CVSL & APDC’s services for PWDs in Puttalam district are as follows:

Ayeshi great example for other children!
Hi, I am Ayeshi Dilanki (9year old girl) diagnosed by the doctor Spinal Muscular Atrophy-SMA (Type-II). Currently I am receiving therapeutic intervention from Child Vision’s Rehabilitation Centre Puttalam and received Child Size Customized Wheel Chair with cutout tray. I am studying at Kattaikadu Roman Catholic Tamil Maha Vidhyalaya, grade 4. In my classroom, I have 32 friends including me and I am 5th place in the recent term test exam. I am very much enjoying my study along with my good friends. There is no discrimination or bullies in and around the classroom, further my class teacher and other teachers always motivating me. I attended pre students’ selection scholarship examination and I got 32 marks out of 40. Now we are getting ready for the next year scholarship examination and I kindly ask you to pray for me for the good result in the scholarship examination. Please see my photos and I request other children like me, don’t sit at home, and go to school. That will always helps you when you are face challenges in the future. Thank you. Centre based rehabilitation & intervention. Physiotherapy services. Occupational therapy services. Speech & Language therapy services. Counseling services. Early intervention program for Infants (EIP). Conducting of one-to-one sessions for children who have speech difficulties. Disability detection camps along with local authorities, I/NGOs. Provision of assistive devices and provision of eye glasses after proper consultation from the professionals. Referral to other network like: hospitals and other organisations around the country. Conduction of monthly meetings at CVSL’s premises for parents of children with disabilities and village level meetings. Fulfilling needs of children & adult with disAbilities along with Human Rights Commission through their Human Rights Monitoring Mission. Conduction of various types of awareness and training programs for parents of children with disAbilities as per their identified needs along with government and I/NGOs. Building leadership capacity of parents of children with disAbilities. Telephonic and one-to-one guidance for service where available around the country for parents of children with disAbilities & adult with disAbility. Technical support for parents to fill the various types forms which available at Department of Social Services. Advocacy in different level about mainstreaming disability in every sector. Providing the above basic facilities through CVSL’s Disability Resource Centre (DRC) since 2001.

World Vision Sri Lanka’s Operational Director Mr.Jude Priyantha, Mr.Nevil Selastian World Vision Puttalam and Mr.Premadasa Abeysinghe, President of Physically Handicapped Technician Association Colombo visited CVSL as their exposure and Learning visit to know more about CVSL’s disability management program and APDC’s function in Puttalam districts on 22nd July 2009, The meeting ended fruitfully (Please see photo clips).

Weekly and monthly rehabilitation for adult
& children with disabilities:

Caritas/SEDEC’s national and local animators visited CVSL as their exposure and Learning visit to know more about CVSL’s disability management program and APDC’s function in Puttalam districts on 07th June 2009, organized by Don Gnocchi Foundation based in Marawila. The meeting ended fruitfully (Please see photo clips).

APDC’s monthly meeting…..
Associations of Parents of Disabled Children (APDC) met on 19th July 2009 at CVSL premises @ 09am to 12.30pm. The following matters were discussed:     How to motivate parents to do home management intervention Continuation of weekly and monthly rehabilitation clinic. Next volunteer placement from VSO UK. Progress of own fund raising by selling tickets to the general public by APDC members.

CVSL’s weekly and monthly rehabilitation clinics are conducted on 12th & 26th July 2009 from 08.30am to 03.00pm. 62 clients attended during the rehabilitation sessions and received Physiotherapy and Speech & language Therapy services. Home management training program are advised to the parents and care givers during the therapy sessions. Both therapist expressed there are significant improvement in the functional and physical status of many children. Due to the involvements, fullest support and proper follow-up of parents and care givers. CVSL, Therapist, Parent’s and care givers are extremely satisfied with children’s progress as well as the Paediatrician of BH Puttalam. Please see the progress photo clips.

Action:  First training program for selected 30 parents on basic therapeutic intervention, identification of disabled person and home management by our volunteer Physiotherapist Mr.Bandara. The program supported by the Australian High Commission/DAP.  The development of community volunteer groups and awareness strategy for selected 15 parents - TOT program (who in a later stage will extend training to members of the CBO’s and other agencies and groups). The program supported by the VSO UK-Sri Lanka under their small grand.  Next volunteer placement in pipeline. The above matters are discussed and solutions sought after.

Human Rights Monitoring Mission (HRMM)…

ONE-2-ONE Session for Children with Speech & Language Difficulties
Around 23 children are under the above program and Mrs.Niyara conducts a day off one-to-one sessions at our premises for the children with speech & language problems and movement/control therapy on Monday-Saturday (different time for each child).

