Anyone Want To Go To San Francisco?
I would like to start by wishing everyone an extremely happy and
joyous holiday season. We have had a fast and a very interesting year. With
the economy tanking, new president coming on board, it is still nice to see all of
the familiar faces each month at the Mac meeting. I trust next year will bring many
happy and wonderful experiences for all of us.
Every year at this time many of us are making the decision for the annual trek to Mac World
in San Francisco. There are several of our members that have already committed on going this year. I
wonder what Steve Jobs will come forward with this year to keep Apple moving forward. I wonder what
is the new electronic toy or what upgrades are going to be available on the current models. If anyone wants
to have a real Mac high, give me a call and we can set you up with a very reasonable room rate right at Fish-
 erman’s Wharf.
Don’t forget about the annual Christmas Party on Saturday, December 6th. There will be food and drinks
furnished by the club and some deserts and salads have been requested of our members. Be sure and remem-
ber our white elephant gift exchange The gift that you bring should be computer related. Time to clean out
some of your goodies you have sitting in the closet or in your desk drawers.
To encourage people to attend, we have three great prizes that we will have for door prizes. We will have
two iPod Nano’s and one 16GB iPod Touch for the drawing. All current active members will receive one
ticket for the drawing. You have to be present to win. Come and take your chance on winning. 
Buy a NEW Mac, New 3G iPhone, or iPod. Life is short.
                                                         Have a great holiday.
                                                                                 Regards,
                                                                                       Ken Borgh

Freshly Squeezed Reviews: From Dentistry Comes Music
Christmas shopping. People screaming at other shoppers in the parking lot. Moms smacking their kids
in the Food Court. Aah, good times.
So you’ve made your holiday list and some one’s getting an iPhone or iPod. They’ll be overjoyed. Until
they try to use those ear bugs (sorry, buds). The initial excitement quickly wains as they repeatedly pop out.
And then once you’ve duct taped them to the recipients head, well ...
Think about it. You’ve just spent several hundred clams for one of the top music mobile devices for its
excellent sound reproduction, yet have given the recipient a pair of $29.00 phones.
You should have completed the experience and went the whole nine yards and purchased a pair of
Atrios canal phones from Future Sonic.
        THE JUICE
Future sonic traces its root back over two decades ago, when founder Marty Garcia was asked by Todd
Rundgren asked him to ‘put the sound in my head.’ Mr. Garcia experimented with some gel-based dental
adhesive and that was the beginning that has brought to us the Atrios. Used for seemingly ages by profes-
sionals on stage, now you can purchase them in colors and with various accessories.
They come equipped with what look like small umbrellas but are actually formed that way to prevent
any external noise from intruding on your experience. They also come with large and small expandable
foam sleeves. Simply slip them on the sound tube, squeeze them so you can place them in your ear, where
they will expand to also prevent any external noise.
One of the accessories is getting custom molded earpieces to fit perfectly in your ear, like the pros do.
Your Atrios ear canals also come with an upscale carrying case, so not as to lose them or the accessories.
        THE PULP
The price may seem high but many audiophiles have compared these against units several times their
cost. In the end, they preferred the Atrios. And 10Hz - 20,000 Hz. ‘Nuff said.
I tried them with my iTunes and iPhone, rock, classical, jazz, TV programs, et al. The clarity was very
good. But what was truly the amazing bit is how full the bass response is.
       THE RIND
The only negative I actually found was that I need to have my ears cleaned.
        SUMMARY
I stopped listening to music through my system a long time ago. That’s because of finances. Now, what
costs less - a pair of tower speakers or a pair of Atrios. That’s right. And the Atrios can come along with
    me.

The Print Shop for Mac Version 2
The venerable The Print Shop for Mac Version 2 from Software MacKiev was the recipient of the
Best of Show at Macworld 2005 Boston. It is so versatile and powerful that it hasn’t needed an
upgrade so far, and I’m happy to upgrade to this version. This one is a Universal Binary for both
PowerPC and Intel Macs. I have been using The Print Shop Version 1 for a long time and it is
superb for tasks that other apps cannot measure up to because of the way it integrates with Mac-
 specific apps.

Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac Essential Training by Ted LoCascio
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac was a welcome arrival for all Mac users. Beginners
in photo editing who wish for a more robust application than iPhoto will love Elements 6, which
has clear and easy explanations compared to its granddaddy Adobe Photoshop CS4, while still
containing 80% (my guess) of the power.
Watching Lynda.com’s video tutorial of Photoshop Elements 6 is like having a teacher 24/7
next to you helping you ‘see’ rather than ‘read’ the power of this application. I used the online training video
version. With my Cable connection, I had no trouble viewing the tutorial with no noticeable slowdown.

Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac — The Missing Manual
Let’s start with the illustrations. In November 2004 I reviewed the Visual Quickstart manual
on PSE 2 (Peachpit Press; ISBN: 0-201-79974-X), and griped that its photographic illustrations
were all but useless because, as I wrote, “Despite the ‘visual’ part of its title, the screenshots of
various ‘before and after’ photograph conditions are extremely indistinct. Because they are quite
small, and in black-and-white on non-glossy paper, much (if not most) of the detail attempting to
be shown is either difficult to see or completely lost. Even some of the color-plates do not adequately illus-
trate the concept being examined.” Fast-forward to this Missing Manual, and the story changes dramatically.
Virtually all of the illustrations are in full color, most are generously sized and sufficiently distinct to clearly
make their point, and are distributed throughout the book to accompany the related text.

                            Myvu Crystal Video Goggles
                                      reviewed by Maria O. Arguello - <arguello10@comcast.net>

I was very eager to try Myvu video eyewear with the new cable ($24.95) adapter designed just for my
iPhone. I always wanted to try one of these video goggles. It was really simple to assemble; I begin
watching a video from my iPhone in no time. This very-high-tech accessory is a great idea for viewing video
from an iPod or iPhone player in privacy. I hoped it would be ideally suited for viewing a movie on an air-
plane; it would be comfortable and private. But I was very disappointed. The glasses would not stay on very
comfortably and the video resolution was fuzzy unless I held them with one hand in a particular position.
This was most tiring after awhile.
It seems my face and my ears are not suited for this standard type of eyewear. They are gorgeously
designed, but they are not for me. Even the ear buds did not fit although they come with three different-size
tips to fit many people. This is not the fault of the designer but the fault of my ears. I cannot use the standard
earbuds that come with the iPods and the iPhone either. I always have to buy over-the-ear earphones. I also
wear contacts and have a little astigmatism in one eye. Myvu cannot be used with eyeglasses.
Myvu uses patented technology which is very advanced, which they call SolidOptex. VGA resolution
(640 x 480) offers DVD-quality experience and claims that their Kopin Cyber Display technology has the
highest pixel density and sharpest resolution for its size. It provides 4 hours of viewing on one charge. You
can use the eyewear with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and any iPod that supports video, as well as a Zune, Nokia
phones with video-out, digital media and DVD players, cam-
corders, game systems with composite video-out such as
 Wii, Xbox, PSP and more.
Nevertheless, in my opinion, you need to have
perfect vision, be lying down in bed, and be very still to
view a movie with Myvu video eyewear.
