Wow – What a story! I never trusted these grocery store pharmacists or even the pharmacists at stores like Wal-mart.
For some reason I always believed that pharmacists that dealt specifically with dispersing drugs like Wal-greens,
Eckerd Drugs, Rite Aid Pharmaceutical, and others would probably be more up to date with what they are doing.
However, the truth is today many businesses and corporations are trying to save money. They are bringing in family
members and friends at an alarming rate and not training them. So these types of errors at pharmacies occur all the
time. We just don’t always hear about them. Many times it’s techs not pharmacists filling your prescriptions.

For those of you who still believe that the pharmaceutical industry is not BIG BUSINESS and is not in cahoots with
doctors then you need to seriously start looking at what is happening around you. When a doctor walk into your room
at an appointment, they only have one goal in mind for you. That goal is to put you on some type of medication. It
doesn’t matter if you are pregnant. Every woman knows that any type of medication can be extremely harmful for
their unborn child but many of us still want to believe everything that a doctor tells us. It’s unfortunate that many
pregnant women and others will probably learn the hard way. The goal is to stay off medications especially if you are
pregnant --either over the counter or prescribed which causes your organs to eventually give out.

Dear MISC Members, the New York Times ran the following editorial on Friday, RE the secret hold placed on the
Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act at the end of last session:

Protecting the Whistle-Blowers
All those Capitol budget hawks searching out waste, fraud and abuse should first find out why some mystery lawmaker killed a long-needed whistle-
blower protection bill in the final hours of the last Congress. The measure would have greatly bolstered Washington’s ability to recoup wasted
multimillions by encouraging government workers to alert superiors to how bad things really are and guaranteeing that they won’t be punished for doing
the right thing.
Both houses unanimously approved versions of whistle-blower protection in the lame-duck Congress in December. But just as the final compromise was
about to pass, the 12-year campaign was snuffed out by a still unknown senator exercising an anonymous hold. The Senate could use its own whistle-
blower right now to let the taxpayers and voters know who is to blame.
Revival of the measure should be a top priority, particularly since the new Senate supposedly will no longer tolerate the skulduggery of secret holds. In
the House, Representative Darrell Issa, the zealous new chairman of government oversight, should be the first to drumbeat for the measure.

Mr. Issa already has his own Web site inviting government workers and the public to send his office tips about abuses. But, so far, it’s more an outlet for
antigovernment ranters than knowledgeable whistle-blowers understandably wary of the reprisals they can suffer.
The measure, which should also be a no-brainer for the Capitol’s new Tea Party ethic, would strengthen the free speech and due process rights of
whistle-blowers. It would allow jury trials
for documenting bureaucratic retaliations and enlarge the covered agencies to include airport baggage screeners, nuclear plant workers and other vital
jobs.
In the lame-duck session, some Republicans warned that the measure might somehow facilitate more of WikiLeaks’s wholesale disclosure of
government business. The issues are unrelated, except on the red-meat talk-radio circuit. And what could possibly be more patriotic, or budget-minded,
than protecting government workers who have the courage and good sense to raise the alarm when taxpayers are being cheated?

Over the weekend NPR’s On the Media ran a segment on Pentagon whistleblower Franz Gayl and the secret hold that was placed on the Whistleblower

Former Special Counsel Victim Impact Statements

Former U.S. Special Counsel Scott Bloch was scheduled to be sentenced last Monday, in response to his alleged mistreatment of employees during his
tenure as Special Counsel. Bloch was notorious for pursuing personal political agendas over his mandate to protect whistleblowers. Just hours before
the hearing, federal prosecutors filed a motion for reconsideration to reduce Bloch’s sentencing from one month jail time to probation. The hearing has
been rescheduled for March 10th at 2:30pm, DC Federal District Court.

Bloch’s sentencing.

4. The deadline is the day of the scheduled sentencing hearing (for now it’s March 10. I will provide updates as we get close.)

