IT SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER, ASSOCIATE CLASS PURPOSE To develop proficiency in evaluating, installing, maintaining, testing and modifying system software and support systems; perform related work. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the developmental level. At this level incumbents are knowledgeable regarding operating system components, installation procedures, diagnostic tools, and programming techniques. Incumbents work with multiple operating systems and/or platforms to develop technical breadth and understanding of systems integration and increase their technical depth and problem-solving capabilities, working with highly complex operating systems. EXAMPLES OF WORK (may include but is not limited to): Participates in installing, modifying, testing, and maintaining operating system software; evaluates operating efficiency and analyzes performance; analyzes routine operating problems to diagnose and correct problems; communicates problem solutions to vendors, clients, end-users and other IT staff. May provide training to others in using operating system components. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Some knowledge of: system design and procedures; one or more operating system functions, concepts, and capabilities. Experience: programming in one or more computer languages; testing and debugging computer programs and systems.
