God Is Good!
Since the May newsletter, the Diocese of Joliet has been blessed with the good news of
the appointment of a new Bishop and the ordination of a new Priest.
Serrans join the whole diocese in welcoming Bishop Daniel Conlon and pledge our total
support to his pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Joliet. We are excitedly anticipating his
installation on Thursday, July 14, 2011.
Father Steven Dominic Borello was ordained to the holy priesthood of Jesus Christ by
Bishop Joseph Siegel on June 4, 2011. Father Steven’s home parish is St. James the Apostle in
Glen Ellyn and his first assignment will be at Notre Dame Parish in Clarendon Hills. Serrans
share in the joy and thanksgiving that Father Steven and his parents, John and Penny, are
We also pray the prayer from Father Steven’s ordination card:
“Therefore, our prayer for priests should be unceasing.
May it please the Lord to keep them in His hands
and help them so that they may help us. Amen.”

The President’s Corner by Ed Graham
I cordially invite all of you who are reading this newsletter to join us on Monday, June
13, as Bishop Joseph Siegel will install our new officers and trustees and formally induct new
members into the Serra Club of DuPage County. I promise you a very enjoyable evening.
Please see details below and at the Serra Club Calendar.
Sadly, I announce that Fr. Matthew Pratscher, Visitation Parish, Elmhurst, will no longer
be able to serve as the Chaplin for the Serra Club of DuPage County. His new parish assignment
will be too far away to allow him to conveniently attend our monthly meetings. Fr. Matt has
served the club for two years and his priestly joy and enthusiasm will be missed but fondly
remembered by all Serrans. His homilies at our monthly Masses were special gifts to all of us.
May you find even greater love, Fr. Matt, in your new parish than you found at Visitation
and with the Serrans.

Bishop Joseph Siegel to Join Serra on June13th

Non-Serra Club members are invited to attend this special event.

The Class of 2011: Survey of Ordinands to the Priesthood
The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), Georgetown University,
recently released a report presenting their findings from a national survey of ordinands to the
priesthood in 2011. Average age of ordinands is 34; almost one-third were born outside the
U.S.; 47% attended a Catholic elementary school… Interesting reading in just a couple of pages.

High School Graduation Gift
High School Graduations are just around the corner and many people are thinking about
graduation gifts. This is a great time to share the beauty of our Catholic Faith and College
Connection for Catholics offers a way to do this at no cost.
       Serra International’s new website – - allows a
person to print out a personalized campus ministry packet of the graduate's selected college.
The system can also forward the graduate’s contact info to the campus ministry
program if requested. This Campus Ministry Packet makes a great addition to a card or a gift.
This gift to a loved one can serve as a conversation starter for sharing the importance of
keeping connected to our beautiful Catholic faith.

Vocation Prayer Calendar
Are you familiar with the Vocation Prayer Calendar (VPC) in the Diocese of Joliet? Did
you know that Sr. Audrey Marie Rothweil, FCJM (Wheaton Franciscans) planted the seed for the
calendar? Sister is an honorary and very active member of the Serra Club of DuPage County.
Four years ago, she shared an idea she heard about that involved praying for the
seminarians of a diocese. After some discussion within the Serra Club and with the cooperation
of the Joliet Area Vocation Association (JAVA) and Nora Labanauskas of the Diocese of Joliet
Vocation Office, it was decided that a calendar would be published that named and
remembered not only those men and women in religious formation, but also the priests,
sisters, brothers and deacons who are currently serving in the diocese.
The decisions were made to publish the calendar three times per year, each edition
covering four months; and the names of each person in formation plus those of each priest,
sister, brother and deacon would appear at least once per year. (The date on which their name
appears is random and has no significance.) The VPC is sent to the parishes and interested
individuals in WORD or PDF via email.
Now in its fourth year of publication, the calendar has a loyal following around the
diocese. Parishes use the Vocation Prayer Calendar in a variety of ways: some print and
distribute it in the literature racks in their narthex; some include the names in the Prayers of
the Faithful at Mass on that day; others use the calendar in their school classrooms when
praying for vocations; others print the names and dates in the weekly bulletins.
The Serra Club assumes the responsibility for creating each edition of the VPC but has
the cooperation and support of many, especially Nora Labanauskas of the Vocation Office.
Is your parish using the Vocation Prayer Calendar? These men and women deserve
and need our prayers.

World Youth Day – Madrid, Spain – Seminarians
Fr. Burke Masters, Director of Vocations, is raising money to send our seminarians to
World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain for two weeks in August. They will join a delegation of 132
young people from the Diocese of Joliet. The expected one million young Catholics from
around the world will experience the Universal Church at its finest by celebrating faith and
fraternity in Jesus Christ in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI, the Vicar of Christ on earth. This
type of experience is unforgettable in the lives of young people.
The cost per seminarian for the trip is $4000. If you would like to make a donation to
support this pilgrimage, please make your check payable to and send to:

                                              YEAR of the EUCHARIST
                                             April 1, 2010 – June 26, 2011

When did you last attend Eucharistic Adoration?
Do you ever stop by church and visit our Lord in the tabernacle?

To be here before you, Lord, that’s all.
            To shut the eyes of my body, to shut the eyes of my soul and be still and silent;
to expose myself to you who are here, exposed to me.
To be here before you, the Eternal Presence. Michael Quoist

The Serra Club of DuPage County was founded in 1958 and is part of Serra International, recognized by the Holy See as the
global lay apostolate for vocations in the Catholic Church.
Our objectives are: to foster and promote vocations to the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church as a particular vocation
to service; to support priests in their sacred ministry; to encourage and affirm vocations to the consecrated religious life in the
Catholic Church; and to assist its members in their own lives to recognize and respond to God’s call to holiness in Jesus Christ,
through the Holy Spirit.
We carry out our objectives in the Diocese of Joliet through a variety of programs including: the Diocesan Annual Seminarian
Send-off, Adopt-a-Priest Pin Program, Vocation Prayer Calendar, annual diocesan Seminarian Poster, and Picture Yourself as a
Priest Program. The Serra Club also provides support to the Vocation Office as requested.
The Serra News is distributed monthly by the Serra Club of DuPage County.