DWM to Host Rain Barrel Workshop, Tucker, GA
DECATUR - The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) will host a rain barrel workshop for DeKalb citizens on Saturday
March 12, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Tucker Recreation Center, 4898 Lavista Road in Tucker. Collecting rainwater in rain barrels for use during dry
months is an excellent way to conserve water and reduce water bills. During the workshop, citizens will be instructed on rain barrel maintenance and
water conservation landscaping. The rain barrel workshop is open to the first 30 DeKalb County residents who sign up. This is a “hands on” workshop

where residents will make their own rain barrels with DWM assistance. The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes all the materials to make your

New Panthers, People Go To Court With Irvington Six
On Thursday, February 24th, the New Black Panther Party will stand in solidarity in court with the Irvington Six, referring to the six members of the
Newark AntiViolence Coalition who were wrongly arrested on November 24th when the Irvington police attacked their peaceful, permitted rally to
condemn the shooting death of Saleenah Baines, a member of the Coalition. Baines was shot to death with a companion on Madison and Myrtle Avenue
in Irvington just a few weeks prior. She was pregnant, a single mother, only in her early 20s at the time. The killing unnerved many in the greater
Newark area. New Black Panther Party member, Sharif Amen hotep, a street favorite, was among the arrestees. The Six will have a pretrial conference
to determine the status of readiness of both sides to go to trial. The trial will be a trial by judge. Municipal Judge Tracey Cosby will be presiding. The Six

Jury Selection Begins for Newark Cop On Video, Beating Travis Rattray
On Monday, February 28th, jury selection will begin in the case of Angel Pared, the Newark Police officer caught on videotape brutally beating up
Newark youth Travis Rattray. Rattray, 15 years old at the time of attack last year, suffered head trauma and had some of his dreadlocked hair literally
pulled from his head in the attack. “People should remember that Pared is not the only culprit. He is the main culprit. The tape is clear. Two other
undercovers joined in once Pared beat Travis to the ground. They all should go down,” said Zayid Muhammad.
Muhammad, the Party’s national minister of culture and family spokesman, led the community protest condemning the attack.
“People should also know that Travis has been threatened by other Newark police officers since this incident. So there is a lot to come with this case,”
he finished. The jury selection will take place at 50 West Market St. in Room 1112, Judge Ronald Wiggler’s courtroom at 9a.m.

During the week, we are asking all segments of the community to affirm teachers for the work they do in shaping the future by touching the lives of our
children. Our position is everyone from the President to the bank teller has been molded by a teacher. The Teachers Make It Happen celebration will be
a time for the entire Limuru community to say “thank you” to teachers.

Studies around the world have shown that teachers, who make the greatest impact, are those who are valued by families, communities, and students.
While God has opened this door for me to develop a greater heart of compassion for His people, the exciting part is that you will be able to share in this
compassion and make a great impact in several ways. First, you can help pray for me and my fellow team members. We will need prayers that God will
prepare us for our visit and bless our efforts to minister to these people. We will also need prayers that our financial needs will be met.

Overwhelmed by crack, Old Town asks for help
Neighbors, businesses want return to drug-free zones

