SECTION 07610 - SHEET METAL ROOFING

This Guide Specification is intended to aid the Design Professional in specifying and detailing Umicore
Building Products USA Inc. VM ZINC® Double Lock Standing Seam roofing systems. It is the respon-
sibility of the Design Professional to verify that all conditions, materials, means and methods are properly
addressed and meet the requirements of local building code officials and jurisdictions.


PART 1 - GENERAL


1.1        RELATED DOCUMENTS

      A.   Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
           Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

      B.   Umicore Building Products USA Inc.’s Published Recommendations and Installation
           Instructions


1.2        SUMMARY

      A.   This Section includes the following sheet metal roofing:

           1.    VM ZINC® Zinc alloy Double Lock Standing-Seam (DLSS) metal roofing.

      B.   Related Sections include the following:

           1.    Division 5 Section "Steel Deck" for steel roof deck supporting sheet metal roofing.
           2.    Division 5 Section "Cold-Formed Metal Framing" for secondary support framing
                 supporting sheet metal roofing.
           3.    Division 6 Section "Rough Carpentry " for roof sheathing, vertical battens and skip
                 sheathing
           4.    Division 7 Section "Building Insulation" for roof insulation.
           5.    Division 7 Section "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim" for fascia, copings, flashings and
                 other sheet metal work not part of sheet metal roofing.
           6.    Division 7 Section "Roof Accessories" for accessories on roof.
           7.    Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" for field-applied sheet metal roofing sealants.


1.3        PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

      A.   General: Provide complete VM ZINC® Zinc alloy sheet metal roofing system, including, but
           not limited to roll formed metal roof pans, cleats, clips, anchors and fasteners, sheet metal
           flashing and drainage components related to sheet metal roofing, fascia panels, trim, wood
           battens, skip sheathing, underlayment, and accessories as indicated and as required for a
           weather tight installation.

      B.   Installation: All VM ZINC® sheet metal roofing systems and materials shall be installed using
           the best available industry standards and the means and methods recommended in the
           manufacturer’s published information, or whichever is more stringent.

  C.    Wind-Uplift Resistance: Provide complete roofing system including roll formed sheet metal
        VM ZINC® roofing capable of resisting the design pressures indicated. Provide clips,
        fasteners, and clip spacing of type indicated and with capability to sustain, without failure, the
        design loads. Design loads shall be established by the design professionals responsible for the
        project and local code requirements.

        1.    Design Uplift Pressures: [As indicated on Drawings by the design professional.]

              a.     Field: [As indicated in the Contract Documents].
              b.     Perimeter: [As indicated on Drawings].
              c.     Corner: [As indicated on Drawings].
              d.     Other: [As indicated on Drawings].
        2.    Provide metal roof panel assemblies that comply with UL 1897 for wind-uplift resistance
              class indicated. See Section 3 of this specification for specific assemblies and wind-
              uplift ratings. Specifier shall verify that product and assemblies are listed in UL's
              current "Roofing Materials & Systems Directory."

  D.    Thermal Movements: Provide sheet metal roofing that allows for thermal movements resulting
        from the following maximum change (range) in ambient and surface temperatures by preventing
        buckling, opening of joints, hole elongation, overstressing of components, failure of joint
        sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. Provide clips that resist rotation
        and avoid shear stress as a result of sheet metal roofing thermal movements. Base engineering
        calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky
        heat loss.

        1.    Temperature Change (Range): Shall be stipulated by the design professional based on
              local climate and conditions.

  E.    Water Infiltration: Provide sheet metal roofing that does not allow water infiltration to building
        interior, with metal flashing and connections of sheet metal roofing lapped to allow moisture to
        run over and off the material.

1.4        SUBMITTALS

      A.   Product Data: For each product indicated. Include details of construction relative to materials,
           dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes.

