									EQUIPMENT OPERATOR, CONSTRUCTION CLASS PURPOSE To operate, maintain and repair gasoline and diesel powered equipment; instruct employees in the use and care of equipment; perform related work. GENERAL INFORMATION Incumbents work in dusty and smoky conditions, logging debris and inclement weather and operate equipment in steep and rocky terrain, near cliffs, in heavily wooded areas, and near low-flying aircraft which may be dropping fire retardant. There is exposure to solvents, diesel fuel, gasoline, and explosives and incumbents perform heavy work such as putting chains on a lowboy, pulling winch lines, and using chainsaws to fall and buck trees. Incumbent may be required to work overtime particularly during fire suppression activities. Incumbents must have physical condition and stamina sufficient to perform construction type work such as lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 90 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing in and around construction type equipment and working in adverse climatic conditions. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Operation. Typical duties: operates at journey level, various construction equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, and front end loaders used for fire suppression, site preparation, road grading, erosion control, and hazard management; to excavate, backfill, grade, and level earth to specifications; builds fire lines; installs ditches, water bars, and culverts; grades surfaces, compacts soils, and rolls ground to exact specifications on flat, rolling, and mountainous/steep terrain; constructs helispots; maintains and replaces bridges; builds roads; installs culverts; loads dump trucks with front-end loader; serves as incident commander/multi-resource leader (initial attack fire boss) assessing f
