MUSEUM TECHNICIAN CLASS PURPOSE To lay out and construct museum exhibits; restore and preserve historical objects for display; perform related work. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Exhibit construction. Typical responsibilities: designs, constructs, and paints display cabinets and exhibit structures for use in the museum; maintains existing display cases; selects materials, tools, and equipment to be used in displays; designs and builds cabinets to suit specific displays; restores, remodels, and maintains buildings; prepares historical objects for display by cleaning, repairing, and restoring; preserves longevity of items by applying protective material; makes minor repairs on mechanical objects such as clocks. 2. Maintenance and security. Typical responsibilities: maintains hand tools and power equipment; supervises custodial work and performs minor maintenance on the electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and security systems; maintains building security and opens and closes museum daily. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Considerable knowledge of: cabinet construction and finish carpentry. Good knowledge of: materials used for construction of cabinets and displays; restoration methods. Experience: wallpapering, painting, refinishing surfaces; using table saws, planers, jointers, circular saws, power sanders, welders, drills, grinders, and painting equipment; performing minor maintenance on electrical systems.