      B.   Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation layouts of sheet metal roofing, including
           plans, elevations, and keyed references to termination points. Distinguish between shop- and
           field-assembled work. Shop drawings to be reviewed by Umicore Building Products USA, Inc.
           prior to fabrication. Include the following:

           1.    Details for forming sheet metal roofing, including seams and dimensions.
           2.    Details for joining and securing sheet metal roofing, including layout of fasteners, clips,
                 and other attachments. Include pattern of seams.
           3.    Details of termination points and assemblies, including fixed points.
           4.    Details of expansion joints, including showing direction of expansion and contraction.
           5.    Details of roof penetrations.
           6.    Details of edge conditions, including eaves, ridges, valleys, rakes, crickets, and
                 counterflashings.
           7.    Details of special conditions.
           8.    Details of connections to adjoining work.
           9.    Details of the required accessory items.
           10.   Sheet metal roofing and attachments.
           11.   Roof-mounted items including roof hatches, equipment supports, pipe supports and
                 penetrations, lighting fixtures, snow guards, and items mounted on roof curbs.

      C.   Samples for Verification: For each type of exposed component required, prepared on Samples
           of size indicated below:

           1.    Sheet Metal Roofing: 12 inches (300 mm) long by actual panel width, including finished
                 seam. Include fasteners, cleats, clips, battens, closures, and other attachments.
           2.    Trim and Closures: 12 inches (300 mm) long. Include fasteners and other exposed
                 accessories.
           3.    Accessories: 12-inch- (300-mm-) long Samples for each type of accessory.
           4.    Snow Guards: Full-size Sample.

      D.   Qualification Data: For firms and persons specified in the “Quality Assurance” Article to
           demonstrate their capabilities and experience. Include lists of completed projects with project
           names and addresses, names and addresses of architects and owners, and other information
           specified.


1.5        QUALITY ASSURANCE

      A.   Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer who has completed sheet metal
           roofing similar in material, design, forming method and extent to that indicated for this Project
           and with a record of successful in-service performance. Provide evidence of installer
           participation in Umicore Building Products USA Inc.® ProZinc Training Course.

  B.     Sheet Metal Roofing Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who
        custom-fabricate sheet metal roofing similar to that required for this Project and whose products
        have a record of successful in-service performance. Provide evidence of installer participation
        in Umicore Building Products USA Inc. ProZinc Training Course.

  C.    Sheet Metal Roofing Standard: Comply with VM ZINC® Architectural Binder, Installation
        Manual, or industry best standards, whichever is more stringent. Conform to dimensions and
        profiles shown unless more stringent requirements are indicated.

  D.    Mockups: Before installing sheet metal roofing, construct mockups for each form of
        construction required to verify selection made under Sample submittals and to demonstrate
        aesthetic effects and qualities of materials and execution. Build mockups to comply with the
        following requirements, using exposed and concealed materials and forming methods indicated
        for completed work.

        1.    Locate mockups in the location and of the size indicated or, if not indicated, as directed
              by the Architect.
        2.    Approval of mockups is for other material and construction qualities specifically
              approved by Architect in writing.
        3.    Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
              Documents contained in mockups unless such deviations are specifically approved by
              Architect in writing.
        4.    Approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of
              Substantial Completion.

  E.    Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. Review methods and
        procedures related to sheet metal roofing including, but not limited to, the following:

        1.    Meet with Owner, Architect, Roofing Consultant, Owner's insurer if applicable, sheet
              metal roofing Installer, and installers whose work interfaces with or affects sheet metal
              roofing including installers of roof accessories and roof-mounted equipment.
        2.    Review and finalize construction schedule and verify availability of materials, Installer's
              personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.
        3.    Review methods and procedures related to sheet metal roofing installation.
        4.    Examine substrate conditions for compliance with requirements, including flatness and
              attachment to structural members.
        5.    Review flashings, special roofing details, roof drainage, roof penetrations, equipment
              curbs, and condition of other construction that will affect sheet metal roofing.
        6.    Review governing regulations and requirements for insurance, certificates, and testing
              and inspecting if applicable.
        7.    Review temporary protection requirements for sheet metal roofing during and after
              installation.
        8.    Review roof observation and repair procedures after sheet metal roofing installation.
        9.    Document proceedings, including corrective measures and actions required, and furnish
              copy of record to each participant.

