Our “Share a Heart” Families F
or the tenth year, the Ronald McDonald House® “Share a Heart” Campaign was held in January and February at McDonald’s Restaurants and several other locations in the Ozarks. For 21 days, local citizens were encouraged to adopt a heart by contributing $1 to our Ronald House®. Each of our 60+ “Share a Heart” locations featured one local family who has benefited from the wonderful services of the Ronald McDonald House. You’ll meet four of these families within this article, and more special folks as you look at the last several pages of this newsletter. We extend our warmest appreciation to these families for sharing their Ronald McDonald House stories with all of us. Our volunteers, contributors, board of directors and staff are honored to have the opportunity to lend a helping hand.

“On June 18th 2002 our triplet boys were born. Mason, Auston & Bryson were born at 11:29 a.m. They weighed 3 pounds 14 ounces, 3 pounds 7 ounces & 3 pounds 11 ounces. All three were healthy and doing well. They were 9 1/2 weeks early, so we knew they would have to stay in the hospital for awhile. We live in Dora, Missouri, which is about 100 miles southeast of Springfield. Without the help and hospitality of the Ronald McDonald House we would not have been able to stay in Springfield with our boys for the 32 days they were in the hospital. We don’t know how we would have done it without all the help and support of everyone at the Ronald McDonald House. We would like to thank everyone again for all the help, prayers and support.” - Rick & Alicia Luna

The staff is exceptional and wonderfully caring. They made sure our every need was met and were truly concerned about the boys. We will always be thankful and indebted to the Ronald McDonald House. even though he weighed only 1 pound and 9 ounces. Isaac was in the hospital for 17 weeks, and for those 17 weeks we were fortunate enough to be staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield. Even though we live in Republic, there were several critical times that we needed to be by our son’s side right away. Not only did the Ronald McDonald House provide the convenience of being close; it also provided a nice comfortable place for us to stay. They made sure that we felt welcome and provided us a meal if needed. We count our blessings everyday: our son filling us with joy, and all the wonderful caring people that helped us along the way. We will never forget the hospitality of the Ronald McDonald House.” - Mike, Annie, and Isaac Deken

“As a teacher, my school saved pop tabs for the Ronald House, but I never thought that I would need to stay at one. However, my husband and I did stay while our son, Austin, was in Cox South. Austin was born 15 weeks early and remained in the hospital until the day before his due date. Because we adopted him, we were only able to spend 6 of the 15 weeks with him. Since we were commuting from Kansas City to Springfield, we were fortunate to have a place to call home. This was a blessing since we spent our time alone. The convenience to the hospital was important. Staying at the Ronald House allowed us to spend more time with our son. The staff is very understanding to the needs of the families who stay there. The Ronald McDonald House had all the accommodations of home. Some of the amenities include laundry facilities, a kitchen, dinner almost every night, and more. Not many people know what it is like to be alone in a situation like this, so having other families to talk at dinner really made us feel like we were a part of a family. enator Kit Bond announced on Valentine’s Day that he had secured $254 million — a record amount of funds — for a variety of important Missouri projects in this year’s Omnibus Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2003. Among these projects is the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile of the Ozarks, also known as “The Tooth Truck™”. Members of the RMHC® and Tooth Truck Boards of Directors, our volunteers and staff were honored to attend a special press conference on March 1 at the new Jordan Valley Community Health Center, where Senator Bond was a special guest. The event featured news about the funding secured for both the Jordan Valley Dental Clinic and The Tooth Truck. Tours of both facilities were held. We join the Jordan Valley Dental Clinic in expressing our sincere gratitude for Senator Bond’s assistance in building access to dental
treatment for Ozarks’ children who need our help.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children in the Ozarks. Our first priority is to provide a place for families to stay when their child is in a hospital far from home. Since 1988 our cornerstone project, the Ronald McDonald House, has embraced over 5,000 families during a time of unspeakable hardship. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, fondly known as “The Tooth Truck”, provides dental treatment and prevention education for at risk children, primarily in school-based settings. A joint project between RMHC of the Ozarks and The Tooth Truck, Inc., the program has provided over 2,600 dental appointments for 923 children during its first nine months of operation. Our Grantmaking Program, founded in 1996, provides funding for projects that give children a safe and secure environment, help abused and neglected children, and address the health care needs of children. Since the program’s inception, 75 grants have been awarded, totaling $499,728. Since August 2001, the Ronald McDonald House staff and volunteers have proudly worked in partnership with the “Families for Children” program of the Council of Churches to provide the “Kids Clothes Closet” for foster children. Located on the lower level of the Ronald McDonald House, the project has provided clothing for over 500 foster children during 789 visits.

House Volunteer Opportunities
O
ur Ronald McDonald House volunteers help with the day to day operations of our House. They register new families, give House tours, prepare bedrooms for new families, answer the telephone, help with mailings, and clean, clean, clean! But those are just the duties to perform when a family doesn’t need someone just to listen. Our volunteers are the friendly faces that weary moms and dads see when they walk through our doors. The simplest of acts of love and kindness are the best and most important gifts our volunteers give. Each time a volunteer steps through our door they are making a difference in our families’ lives. The loving care of an RMH volunteer truly makes our House a “home away from home” for our families. Would you like to make a difference in the lives of familes and children in the Ozarks? Please contact
Stacy Baker at 875.3501 or by e-mail at StacyRMHC@aol.com for more information about volunteering.
