disorders.
 How do genetic disorders affect you today? How might they affect you in the future? How do you feel
      about that?

Reflection on Your Understanding of Human Genetic Disorders
1. Read carefully the understanding and the essential/probing questions for this project:
Human genetic disorders may be passed from parents to children following the principles of genetic inheritance. Unlike
communicable or contracted diseases, genetic disorders cannot be cured and are not contagious. Genetic counselors and support
groups provide testing, information and counseling services to families with genetic disorders

    Essential/Probing Questions:
    1. Why can’t genetic disorders be cured?
    2. How can the principles of genetics be applied to predict the chance of inheriting a genetic disorder?
    3. How would you feel if you discovered you or a family member had a genetic disorder? Where would you seek support and
    4. If you and your spouse were carriers of a genetic disorder, what decisions would you make about having children?

2. Rate your proficiency on each of the knowledge and skill areas for this project on our 4-1 scale.
    Knowledge and Skills:
_____ Identify the different inheritance patterns of genetic disorders
_____ Compare and contrast the incidence, symptoms, prognosis, and treatment of genetic disorders
_____ Interpret and analyze genetic pedigrees and karyotypes to trace and predict genetic disorders
_____ Utilize effective and efficient internet research skills
_____ Interpret and communicate source literature in your own words
_____ Effectively and creatively present information

3. Rate your proficiency on each of the facets of understanding to be demonstrated for this project (4-1 scale).
Facets of Understanding to be Demonstrated:
____ Explanation: Explain the symptoms, prognosis, and treatment of a selected genetic disease.
____ Application: Use the principles of genetic inheritance to predict the chance of inheriting a genetic disorder. Use pedigrees
and karyotypes to track genetic disorders in a family lineage.
____ Perspective: Assume the role of a genetics counselor to recommend testing and provide information to a person or family
                      with a genetic disorder.
____ Empathy: Reflect on the feelings you would have and the decisions you would make if you or a family member had a
genetic disorder. How would having a genetic disorder change your life?
____ Self Knowledge: What are the limits of my understanding of human genetic disorders? How effective was I in completing
this project? Did my choices and strategies reflect my learning styles and the strategies that work best for me?

4. Reflect on this assignment. Was it valuable to you? Did it help you improve your understanding of genetic
diseases? What could make this assignment better? Is there a better way for you to learn about genetic
