Have you ever seen a dragon-
fly? If you have, you probably noticed
how it darts around at amazing
speeds. It flies fast to catch its food.
While flying the dragonfly curves its
legs into a basket which it uses to
catch other flying insects (flies, gnats,
By: Noe Brown and mosquitoes). Then the dragonfly
puts the prey into its mouth which has
very strong teeth. Other times it will
hover over a stream in search of food.
After mating the female dragonfly will
lay the eggs in a nearby river or
                       stream. Sometimes the male
accompanies her on this trip. The
dragonfly has four veined wings, eyes
Back to The Table of that cover most of their head, thin

                       legs, and one shiny exoskeleton.
The grasshopper is an insect with
three body parts. It has a small head
which consists two long antennae and
two small eyes. Its thorax is slender and
long although its abdomen is short and
stubby. When the female lays its eggs it
digs a small hole in the field that it lives
in which is three to two centimeters
By: Chad Punch deep with one of its organs called a
ovipositor. The grasshopper lays sixty to
eighty eggs at a time. The eggs are
seven to eight mm in length and are

No, spiders aren’t insects. They are arachnids. Some spiders can
grow to be as big as your hand. There are also other kinds of
spiders like the Fisher Spider, Boas Spider, Crab Spider, Raft
Spider and Wolf Spider. Arthropods make up over 75% of the
world’s animal species. Arthropods include animals such as
insects, crustaceans and arachnids. The largest group of
Arthropods are the insects. The next largest group is the
crustaceans including centipedes and millipedes. Arthropods
have limbs with joints that allow them to move. They also have an
exoskeleton, which is a hard, external skeleton. Their body cavity
contains the nervous system, circulatory system, reproductive
                   system and digestive system.

Have you ever seen a beetle? Well, I have. It’s your
turn. Beetles are called insects or you could use its scientific
name Coleopteran. Beetles have four wings. There is a way
to know if it is an insect. Count the legs. Beetles have six
legs. If you see an animal with more than six or less than six
legs that means it is not a insect. Coleopteran is by far the
largest of the insect orders. At the latest count, there were
some 2,900 described species in the world. More are being
identified and cataloged every year. This is about one third of
the total number of insect species in North America. North of
Mexico there is about 2,800 species of beetles. Since insects
are the most numerous of all the earth’s creatures the beetles
                     are the numerical world champions.
Beetles are neat, because they fly and crawl very well.
They are so cool and small.

The honey Bee lives in large colonies of flat wax based
honey- comb hanging vertically. My insect works by a certain
age. From a series of glands on their abdomen, they use wax
to form the walls. They cap the comb. My insect moves from
place to place. When walking you can see light colored
pollen baskets on the honeybees rear small legs. Honeybees
are covered with outer hair on them. My insect eats nectar
from flowers. Honeybees survive winter as a colony .The
queen begins egg laying in winter to prepare for Spring.
Color varies, but generally they are yellow with brown stripes.
Their coats are furry short hair they are 1.3cm (1/2inch). Their
legs are not generally visible while flying. The Bee dies after
stinging.
Honey Bee honey is sweet, but the stinger is not.

Hello my name is Mosquito. I live in the United
States, and sometimes I go to Florida. I fly around and
bite people. I fly around to get from place to place, and
sometimes I land on the ground. I am covered by an
exoskeleton. I eat blood from animals and people for
my eggs to develop. I am no longer poisonous, but I
carry diseases. If I were poisonous, you would get
infected. I lay eggs so that I can hatch my babies. My
body parts are my head, thorax, abdomen. I have two
narrow wings, feathery antennae, and I am supported
by a slender neck. Beware of my bite, I love blood.

