5       Introduction
5.1     Scope
The purpose of this EICD is to document the electrical interfaces between the PREMOS
Experiment and PGCU and PCDU.


5.2     Model Compatibility

The present description applies to the PREMOS Prototype, and to the Protoflight Model
(PFM). The Prototype will be build mainly for internal use and possibly for software interface
tests at CNRS.

6           Overall concept


6.1         General description & block diagram

                                                                          PREMOS include the complete detectors
                                                                          (Filterradiometers and absolute Radiometers),
                                                                          the analog and digital electronics for the signal
                               PREMOS
                                                                          acquisition and control electronics.
                                                                          PREMOS communicate directly to the “Carte
                                                                          DSP” on the PGCU via one RS422 links. All
                                                                          science data, status data and also the
                     3 3 .6 V                         D ata &             telecommands are sending trough one full
                     P r im a r y                     C o m m an ds       duplex RS422 data connection.
                     P o w er                         L in e s            PREMOS include also the Power converter to
                                                                          generate the secondary voltages out of the
                                                                          33.6V primary power.
               PCDU                            PGCU                       PREMOS is powered via two BNR’s, one, to
    (P o w er C o n tro l &          ( P I C A R D G e s t io n           power the two PREMOS internal DC/DC’s, and
    D is t r ib u t io n U n it )   d e la C h a r g e U t ile )          the other to supply the high current loads.
                                                                          Additional there is one digital line between
                                                                          PREMOS and PGCU for time synchronization.

         7.2.3 Mating Requirements
         7.2.3.1Connector Savers
Connector Savers for J301, J302 and J303 will be provided by PMOD. The corresponding
mating does not alter for the cables by using the connector savers.
         7.2.3.2Flight Connectors
J301 (Data Connector), J302 (Power Connector), J303 (Heater Connector) are flight
connectors. The test connectors will only be used for pre-launch activities.

         7.2.4 Interface Cables
PICARD (CNRS) shall provide all Interface cables.
Explicit: PMOD will not deliver any Interface cable.
Basic Specifications for the Interface Cables:

     -   Power cable is not shielded but twisted.
     -   The data lines shall be individually (paired) shielded – shield is connected on both
         sides to connector’s backshell.
     -   The Heater cable is not shielded but twisted.

11           Data Transfer
11.1 Power considerations
PREMOS are basically acquiring data during orbit daytime. To keep the temperature
on PREMOS stable as possible, no internal subunit short time power switching is ex­
ecuted during flight. That means all units are switched on all the time.
In addition to this strategy the heatsink for all sensor heads is temperature stabil­
ized to 20°C ± 0.3K (tbc).


11.2 Science considerations
PREMOS contain three Filterradiometers (FR). Each FR contains four channels equipped with
different filters. Additional to the FR sensors PREMOS contains two PMO6 absolute
Radiometers (RM) to measure the total sun irradiance.

11.3 PREMOS Mode Definitions
By default PREMOS stays in one of the following modes, for some exceptions it is possible to
stay in a not predefined mode:

OFF Mode:   PREMOS is not powered, the two BNR’s are switched off, no data are
                  produced, and all covers shall be closed
TRANSITION Mode: PREMOS is partly powered, the two BNR’s are switched on, Aux-HK and
                  CCC-HK blocks are produced, all covers shall be closed
NIGHT Mode: PREMOS is complete powered, the two BNR’s are switched on, Aux-HK, PMO6-
                  HK, CCC-HK and one science data block per minute containing the
                  calibration data, are produced, all covers shall be closed
SCIENCE Mode:    PREMOS is complete powered, the two BNR’s are switched on, Aux-HK,
                  PMO6-HK, CCC-HK and SCIENCE Data are produced, Covers off the
                  active Sensors are open

11.5 Measurement and Calibration Mechanism

        11.5.1Channel calibration
For VFC calibration three voltage levels: 0V (GND), 2.5V (HS) and 5V (FS) are provided to
each multiplexer.
For the channel 1 to 8, its foreseen to do a full calibration every 90 Minutes. For science
measurements 9.911sec integration time, for calibration 0.34sec integration time is
foreseen. Calibration integration takes place once at the end of every minute.
For channel 9 and 10 (PMO6 Channels) the calibration takes 9.911sec every minute during
FR science integration gate 6.