Before YOU read the below article in the Thursday, 10 February 2011, PORTLAND (OR) TRIBUNE Newspaper please read the response/reaction of
BlackParentSpeaks.
In response to the OVERWHELMED BY CRACK, OLD TOWN ASKS FOR HELP article, I - BlackParentSpeaks - state emphatically that 'exclusion' of
Blacks in Portland, Oregon's "Old Town" was both racial and racist.
Portland, Oregon has a myriad of 'issues' that need to be addressed. Racism and racial profiling are amongst the most -- if not the most -- pressing. An
ever-growing number of our public schools are chaotic failures due to racism, mismanagement, incompetence, and more. Let's face it, we have
chronically abused and misused the 'others' who we have mentally labeled 'throwaways' of non-importance.
'White' Portland, as a mindset, is dangerous because that mindset most often does not willingly place value on the worth of others who are of differing
mindsets.
The situation in Portland, Oregon's "Old Town" are a reflection of reaping and sowing.... In the final analysis, we will all be valued or we will all perish to
some extent.
All problems have solutions and answers.
'White' Portland created the conditions that are today being played out and witnessed in Portland's "Old Town".... 'No man is an island' and what
happens in one area soon -- or eventually -- affects other areas. The payback for parasitical uninvolvement, for nonactivism, for 'failure to act' are visible
throughout Portland (and Portland is but one mirror of places throughout our nation).
A person's character has lots to do with how he or she treats 'others'. 'Others' include those WRONGLY perceived and labeled as 'throwaways'. All
people have value and we need to advocate for all of our children and provide resources to adults who we KNOW-BY-THEIR DEEDS-AND-ACTIONS
have our children's 'best' interests at heart and can and will get the job done!
Black children, Latino children, Native children, and others, are abused and misused in our public schools daily. For decades, I have consistently
spoken about and written about same. Educational racism, maltreatment, and physical abuse happen throughout our school system. Because we
adults have denied such truths -- because we adults have turned our backs on our children by pretending that such does not occur, we have
allowed WRONGS to continue and expand. The so-called 'undesirables' of Portland's "Old Town" are US -- they are the US that we both created and
abandoned.
I applaud 'white' Commissioner Randy Leonard for visioning and forging the building of a public restroom in "Old Town". All people -- regardless of their
status
or circumstance -- need and deserve access to decent restroom facilities.

Only 12% of Black Boys are on Grade Level! - 'Understanding Black Male
Learning Styles Critical to Academic Success'
NEW YORK, Feb. 21, 2011 -- Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, national education consultant and bestselling author of the newly released Understanding Black Male
Learning Styles, believes that today's classroom is no place for a growing African American boy. Schools have virtually ignored the fact that boys and girls learn
differently and that they mature at different rates. African American male students suffer the most from this neglect. Kunjufu asks, "Have we designed a female
classroom for male students? Are we expecting boys to learn in the same manner as girls?" Since 1985, Kunjufu has advocated for single-gender classrooms and
schools to meet the learning, social, cultural, and emotional needs of Black boys.
The Kunjufu Learning Styles Model
The secret, says Kunjufu, is understanding how they learn. "If teachers teach to students' learning styles, if they create stimulating, culturally relevant learning
environments, our boys will excel in school," he says. Kunjufu estimates that as many as two-thirds of students and an even larger percentage of African American
males are right-brain learners, however, most of the learning activities are oriented toward visual-print learners (left-brain). This has created a disastrous learning
environment for right-brain students, and it must be resolved if Black boys are to improve their classroom performance.