The above mission work was started April 2009 by the HRC (Human Right’s Commission - National Protection and Durable Solution for IDPs Project) along with various NGOs and government departments. The objective of this mission is to find out the real needs and problems of the Internally Displaced People who are in the welfare camp since 1990 from the north of Sri Lanka and develop the village profile. CVSL & APDC also given their inputs in the areas of Karaitivu, Fareedhabath and Salter-I welfare camps and identified 13 PWDs and children with disabilities. Currently 13 are receiving therapeutic intervention from our centre on a weekly and monthly basis.

During July, 5 children attended regular sessions and Speech & Language therapist was advised to discharge 3 children out of 5. The 3 children fully improved the following areas: Excellent progress and improvement of children’s tongue balances, lips movement, attention, eye contact, brain exercises and identification of body parts, exercises for finger movement, colorings and regular users of joint words as well as the preparation of sounds & project books which they are using for their day-today life.

Mr.Ajith Kumara aged 33years underwent right above knee amputation on 2nd February 2008 for suspected sarcoma. Child Vision SL with the support of Friend in Need Colombo provided him with a AK prosthesis for his greater independence in mobility. He has a small bicycle repair shop in the premises of his residence and is the sole bread winner of a family of four. Mr.Ajith Kumara has 2 children (girl & boy) who are of age 14 and 8 respectively. Currently both are schooling in grade 9 and 4 in a local school (10km away from his house). He is running his repair shop with very basic equipments and without proper spaces. He is living in a damaged cad Jan hut without cement flooring with his children. He is expecting to improve his bicycle repair shop and home modification with basic facilities and provide good friendly environment for his family, especially for his children. In response to his official request on 31st July our staff members along with APDC visited his place for general understanding of his conditions. We would appreciate any financial support or assistance provided to Mr.Ajith Kumara’s family for their wellbeing.

Early
Intervention Program (EIP):
In July ’09 Base hospital Puttalam has referred 09 infants as young as 15 days to one month old diagnosed with Erb’s Palsy, Torticolis and other 34month old infants diagnosed with seizure disorder, developmental delay for therapeutic interventions. Currently 9 infants are receiving weekly intervention at our centre and also Nikkawarettiya General Hospital. There is significant improvement and progress in children’s conditions. Mr.Bandara, Physiotherapist is teaching home management basic intervention training program are advises the parents and care givers during the therapy sessions.

Village APDC meeting…
There are 3 meeting was scheduled but due to some other practical problems, we post pond 2 meetings until September. On the 31st July 2009 at around 09.30am the meeting was held at Sembamadu welfare camp and 07 members were attended. The following issues were discussed: a. Welfare support from the Dept. Social Services. b. User friendly 12 toilets c. Ramp facilities for 12 members. d. Income-generation small project support. e. Awareness among community members on mainstreaming disability. Action: a. Further discussion with the SSOs through district APDC. b & c. Request to CVSL for finding donors. d. Approach supportive partners through CVSL. b. Further discussion with CVSL through district APDC. The next meeting on 6th September 2009 (Same village) and meeting ended with prayer.

Village HILIGHTS…02
Mr.A.H.Muzammil aged 47years, diagnosed with post polio residual Paralysis-PPRP. Child Vision SL along with Valvothayam Mannar provided him with a Tricycle for his greater independence in mobility. He has small radio repair shop in the premises of his residence and is the sole bread winner of a family of five. Mr.Muzammil has 3 children (2boys & a girl) who are of age 16 (School drop-out), 9 and 7 respectively. Currently both are schooling in grade 4 and 2 in a local school (6km away from his house). He is running his radio repair shop with very basic equipments and also doing mobile repairs work by using his tricycle in time to time. He is living in a cement house which is partly supported by the Ministry of Disaster & Re-settlement some time before. He is expecting to improve his radio repair shop and home modification with basic ramp facilities and provide good friendly environment for his family, especially for his children. In response to his official request on 31st July our staff members along with APDC has visited his place. We would appreciate any financial support or assistance provided to Mr.Muzamail s family for their wellbeing.

Master H.Azly Azad and H.Arshak Sharaf aged 15 and 10 respectively. The LRH (Lady Ridgeway Hospital) Colombo diagnosed with Haemophilia-A with long acting inhibitors and prescribed with APCC (Activated Prothrombin Complex Concentrate) - (FEIBA) injection. Currently both of them are schooling in grade 10 and 5 at Al-Aqsha National School at Kalpitiya Divisional Secretariat Division of Puttalam district. Mr.C.S.M.Haleemdeen father of the above mentioned children is the sole bread winner of a family of four. He is a local school teacher. The both children are urgently administered with APCC – (FEIBA) as per their condition, which is cost about SLR 70,200.00 (500 U vial) – GBP 390. It can use for both children in two times as per the medical consultant advices (Haematologist). Mr.Haleemdeen kindly appeal interested generous people to assist his children in this regard. In response to his recent official request on 31st July our staff members along with APDC has visited his place for general understanding of the above mentioned children and practical evaluation.