1.6        DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

      A.   Deliver metal coils, sheet metal roofing pans, components, and other sheet metal roofing
           materials so as not to be damaged or deformed. Package sheet metal roofing materials for
           protection during transportation and handling.

      B.   Unload, store, and erect sheet metal roofing materials in a manner to prevent bending, warping,
           twisting, and surface damage.

      C.   Stack materials on platforms or pallets, covered with suitable weather tight and ventilated
           covering. Store metal coils and sheet metal roofing materials to ensure dryness. Do not store
           metal coils or sheet metal roofing materials in contact with other materials that might cause
           staining, denting, or other surface damage.

      D.   Protect strippable protective covering on sheet metal roofing from exposure to sunlight and high
           humidity, except to extent necessary for period of sheet metal roofing installation.


1.7        COORDINATION

      A.   Coordinate installation of roof curbs, equipment supports, and roof penetrations.

      B.    Coordinate sheet metal roofing with rain drainage work, flashing, trim, and construction of
           metal decks, sheathing, purlins and rafters, parapets, walls, and other adjoining work to provide
           a leak proof, secure, and non-corrosive installation.

2.3        CLIPS AND FASTENERS

           requirements.

      B.   VM ZINC® Expansion Clips: 300 Series Stainless Steel Clips. Thickness: 0.024” (0.6mm)
           fixed base with 0.015” (0.4mm) thick sliding part. The sliding clip base incorporates 2-3/4” (70
           mm) slot which permits movement. The clip is pre-punched with counter-sunk holes for
           attachment. Designed to withstand negative load requirements. VM ZINC® Insulation Pressure
           Plate with Integral Clip: 300 Series Stainless Steel Pressure Plate. Thickness: 0.024” (0.6mm)
           fixed base with 0.015” (0.4mm) thick sliding part. The clip is pre-punched with counter-sunk
           holes for attachment. Designed to withstand negative load requirements. Clip and Plate
           Fasteners: Oval Head, Self-drilling screws, 300 Series Stainless Steel. All fasteners to seat in
           pre-punched countersunk holes of VM ZINC® Clips to eliminate potential for contact and
           abrasion between fastener head and panel. Fastener head profile shall eliminate telegraphing
           through metal panel. Fasteners shall be selected to resist all negative design load requirements.

           2.    Design professional and installer to confirm the withdraw and rupture performance for all
                 fastener and clip combinations during the submittal process.



2.4        Solder, Sealing and Cleaning Agents

      A.   Solder for Zinc: ASTM B 32, 60 percent lead and 40 percent tin with low antimony, as
           recommended by manufacturer.

      B.   Stripping

           1.    VM ZINC® Stripping Agent and Flux DECA-QUARTZ for removal of coating prior to
                 soldering

      C.   Low to Medium-Modulus Neutral-Curing Sealant: Where joint sealants of this type are
           indicated, provide products complying with the following:

           1.    Products: Available products include the following:
                 a.    .SikaFlex 11fc
                 b.    795; Dow Corning

           2.    Type and Grade: S (single component) and NS (nonsag).
           3.    Class: 25.
           4.    Use Related to Exposure: NT (nontraffic).
           5.    Stain-Test-Response Characteristics:      Nonstaining to         porous    substrates   per
                 ASTM C 1248.

2.5        ACCESSORIES

      A.   Sheet Metal Roofing Accessories: Provide components required for a complete sheet metal
           roofing assembly including trim, copings, fasciae, corner units, ridge closures, clips, flashings,
           sealants, and similar items. Match material and finish of sheet metal roofing, unless otherwise
           indicated.