FOR BLACK PEOPLE ONLY – EUROPEAN HOLIDAYS AN EXTREME DETRIMENT TO BLACK PEOPLE

Next Monday February the 14th as we all know is going to be celebrated as Valentine’s Day. I say to myself here we go again with another one of
these European holidays. The thing about it is that a good majority of Black people love these holidays and would go ape shit bananas if they could not
celebrate them anymore. But, if you knew what these holidays are really about and how detrimental they are to us, would you continue to willingly
celebrate them? I know that what I am about to say next is going to piss some of you off but personally I don’t give a rat’s ass. It’s time we Black African
people get serious about getting back to who we were before we were hit in the head and dragged thousands of miles across the sea to be sold on
auction blocks like cattle.
First of all, these European holidays are designed to keep Black people hooked to white supremacy which focuses on physical external things and not
spiritually internal things. All these holidays from New Year’s straight down to Christmas are all materialistic holidays. None of them are focused on
developing the inner person spiritually. It’s all about gimmie gimme gimme get get get. Before one holiday is over, they are hitting you up with the next
holiday in hopes that you will go out and throw away your hard earned dollars on stuff that does not raise your spiritual level. I recall a situation several
years ago in which I went to a post office in a mall to get some stamps a few days before the Christmas holiday and I saw a ton load, a ton load, A TON
LOAD of Black people in the mall running around trying to buy stuff. It blew my mind. There is a saying that whoever you give your energy to is whoever
you give your power to. And you are wondering why Black people are always on the bottom rung of the ladder. We spend more money on these holidays
than any other race and it needs to stop.
Ask yourself this question, did Black people create any of these holidays that are celebrated (leave out Kwanzaa). All of these European holidays
especially, Valentines Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas are based on the pagan festivals that took place
during the Greco-Roman period in celebration of their gods not for the reasons they tell you about today. What happened is that the Roman empire
which is now the Roman Catholic Church incorporated these pagan festivals into its agenda when it was in the process of making up a religion called
Christianity to maintain control of the empire. Let me say that again. THE ROMAN EMPIRE WHICH IS NOW THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
INCORPORATED THESE PAGAN FESTIVALS INTO ITS AGENDA WHEN IT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING UP A RELIGION CALLED
CHRISTIANITY TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE EMPIRE. I know that this is hard to believe but go do your own research and come back and tell me
if I am lying.
In order to stop this krap, those amongst us who know the truth need to start sharing it with those amongst us who do not know the truth. We need to
show them how these holidays are hurting us not helping us. We need to reeducate our adults as well as our children into right knowledge so they can
start focusing on developing their spiritual inner selves which will in turn develop their external outer selves. Now this may be tough for as I said earlier
many of our people love these holidays and will not want to give them up. The best thing to do is drop that seed of knowledge even if the person is
hostile towards you. That seed will germinate in its own time.
In closing, I want to say stay vigilant and be aware. Each one teach one and reach one. You may not get everyone but if one person hears you,
understands you and makes a change, then it will be well worth it the effort. It is time for us to get back to who we are. (Please share this with other
Black people as much as you can. It’s time to wake up.)

The jackals are now out in force, they have renewed their calls for “entitlement reform” ostensibly as their way to reduce and control the catastrophic
fiscal crisis the US is facing. This is a classic psychological warfare trick. On the surface it sounds valid like most cons; the con artists give you a
smidgen of truth to get you to go along with their scheme to fleece you of your assets and money. In this case the con comes in the form of economic
philosophies. After WWII everyone was spoon feed the propaganda of economist John Maynard Keynes who said governments could impact the overall
economy and should do so by spending even if it meant spending more revenue than the government took in. Keynesian economics became the Bible
of Western economic thought for years. The problem with his approach is that it looks at effects not the real causes of economic downturns, recessions
and depressions.
Most modern economists are prostitutes who pander to governments and institutions of higher learning to get their grants, their tenure, recognition
and affirmation from corporatist oligopoly media thereby fattening their wallets and gaining “credibility” and notoriety. They never mention the role of the
international banking elite and multi-national corporations who control and manipulate the stock and commodities markets, who rig Wall Street with
insider deals, massive pump and dump campaigns and Ponzi schemes, who white-mail governments and force them to do their bidding because they
(the banksters ,not the Treasury) control the purse strings and the corporations (not Congress) determine who the US is going to invade and bomb next.
These sociopaths have plotted for years to do away with the New Deal safety net programs and the fiscal crisis gives them cover and an excuse to do
it. We are living in a time when the crooks have totally rigged the game and have brought their house of cards down on the people’s heads. They don’t
teach this in high school or college economics or political science classes. But instead of prosecuting the crooks, arresting the liars and warmongers the
foxes in the hen house are going to impose even more draconian measures on the people. Notice how all the talk about budget reform centers around
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as it they were the only drains on the treasury and our wallets! They never talk about dismantling the war
machine that has been running amuck since WWII!

