					TRANSPORTATION TECHNICIAN SENIOR, MAINTENANCE CLASS PURPOSE To provide leadwork and perform moderately complex technical maintenance work in one or more of the following areas: (A) roadway maintenance, (B) traffic service maintenance, and (C) roadside vegetation maintenance; perform related work. GENERAL INFORMATION Incumbents are required to work in all weather conditions, under hazardous conditions on obstructed roads and congested highways, in considerable noise, around operating equipment and with hazardous materials. Frequent travel to and from work site with some overnight stay is required. Some positions require maintaining a residence within 30 minutes from their work station. Some positions require incumbents to work with chemicals and toxic materials; incumbents will be required to undergo periodic biologic testing and pass medical tests while employed in these positions. These positions involve strenuous physical work, mostly outdoors. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Leadwork/general activities. These activities apply to areas A through C describe below. Typical responsibilities: organizes crews with appropriate equipment and materials, schedules and assigns work and provides instruction and training on equipment operation and a variety of tasks; evaluates work and provides input into performance appraisals; schedules and arranges on-the-job training programs; conducts safety meetings; assures compliance with OSHA and safety requirements; inspects completed projects and assures compliance with standards and specifications; may serve as supervisor during absence of foreman; coordinates project activities with utility companies, property owners, contractors and law enforcement agencies; uses highway plans and specifications, maps and aerial photographs for maintenance activities such as constructing turnouts, pipe installations, locations and locating signs; computes, checks and verifies quantities, materials and costs; orders supplies; prepares job orders and payroll and activity reports; prepares and maintains supply, equipment and cost records. A. Roadway maintenance. Typical responsibilities: directs, instructs, and performs maintenance activities such as patching, sealing, sweeping and snow and ice removal, ditch cleaning, asphalt plant operations, emergency traffic control and installing and repairing guardrail, culverts and fences; operat