                                   11.5.2Science Data Blocks
PREMOS transmits science data via RS422 directly to the EGCU. All ten VFC-Channels have
an integration time of 9.911sec, which results in a resolution of 24 bits.
Both UV-Channels of Head A, but only one at a time, can switch to an integration time of
minimal 99.1ms. To make things easier PREMOS transmits the results for every integration
time with a resolution of 3 bytes.
The two radiometer science measurements start with the full minute synchronization pulse.
After 20 seconds the radiometer science measurements are finished and the shutter will
toggle.
The Filter radiometer measurements are continuously ongoing.
For the science data PREMOS has two different science data blocks. The first one contains
the low rate science data for the channels with an integration time of 9.911 seconds. The
second one contains the data with the integration time of 99.1 msec.
For any data order the little-endian format (LSByte first, LSBit first within the Byte) (tbc) will
be used.

11.6 UART Settings
The settings for the UART are the followings:
Baud Rate: 19200, 8 Data Bit, 1 Stop Bit, no Parity Bit, no flow control

11.7 Data Blocks

        11.7.1Low Level protocol
Serial communication to/from PREMOS uses the ESTEC Data Link Format in Binary mode. We
include this specification here for convenience.
Data are sent/received in packets of 8-bit bytes. User-data are embedded in a frame that
consists of a number of leading and trailing bytes as follows:

Intel byte ordering means, that bytes of multi-byte quantities are transmitted with

During send of the EDLF-record, byte stuffing as shown in the following table shall be

11.8 House Keeping
A single Housekeeping Measurement has a resolution of 12 bits (tbc). To keep it simple
PREMOS pack 12 bits in the lower 12 bits of a word.
Housekeeping measurements starts with signal 1 (PMO6 Heatsink Temp A) every minute
after receiving of the synchronisation pulse. Every second the housekeeping multiplexer
switch to the next signal. The PMO6 HK-Block will be transmitted, when the ten PMO6 house­
keeping measurements are completed. The second block will be transmitted, when all auxili­
ary HK signals are measured.
PREMOS sends every minute three different housekeeping blocks.

several bytes of argument data and one command identification.

If MCEI = 0 the Motor command will be executed during the next “shutter / cover enable”
period, see Figure 21, otherwise the command is executed immediately. This is not valid for
the lockers; the locker commands (Byte4) will be executed always immediately.

Hint:
In case of an emergency switch off, commanded from the onboard SW, bit MCEI shall be 1,
to execute the cover commanding immediately. Shutters can be left open.
To close all covers immediate send the following command:

        15.2.1Detector heaters
Each detector FR head comprises 2 different heater stages. (Heater AB = 140mW; Heater
CD = 280mW). On previous space experiments with a similar design, no heater was needed
to elevate the head temperature. Default state is heater AB on only.
These heaters are also used to preheat the filters before opening the cover/shutters for
measurements (tbc).


        15.2.2Thermal control heater
To keep the temperature on the instrument heat sink stable, PREMOS contains two thermal
control heater circuits.
The heaters are located direct on the heat sink.
The heater power is controlled with pulse width modulation (base frequency is ~1Hz)
The maximum heater power is 6 watts (tbc).

15.3 Cover
Each detector, Filterradiometer and Absolute Radiometer, is protected with one cover
mechanism, which consists of a paraffin actuator to release or lock the mechanism, and a
stepper motor. The stepper motor rotates the cover by 90 deg to open or close the entrance
aperture of the detector.

All cover mechanisms are released once on mission begin and remain released.
During the mission the covers of the not active sensors are closed. During night
time all covers are closed.
It is not a risk for a cover motor or the according locker if you send an open or close
command to move a still locked cover.

15.4 Power Switch
PREMOS will be switched on/off by the PI-DPU by switching on/off the 33.6V primary
line. After switch on the primary 33.6V power for PREMOS, only the digital electron­
ics circuits of PREMOS are powered. The other groups are switched on/off with dedi­
cated TC's.
To keep the thermal environment on PREMOS stable, no internal short time power
switching is executed. Normally all groups are constantly powered.
Except:
                - The actuators and the relevant drivers are only powered, when one
                   of the actuators is used, otherwise all are switched off.

foreseen.

16.2 Latch up Mechanism
PREMOS contain a latch-up detection mechanism. In case of a latch up, all secondary
voltages are switched off. It is not foreseen to have a special flag line from PREMOS to PGCU
to indicate that a latch up is occurred.
PGCU recognize that PREMOS is switched off, if PGCU will not receive any data from PREMOS
for longer than 1 Minute.
To switch on PREMOS again, follow the “Switch on after a Latchup” Procedure.



16.3 ASIC Reload
The PREMOS ASIC shall be reloaded once every orbit. This Action shall prevent that a SEU
causes more than one orbit data loss.
For this action a special ASIC reload Command is foreseen (see Table 23).