The US empire is over extended and it is broke. Following the Keynesian model the US expended funds to build highways, fight wars (real and
imagined), engage in social engineering and corporate welfare on a humongous scale. The US was creating debt but on a fairly manageable level. The
military industrial complex was happy because the US leaders had duped the people into believing that Russia a former ally was now their enemy and
posed a serious existential threat. Presidents of both parties fueled the arms race pouring ever more money into the sinkhole of weapons and war. But
at least the taxes were paying for the wars except for Vietnam which ran up huge deficits, so much so the US was forced to default and go off the gold
standard just to pay its bills!
Along come Ronald Reagan with his Trickle Down theory saying cut taxes for the rich and the economy will grow because businesses will have more
money to invest, the economy will expand and the benefits will trickle down to the masses. The problem was Reagan cut taxes but expanded the
government and inflated government spending. He increased spending although he gave the impression (because the US media never challenged his
lies) that his policies would reduce government debt.
Things got so bad under Reagan that when his Vice President became President, George H.W Bu$h was forced to raise taxes “Read my lips, no new
taxes” to reduce the deficits Reagan’s policies caused. The tax increase and the resulting recession was Bu$h’s downfall but he had a plan B in the
wings, Bill Clinton. Clinton ushered in s new era of Democratic fascism and warmongering. Clinton was the surrogate for Wall Street’s criminal agenda
and did everything they told him to do except invade Iraq and occupy Somalia. Under Clinton watch Wall Street was able to gut the Glass-Steagall Act
setting the stage for our current economic meltdown. But because Clinton refused to invade Iraq, the right wing warmongers set him up for
impeachment with the Monica Lewinsky debacle. (His handlers knew he had sexual issues and used it against him).
Then came the village idiot George W Bu$h who gave his Kleptocratic buddies even bigger tax cuts and while expanding government spending with
his imperialistic wars and domestic police state under his bogus War on Terrorism. Cutting taxes and going on a spending binge while allowing all kinds
of corporate rip offs, fraud and Wall Street criminality put us in the spot we are in, not Social Security or Medicare! Oh, I forgot to mention since the late
70's the government was stealing the money in the Social Security Trust Fund to cover shortfalls in revenue.
So here we are on the verge of fiscal default and bankruptcy and all the New World Order’s flunkies can say is bail out Wall Street but cut Social
Security and Medicare. They never talk about cutting corporate welfare, stopping the wars or bringing the troops home. You won’t hear them say
anything about taxing Wall Street to pay down the debt let alone prosecuting them for their criminal behavior. Naw that’s too much like right. I hate to be
the one to break this to you but their goal is to create a global Neo-Feudalist state were we are the new serfs, peons and the deprived. Read the history
about the “Dark Ages” in Europe. This what’s in store for most of the world except they will allow us to buy all the new gadgets and gizmos we can afford
to keep us placated.
This is why people all around the world are in an uproar. They are feeling the squeeze and they don’t like it. Unfortunately the people in the US are so
comatose, prozaced out and dumbed down most will never wake up to the fact a serious con game is being run on them. I listen to libertarian and right
wing radio just to see what they are thinking and planning. These white folks are extremely upset because they realize their white skin privileges are
being whittled away on a daily basis and they see how they are being played by the ruling elites. But most hold out hope they can still vote the rascals
out. It still hasn’t dawned on them the system is rigged against them and they can’t win as its currently constructed.
Black people on the other hand are so out of it we have abdicated our role as the moral compass of this degenerate society, as a result the ship is
floundering. What will it take to right the ship? Revolution anyone?