           1.    Closures: Provide closures at eaves and ridges, fabricated of same metal as sheet metal
                 roofing.
           2.    Cleats: Mechanically seamed cleats formed from the following material:

                 a.      300 Series Stainless Steel

           3.    Backing Plates: Provide metal backing plates at panel end splices, fabricated from
                 material recommended by manufacturer.

      B.   Flashing and Trim: Formed from VM ZINC® PLUS zinc Sheet. Provide flashing and trim as
           required to seal against weather and to provide finished appearance. Locations include, but are
           not limited to, eaves, rakes, corners, bases, framed openings, ridges, fasciae, and fillers. Finish
           flashing and trim with same finish system as adjacent sheet metal roofing.


2.6        FABRICATION

      A.   General: Roll formed sheet metal roofing to comply with Umicore Building Products USA
           Inc.’s Published Recommendations and details reviewed by Umicore Building Products USA
           Inc., and industry best standards that apply to the design, dimensions (pan width and seam
           height), geometry, metal thickness, and other characteristics of installation indicated. Fabricate
           sheet metal roofing and accessories at the shop to greatest extent possible.

           1.    VM ZINC® 0.031 inch (0.80 mm) Double Lock Standing-Seam Roofing: double lock
                 standing-seam pans with finished seam height of 1 inch (25 mm)] or of 1-1/2 inches (38
                 mm).

      B.   Sheet metal roofing to allow for expansion in running work sufficient to prevent leakage,
           damage, and deterioration of the Work. Form exposed sheet metal work to fit substrates
           without excessive oil canning, buckling, and tool marks, true to line and levels indicated, and
           with exposed edges folded back to form hems.

           1.    Lay out sheet metal roofing so cross seams, when required, are made in direction of flow
                 with higher pans overlapping lower pans. Stagger cross seams.
           2.    Fold and cleat eaves and transverse seams.
           3.    Form and fabricate sheets, seams, strips, cleats, valleys, ridges, edge treatments, integral
                 flashings, and other components of metal roofing to profiles, patterns, and drainage
                 arrangements shown and as required for leak proof construction.

      C.   Metal Protection: VM ZINC® Panels and Materials shall not be stored or installed so that they
           come in contact with or are located beneath areas with copper or copper containing components.

PART 3 - EXECUTION


3.1        GENERAL ASSEMBLIES

      A.   Warm Roof Assemblies

           1.   Warm Roof 1 (limited to roof slopes >=1:12)

                a.    Structural substrate: Galvanized steel panel – 22 ga. (0.8mm) min., 20 ga. (1.0mm)
                      max. B-Module
                b.    Gypsum sheathing: ¼” Non-structural, glass mat embedded, water resistant
                      gypsum core panel. Verify span ratings of gypsum sheathing if alternate module
                      of steel panel substrate is specified. Mechanically attached with plates and screws.
                      Use maximum lengths possible to minimize number of joints. Locate edge joints
                      parallel to and on deck ribs. Stagger end joints of adjacent lengths of roof board.
                      Butt ends and edges
                c.    Vapor Barrier: Self adhering, SBS polymer modified, glass reinforced membrane.
                      Prime surface to receive vapor barrier.
                d.    Rigid Insulation: Minimum 25 psi Extruded Polystyrene, mechanically attached
                      with plates and screws. Stagger end joints of adjacent lengths of roof board. Butt
                      ends and edges so they form smooth transitions with no more than 1/16” of plane
                      change.
                e.    ½” Mineral Wool Insulation: Minimum compressive strength 14 PSI as per ASTM
                      C 165. Mechanically attached with plates and screws. Stagger end joints of
                      adjacent lengths of roof board. Butt ends and edges so they form smooth
                      transitions with no more than 1/16” of plane change.
                f.    Underlayment/Slip sheet: High permeability, triple layer spun bonded
                      polypropylene fabric lapped minimum 6” and sealed. If slope is <2:12 apply self
                      adhering membrane flashing to primed substrate at perimeter and valleys.
                g.    VM ZINC® PLUS standing seam roofing with double lock standing seams

