As the second man didn´t know what colour his hat was, he had to see the white hat in front of him. If he saw the black hat in front of him, he would have known that he had on the white hat. The first man had to wait for the second man´s reaction (answer). The testament isn´t defined unambiguously, because it counted only with two possibilities (one boy, or one girl). We either speculate that the man wanted that: 1. the boy got twice as big share from the inheritance as the mother and the girl two times smaller share than the mother 2. the mother got 1 third of the share and the remaining 2 thirds are to be divided between the boy and the girl in 4:1 proportion. A. Two boys were born: 1/ each of the boys must get twice as big share as the mother. It´s necessary to divide the inheritance for mother:son:son in 1:2:2 proportion. Each son gets 2 fifths of the share, the mother 1 fifth. 2/ the mother gets 1 third of the share, each son 1 third. B. Two girls were born: 1/ each girl must get two times smaller share than the mother. It is necessary to divide the inheritance for mother:daughter:daughter in 2:1:1 proportion. Each daughter gets 1 fourth of the share, the mother 1 half. 2/ the mother gets 1 third of the share, each daughter 1 third. C. A boy and a girl were born: 1/ each girl must get two times smaller share than the mother, the son two times bigger share than the mother. The inheritance is necessary to be divided in the proportion mother:daughter:son = 2:4:1, that means into 7 parts. The mother gets 2 sevenths of the share, the son 4 sevenths and the daughter 1 seventh. 2/ the mother gets 1 third of the share, the remaining 2 thirds must be divided in the proportion 4:1 (boy:girl), that means into 5 parts. Two thirds divided into five parts = 2 fifteenths. The boy gets 8 fifteenths, the girl 2 fifteenths, the mother 5 fifteenths = one third.
Two claim that David is a liar, but both of them can´t lie, because only one of these three men lies. David is the liar. When the cars meet, their distance from Prague (or from Brno) will be the same. The honest man or the liar can´t say: „I´m the liar,“ because the honest man can´t lie that he is the liar (he´s really the honest man). The liar must lie as well and he would have to say that he is the honest man. That´s why „B“ lied, when he said that „A“ had said that he was the liar. So, „B“ is the liar. „C“ said the truth and he is the honest man. What is „A“, can´t be concluded. Let´s suppose that „A“ is a liar. Then, the mentioned statement isn´t true, because neither the fact that „A“ is the liar, nor that „B“ is the honest man, is true. As the first possibility isn´t valid, the second one - that „B“ is the honest man - must be accepted. Both of them are honest men. „A“ must be the liar, because if he was the honest man, then it would be truth that all three of them are liars - „A“ would be the liar, too. If „A“ was the honest man, he would have to be the liar, what is impossible. Therefore, „A“ is the liar. His statement is untrue, in fact, there is - at least - one honest man among them. Now, let´s suppose that „B“ is the liar. Then both „A“ and „B“ would be liars, so „C“ would be the honest man. That would mean that there is one honest man among them, so the statement of „B“ would be true. But the liar can´t tell the true statements, that´s why „B“ must be the honest man. „C“ is the liar.
