TIPS AND TRICKS
SCREENSHOTS
Hold down the Home key and click the lock/off button on the top of the unit to take a screenshot. Your iPhone will
make a shutter sound like when you take a picture. Your screenshot will be added to the Camera Roll under the
Photos app.
ENTER PUNCTUATION QUICKLY
To enter punctuation while using the on-screen keyboard, hold down the Punctuation key and slide your finger
over to the Period button. Then release it. (This works for all punctuation, of course.)
TYPING NUMBERS
Also holding down the numbers key, makes the number keypad come up. Without removing your finger you can
find the button you want. Release your finger and your number/punctuation is inserted and you go back to the
alpha keyboard automatically.
ENTER PERIODS QUICKLY
Click the space bar twice to enter a period and a space.
CAPS LOCK MODE
Double tap the Caps key on the keyboard and it will change to blue and remain in Caps mode until you tap it again.
The iPhone does include a Caps Lock feature -- the trick is finding it so you can turn it on. Here's how:
1. Tap Settings
2. Tap General
3. Tap Keyboard
4. Tap the Enable Caps Lock slider
The Caps Lock slider is like a toggle switch. Tapping it once enables the feature, tapping it a second time shuts it
back off.
Using the Caps Lock is really simple: Quickly tap the Shift key twice. Instead of the usual glowing arrow that tells
you your next letter will be upper case, the whole Shift key turns blue. Tapping the Shift key again turns Caps Lock
back off.
UNDO TYPING
To quickly undo typing recently done, just shake the iPhone. A pop-up will ask you if you want to do the undo
feature.
RIDE THE DOT-COM WAVE
When keying in Web addresses, the iPhone gives you a very useful .com button that lets
you add the four characters in one press. But as with the desktop version of Safari, you
can even leave that out: Safari will automatically add it for you. Bonus tip: hold down
the .com button; you'll be presented with a list of alternate domain endings, such as .net,
.edu, and .org.
KEEP SAFARI'S ADDRESS BAR HANDY
Ever scroll pretty far down a Web page, only to find that the address bar has disappeared? No need to scroll back
up—instead, tap the top part of the screen. The address bar will reappear, regardless of where you are on the
actual Web page.
GET A BIGGER KEYBOARD IN SAFARI
Before you begin browsing, rotate the phone horizontally. Now tap the address bar. You should now have a wider
keyboard
USE ITUNES WITH NO CREDIT CARD
One thing we've shared with our teachers is how to download free things from iTunes without having to set up an
account using a credit card.
1. Log out of your iTunes account
2. Search for a free app in the iTunes Store
3. Click Get App
4. Click Create Account
5. Complete account information
6. On Method of Payment choose NONE (This is the only way this option is available.)
LOADING DISCOVERY STREAMING VIDEOS ONTO AN IPOD
If your school district subscribes to Discovery Streaming, you can load most of these videos to your iPod touch.
1. Log into Discovery Streaming
2. Search for Editable videos (Due to copyright: only videos marked as editable may be loaded onto the iPod)
3. Choose to download your video segment as a Quicktime file.
4. Open iTunes and choose to add the file to your library.
5. Right click on the video file within the iTunes library.
6. Choose "Create iPod or iPhone version".
7. Sync the file to your iPod touch.