The most distinguishing trait of an ants behavior is sociability.
Ants do not act individually. They behave according to the needs
of the colony in roles dictated by the castle into which they are
born. The life cycle of the ant generally has four stages: egg,
larva, pupa, and adult. Most ants live from 6 to 10 weeks.
Although certain queens may live for as long as 15 years, and
some worker ants live for 7 years. Some ants can have up to
three queens. The queen lays all the eggs, while the workers just
work. The queen feeds her babies with her own saliva. There are
thirty –five thousand kinds of ants in this world. The ant’s
exoskeletons are on the outside of their body. The ant’s
exoskeleton is made of chitin. Ants are also one of the smallest
animals on earth. Hold on to your food at a picnic, because I will
carry it away. Back to Table of Contents

Have you ever seen a real live cricket before? I have, they are very
interesting. Scientists today have found at least 1,000 different kinds of crickets.
Most crickets do not fly although rough, hard, shiny wing covers lie across the
back. Under the outer wings are two tiny wings that are useless for flying. But
crickets can jump long distances and they are very quick. Crickets eat on plant
foliage, but they will eat other small insects. The most common field cricket of
the United States and southern Canada is black and at least 1 inch (2.5
centimeters) long with antennae longer than its body. In the summer time,
crickets live in fields, beneath wood, rocks, or other debris. It digs a burrow that
has a tiny chamber at the end. The burrow is used for shelter when the cricket
is not feeding. In the season of Fall, the female cricket deposits egg in the
ground that hatches in the following summer time. But crickets are different
from other insects. Crickets do not go through pupa development stages after
hatching from the egg. In these stages the baby cricket looks nothing like an
adult cricket. The outer covering of a cricket is an exoskeleton. Listen to my
cricket sound. It will bring you good luck.

Do you know what a Praying Mantis is?
A Praying Mantis is an insect that lives in North America.
Some people say that they are very bad bugs, but they
are a really a big help to the world. They get rid of all of
those pesky bugs. My insect has an exoskeleton. They
use their long front legs with spines for catching and
holding their prey. My insect can not fly that's why it
catches its prey that way. The insect has body parts
such as antennae, thorax, abdomen, legs, head and,
spines on their front legs. Also my insect is not
poisonous like some people think. They are almost only
green and brown. Now you almost know everything

The Termite lives in wood or dirt. It also eats wood and dirt.
It has three body parts, the head, abdomen, and thorax. Did
you know that a queen termite can lay 75,000 babies a day?
Did you know that a king termite just sits around doing
nothing ,and it’s with the queen all the time? Well, they do.
The soldier termites defend the king and queen and the hive.
Some of the termites are in Africa and South America.
Termites have an exoskeleton, which means a skeleton out
side of his body. They can do a lot of damage to your homes,
because they eat wood. The worker termite just works all day
and night working for the king and queen to make the hive
bigger. Sometimes the worker takes the queens eggs to one
of the places in the hive for the them to grow.
That’s what you need to know about a termite, but watch out for them,

Have you ever seen a Scorpion?
Scorpions live in warm, dry regions throughout the world.
They hide by day and hunt by night. Their covering is straw-
colored and a shiny black. Scorpions eat by their claws.
Their hollow spine allows the poison to be squeezed into
their pray. Scorpions lay about 40 eggs. You will only see
two Scorpions together if they are fighting or mating. After
mating the female will kill and eat the male. Scorpions are
relative of spiders, ticks, mites, and crabs, together they are
a class of Arachnida. They have exoskeletons. The Scorpion
has a head and a thorax together with the legs, tail and the
claws. Scorpions crawl to place to place. The babies live on
their mother’s back for a few days before they hunt for
themselves. Scorpions real name is Scorpionida.

Have you ever seen a walking stick before in your life?
The walking stick lives in the rainforests. They also live in
warm places. The walking stick is able to cling on a plant and
look like a stick. The insect is a camouflage color. This insect
moves very slowly. It eats the leaves of a blackberry plant,
and it also eats its own molt. Walking sticks lay there eggs
under the ground, they remain there tell they hatch. The
walking stick has a head, along body, legs, antennae, and
their camouflage color makes them look like a stick. Walking
sticks are measured about 2 to 3 three inches long. Kentucky
men use walking sticks on the farm to help watch for other
animals like snakes and other critters.
Beware of the walking stick. You may pick it up, look at it,
and scream! Back to Table of Contents

