Returning Students 2010-2011

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
                                                                     – Margaret Mead

July 2010

Dear Students,

As the new school year is about to begin we wanted to welcome you back to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health
(DLSPH) and we hope that you are having a wonderful summer! This package has been prepared to provide you
with information regarding the Masters of Public Health Global Health Concentration (MPH-GHC) for this
upcoming year.

Welcome Potluck Dinner
We would like to invite you to join incoming MPH Global Health Concentration students and students in the
Collaborative Doctoral Program in Global Health for a Welcome Potluck Dinner on Sunday, September 19 at 6 pm.
The potluck will be at the home of Professor Donald Cole, 53B High Park Blvd (High Park Blvd and Roncesvalles
Ave). Please RSVP using the Information Request Form included in this package.

Global Health Course Offerings
Please find in this package a listing of global health courses being offered during Fall 2010 and Winter 2011
semesters. Please note that if you are interested in taking any courses offered outside the DLSPH that you will need
to contact the relevant department directly to determine availability and the registration procedure. Just a reminder
that many of these courses have limited enrolment, so we would encourage you register as soon as possible.

Practicum Placements
It is not too soon to begin to think about practicum placements if you are planning on completing any during this
academic year. Please remember that since there is no funding for international placements offered from the DLSPH
you will be required to find individual funding through individual applications or fund the travel and expenses
yourselves. A list of potential funding opportunities is in development and will be available in September from the
MPH-GHC Blackboard Page and the Centre for International Health website (www.cih.utoronto.ca). Please note
that we do not require you to go overseas – each discipline has options for working with international organizations
in Canada.

MPH–GHC Blackboard Page
The MPH-GHC now has a page as part of the University of Toronto’s online portal (https://portal.utoronto.ca).
Blackboard will provide the opportunities for students and faculty to communicate with each other and be informed
of events and news. In order to access the Blackboard page please include your UTORid on the Information Request
Form included in this package.
                                                                              Masters in Public Health
                                                              Global Health Concentration (MPH-GHC)

Mentorship Program
This year the MPH-CHC will offer opportunities for students to be matched with faculty, alumni or PhD students
who share similar interests with you. If you are interested in participating, and haven't already been contacted about
your interests, please fill out the Mentorship Program section on the Information Request Form included in this package.

Centre for International Health (CIH)
The Centre for International Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health collaborates with most University of
Toronto (UofT) faculties [centres and programs] on global health initiatives in education and outreach. The
CIH-DLSPH is a focal point for the staggering number of UofT global health enthusiasts, which include research
scientists, educators, students to share their commitment to understanding and advancing the world's most urgent
global health issues.

The CIH creates and collaborates on education and outreach events (conferences, symposia, lectures)
encouraging multidisciplinary approaches and contribution. For example, the CIH Annual Global Health Conference
is committed to a convergence of disciplines and has since 2002 included intersecting global health themes related
to medicine (ie. infectious diseases, mental health) law, education, the arts and most recently ethics & social
responsibility. The CIH Retrospective is a collective of global health initiatives across the university community and
can be found on the CIH website (www.cih.utoronto.ca) by clicking on the Retrospective 2009 book located on the
left-hand side of the page.

The CIH HIV/AIDS Initiative-Africa's goal is to "increase the educational, research and service capacity of public
universities in sub-Saharan Africa through long-term partnerships with the University of Toronto that directly and
indirectly halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. Partnerships included are with Moi University, Kenya
and University of Namibia.

The CIH also maintains a listserve which provides information about CIH events as well as global health events that
are taking place across the university community. As part of the MPH-GHC you have been added to the CIH’s
listserve. Judy Kopelow, Director, Strategic Initiatives for the CIH would be pleased to meet with at anytime to
further discuss the many University of Toronto global health opportunities and initiatives. (j.kopelow@utoronto.ca

                                                                    Global Health Concentration (MPH-GHC)

Graduate Student Alliance for Global Health (GSAGH)
The GSAGH, an interdisciplinary forum, led by the Centre for International Health, was initiated for University of
Toronto graduate students to come together and share knowledge. The group’s mission is to engage students with a
shared passion for global health and provide a place where students can discuss their research, experiences and les-
sons learned and potentially develop into tomorrow’s global health leaders. The objectives of GSAGH include: to
foster discussion of topics of interest between groups and provide students with opportunities for interdisciplinary
collaboration and networking; to help students develop as researchers by determining what skills students need and
devising strategies to address these; and to mobilize the student community working in global health and build fu-
ture leaders in this field.

The group organizes a number of events including symposia, which provide opportunities to present on their re-
search and field experience to other graduate students in other disciplines who are interested in global health. As
part of the MPH Global Health Concentration you have been added to the GSAGH mailing list and will find out
about upcoming events and other opportunities to get involved. For more information about GSAGH, please visit
the GSAGH tab on the CIH website: www.cih.utoronto.ca

Please contact elayna.fremes@utoronto.ca for any questions regarding the information in this package.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing you in September.

“I still have, and I always will I think, a nearly uncontainable rage about what hap-
pened in Rwanda, in Somalia and in many other parts of the world and about what's
happening now in many parts of the world. To see mothers and fathers and children
dying of indifference, dying of neglect, of abuse, of somebody's political calculation,
that that doesn't matter. It fills me first of all with just profound sorrow that they have
to live that and die it. And then it fills me with rage, frankly.”
“And the question then is what do you do? What do you do with that? “We are respon-
sible for our lives and for our world. And if we don't engage that responsibility, no one
else will and we will live or die with a legacy of our failures.”

                                                                     – James Orbinski