           2.   Warm Roof 2 (limited to roof slopes >=1:12)

                a.    Structural substrate: Galvanized steel panel – 22 ga. (0.8mm) min., 20 ga. (1.0mm)
                      max. B-Module
                b.    Gypsum sheathing: ¼” Non-structural, glass mat embedded, water resistant
                      gypsum core panel. Verify span ratings of gypsum sheathing if alternate module

      B.   Cold Roof Assemblies

           1.    Cold Roof 1 (limited to roof slopes >1:12)

                 a.     Structural Sheathing: Minimum ¾” Exterior Grade Plywood. Insulation,
                        ventilation, and appropriate moisture vapor control measures should be verified by
                        a qualified design professional to reduce the potential for condensation beneath the
                        roofing components.
                 b.     Underlayment/Slip sheet: High permeability, triple layer spun bonded
                        polypropylene fabric lapped minimum 6” and sealed. If slope is <2:12 lap 12” and
                        seal, apply self adhering membrane flashing at perimeter and valleys.
                 c.     VM ZINC® PLUS standing seam roofing with 1” high double lock seams

           2.    Winter Climate Alpine Roof

                 a.     Include a Vertical Batten and Horizontal Skip Sheathing System to the systems
                        above: Dimensional treated lumber installed to resist wind uplift requirements.
                        Secured with screws to the structural substrate below. Batten system to provide
                        positive outside air flow beneath metal roofing components. Ventilation
                        requirements and details shall be provided by the architect.


3.2        EXAMINATION

      A.   Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
           requirements for installation tolerances, sheet metal roofing supports, and other conditions
           affecting performance of work.

           1.    Examine primary and secondary roof framing to verify that rafters, purlins, angles,
                 channels, and other structural panel support members and anchorages have been installed.
           2.    Examine solid roof sheathing to verify that sheathing joints are supported by framing or
                 blocking and that installation is within flatness tolerances.
           3.    Verify that substrate is sound, dry, smooth, clean, sloped for drainage, and completely
                 anchored, and that provision has been made for roof drains, scuppers, flashings, and
                 penetrations through sheet metal roofing.
           4.    For the record, prepare written report, endorsed by Installer, listing conditions detrimental
                 to performance of work.

      B.   Examine roughing-in for components and systems penetrating sheet metal roofing to verify
           actual locations of penetrations relative to seam locations of sheet metal roofing before sheet
           metal roofing installation.

      C.   Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.


3.3        UNDERLAYMENT AND VAPOR RETARDER INSTALLATION

      A.   Fabric Underlayment and Slip Sheet: Install underlayment/slip sheet on roof sheathing on
           continuous surface under sheet metal roofing. Use mechanical fasteners in the laps for
           anchorage. Apply tape as per manufacturer recommendation to seal the laps. Apply at locations

           indicated on Drawings, in shingle fashion to shed water, with lapped and taped joints of not less
           than 6 inches (150 mm). For slopes <2:12 increase laps to 12 inches (300 mm). Cover
           underlayment within 60 days.

      B.   Self-Adhering Sheet Underlayment: Install self-adhering sheet underlayment, wrinkle free, on
           continuous sheathing. Apply primer if required by underlayment manufacturer. Comply with
           temperature restrictions of underlayment manufacturer for installation; use primer rather than
           nails for installing underlayment at low temperatures. Apply at locations indicated on Drawings
           , in shingle fashion to shed water, with end laps of not less than 6 inches (150 mm) staggered 24
           inches (600 mm) between courses. Overlap side edges not less than 3-1/2 inches (90 mm). Roll
           laps with roller. Cover underlayment within 14 days.