A yellow jacket lives in stuff found on the ground like
paper, plastic and other things. Some yellow jackets stay
at home, because it has rained. They can’t fly in the rain,
so the yellow jacket stays home and takes care of the
nest and the baby yellow jackets. When the yellow
jackets get hungry, and it’s not that wet, they will fly
place to place. Sometimes yellow jackets have yellow
with black stripes, and others have black with yellow
stripes. Sometimes they can be poisonous, but you will
not get really sick. Sometimes the yellow jacket lays
their eggs in their nest. A yellow jacket has head, thorax,
                        and abdomen.
Yellow Jackets were fun to study.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when the word “butterfly” is
mentioned? Well, most people would think that they are about as fun and exciting
as blank piece of paper! Actually, they are very interesting in many different ways.
The butterfly transfers from one place to another by flying. Once they get to the
place, which can be especially in open or disturbed locations such gardens,
dunes, and old fields, they go from flower to flower and drop the pollen into the
flowers. They get the pollen from the first flower and drop it in the next. The pollen
pollinates the flower so that it can grow new flowers.
Butterflies lay eggs when they are caterpillars; they lay them under a fresh leaf
and then take off. Butterflies prefer nectar from 3-6 feet high plants, especially
cosmos, thistles, red clovers, blazing star, and other plants and flowers. My
insect the butterfly is not poisonous. It is a help to all flowers. One of the
beautiful butterflies is the painted lady butterfly. It has an outer covering of
colors. The upper side of the wing is orange brown with darker wing bases. The
fore-wing has a black patch and white bars on the leading edge. The hind wing
has a row of five small black spots and some blue scales. The under side has a
black brown and gray pattern with four eyespots. Every insect has three body
parts: the head, the thorax and the abdomen and so does the butterfly.

A stink bug lives in the United States and parts of
Southern Canada. They emit a terrible odor. The stink bug
has six legs they crawl and fly. They eat cabbage, cotton,
and nearby roadside vegetation. A stink bug does lay eggs.
The eggs are yellow to green and very tiny. They emerge into
nymphs and eventually are fully grown in host plants. The
adult stink bug has four wings and a triangular speculum.
Many stink bugs are brightly colored or have conspicuous
                                marks.
I had fun learning about the stinkbug, but please don’t use
                           it for perfume.

Do you want to know about my insect? If you do, he sucks yours
blood and will bite you. When my insect is on a dog, he starts to search
everywhere to find a nice spot to suck its blood. If you hear your dog
bark and start to scratch himself, that means a flea has just sucked his
blood. They will suck until they run out of breath. Does your dog sleep
with you and then go outside? If so, he might have fleas. So you better
check him until you scrub all the fleas off. My insect lives in all sorts of
places. For example: holes and grass. My insect lays eggs. Its eggs are
the size of a pinhead. My insect’s body parts are abdomen, thorax,
head, and it has no wings. The body is thin and flat, they have fragile
legs so they can jump. There are more than 2400 species of fleas world
wide, and almost all of them are really tiny, tiny. Before people
started bathing everyday, fleas were just an ordinary part of life for
                     humans, and everyone had them.

Cock roaches are the most common roaches in the world. They live in sewers,
basements, and may move outdoors into yards during worm weather. They also
can live in your house and underneath your sink. American cockroaches are
reddish brown and have a yellowish on the body regions be hind the head.
They feed on a wide variety of plant and animal material they also eat crackers.
Cockroaches are not poisonous they are common roaches. My Insect moves to
place to place by flying or climbing walls female cockroaches produce egg
cases and carry them protruding from the tip of the abdomen for about two
days. Egg cases are then generally placed on a surface in a hidden location.
My Insects body part egg cases are 3/8 inch’s long, brown, and purse shaped.
Immature cockroaches emerge from egg cases in 6 to 8 weeks and producing
average of 150 young. Cockroaches are also know as water bugs and palmetto
bugs are among the most difficult household pests to control.
