									MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST CLASS PURPOSE To perform standardized clinical laboratory examinations in hematology, microbiology, serology, immunology, and clinical chemistry; to provide consultative services; perform related work. GENERAL INFORMATION Incumbents in these positions are required to work with toxic chemicals, carcinogenic substances and infectious organisms. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Laboratory analyses. Typical responsibilities: obtains blood, urine, stool, tissue, bone marrow, and other biological samples for examination; collects specimens by venipuncture; performs standardized laboratory procedures including urinalysis, hemoglobin, hematocrit, white and red blood cell count/differential, and cell morphology; performs routine calorimetric and complex chemistry procedures such as blood glucose, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, uric acid, and procedures involving reagents, manipulations, and pipeting; stains and prepares specimens and media for microscope, chromosome, and gynecological evaluations; prepares chemical solutions, media and reagents; performs basic research and develops and standardizes chemical, hematological, and microbiological procedures and methods; prepares, calibrates, and maintains standard laboratory equipment and instruments; evaluates validity of sample value based on results of testing quality control materials; prepares laboratory reports; evaluates instrument operational problems; performs routine preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments such as centrifuge, microscope, incubator, analyzer, and spectro