      C.   Install flashings to cover underlayment to comply with project requirements.


3.4        INSTALLATION, GENERAL

      A.   General: Anchor sheet metal roofing and other components of the Work securely in place,
           with provisions for thermal and structural movement. Install fasteners, solder, welding rods,
           protective coatings, separators, sealants, and other miscellaneous items as required for a
           complete roofing system.

           1.    Field cutting of sheet metal roofing by torch is not permitted.
           2.    Provide metal closures at peaks rake edges rake walls and each side of ridge and hip caps.
           3.    Locate and space fastenings in uniform vertical and horizontal alignment.
           4.    Install ridge and hip caps as sheet metal roofing work proceeds.
           5.    Locate roofing splices over, but not attached to, structural supports. Stagger roofing
                 splices and end laps to avoid a four-panel lap splice condition.
           6.    Lap metal flashing over sheet metal roofing to allow moisture to run over and off the
                 material.

      B.   Allowable Erection Tolerance
           1.   Maximum Alignment Variation: 1/8 in (3 mm)

      C.   Fasteners: Use fasteners of type and size that will secure the roof components in compliance
           with requirements of the project. Clip fasteners shall be selected with heads that will seat flush
           to the deck, eliminating potential for contact and abrasion with the panel, and telegraphing.

      D.   Conceal fasteners and expansion provisions where possible in exposed work and locate to
           minimize possibility of leakage. Cover and seal fasteners and anchors as required for a tight
           installation.


3.5        VM ZINC® SHEET METAL ROOFING INSTALLATION

      A.   General: Install , roll-formed sheet metal in compliance with industry best standards and
           Umicore Building Products USA’s published recommendations or whichever is more stringent.
           Provide sheet metal roofing of full length from eave to ridge unless otherwise restricted by
           shipping limitations.

      B.   Standing-Seam Sheet Metal Roofing: Fasten sheet metal roofing to supports with concealed
           clips at each standing-seam joint at location, spacing, and with fasteners in compliance with
           industry best standards and Umicore Building Products USA’s published installation
           information or whichever is more stringent.

           1.    Install clips to supports with self-drilling fasteners.
           2.    Install pressure plates at locations indicated in Umicore Building Products USA’s
                 published installation instructions.
           3.    Seamed Joint: Crimp standing seams with manufacturer-approved tools so cleat, sheet
                 metal roofing, and field-applied seam sealer are completely engaged.



3.6        UL RATED WIND-UPLIFT ASSEMBLIES (Specifier shall verify that product and assemblies
           are listed in UL's current "Roofing Materials & Systems Directory.")

      A.   Warm Roof 1, Uplift Resistance – 105 psf
           1.  Deck: Steel, min 20 MSG, max 22 MSG
           2.  Barrier Board (optional): 1/4 in. thick G-P Gypsum Dens Deck®, loose laid
           3.  Underlayment: Any UL Classified self-adhering modified bitumen membrane, min.
               3-1/2 in. sidelap.
           4.  Insulation: Any UL Classified EPS insulation, loose laid, any thickness.
           5.  Insulation: Any rigid mineral wool fiberboard (not UL Classified), loose laid, any
               thickness, Minimum compressive strength 14 PSI as per ASTM C 165.
           6.  Underlayment: “VM ZINC® ROOFSHIELD®” (not UL Classified), min. 6 in. sidelap,
           7.  Roof Deck Fasteners (Panel Clips): “VM ZINC® DLSS One Hole Sliding Clip”,

3.7        CLEANING AND PROTECTION

      A.   Clean exposed metal surfaces of dirt and debris with warm water (no high pressure) and gently
           rubbing the panels in the same direction as the grain of the zinc using a clean cotton cloth.

      B.   Clean and neutralize flux materials. Clean off excess solder.

  C.    Remove protective films within 90 days of installation. On completion of sheet metal roofing
        installation, clean finished surfaces, including removing unused fasteners, metal filings, rivet
        stems, and pieces of flashing. Maintain in a clean condition during construction.