The Greatest Advocate for Civil Rights was the Black Press

In 1827 a group of black businessmen were fed up with the negative depictions of African-Americans in their local newspapers, so they decided to start
their own. A few months later America's first, 'race' newspaper was born. At the helm were two young black men; 28 year old college graduate John
Russwurm and 32 year old preacher Samuel Cornish. Freedom's Journal, as it was called, made certain every article and editorial had a deliberate
slant that showed blacks in a positive light with dignity and class. Cornish and Russwurm knew they not only had to report the news but they had to
inspire as well. Any news worthy item involving "Africans" was to be included.
"Too long have others spoken for us…." was part of a bold statement written on the first page of every issue. The newspaper was an immediate hit with
African Americans and a shock to the white establishment. A black newspaper contradicted the image of the Negro whom the white press had portrayed
as dense and stupid. Freedom's Journal exposed the ingenuity and intellect of black folks that had long since been suppressed. But Cornish and
Russwurm, who were both the Editors and Publishers, strongly disagreed on the direction the newspaper would take and after only two years,
Freedom's Journal closed its doors.
But little did they know their vision and fortitude had paved the way for 24 other black owned and operated pre Civil War newspapers. Among them was
The North Star.
Published in 1847 by former slave Fredrick Douglass, The North Star was immediately called an abolitionist newspaper; and it was. The self educated
Douglass advocated the end of slavery and published the horrible treatment of slaves and the ungodliness of the institution itself. His fiery speeches and
editorials caught the ears of both black and white abolitionists, as well as members of congress who secretly read his paper. It made Douglass the most
prominent African-American of his day.
After the Civil war, over 500 black newspapers pulled black America back together again. Many of them used the printing presses of nearby churches to
print weekly updates on lost and missing loved ones. Black newspapers were like food to starving children; offering guidance, hope and direction to
millions of newly freed slaves. They became instrumental in their migration north, and created a new sense of pride. The white landowners and
shopkeepers began to lose money to blacks who started their own businesses and others who were moving north in search of better opportunities.

In southern states white newspapers condoned and suppressed the terrorist beatings, lynchings and murders of newly freed blacks by organizations like
the Klu Klux Klan. But a young journalist by the name of Ida B. Wells was determined to get those stories out. Wells traveled the south, sometimes with
two guns beneath her dress, documenting, writing and publishing articles for her newspaper; The Memphis Free Speech. Despite death threats and the
total destruction of her office and printing press, Ida B. Wells became the premier black, female journalist of her era. By the time Robert Abbott and the
Chicago Defender opened its doors the groundwork and foundation had already been laid. Still considered by many to be the greatest black newspaper
of all time, the Chicago Defender included names like Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks and J.A. Rogers among its staff. The defenders popularity
and influence was so vast it's credited with jumpstarting the great migration. Ten thousand blacks left the south each month in search of a better life up
north. Robert Abbott would print everything from job openings waiting for southern blacks when they arrived to train schedules headed to Chicago. It
became so problematic to white southerners that black newspapers were banned throughout most southern states. Paper boys and distributers were
often beaten and arrested for selling black newspapers. But that didn't stop innovators like Abbott who received the help of black porters to literally toss
newspapers from their moving trains to waiting distributers. It was those types of methods and dedication that made the Chicago Defender so popular
and made its publisher, Robert Abbott one of the first black millionaires.
While in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania another maverick businessman, Robert L. Vann sometimes employed white reporters to infiltrate the Klu
Klux Klan to uncover a challenging story. His newspaper, The Pittsburgh Courier, is considered to be the first black national newspaper and solely
credited with bringing millions of blacks over to the Democratic Party. It included columns from W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey and Zora Neale
Hurston. Meanwhile, in California, a reluctant Carlotta Bass made a promise to take over as publisher of the longest running black newspaper in the
west; the California Eagle. From 1912-1951 the determined journalist and activist was the most powerful voice against discrimination, oppression, and
racism on the west coast.
For over a hundred years black newspapers like the Amsterdam News and the New Journal & Guide were counted on to pull black America through
the most difficult times in history. The black press showed white folks pictures of themselves they didn't want anyone to see and shaped the collective
thinking of black folks everywhere. And no matter what city they were located the black press had one goal, spoke with one voice and heralded one
cause; equality. They didn't profess to be neutral or unbiased because they couldn't afford to be. Before the black press came along blacks folks in this
country didn't exist; we were invisible and our lives were lived out in the shadows of white America's fears. Since such obscure beginnings today's black
press have indeed changed. And I wonder; would the black publishers, editors, and journalists of yesterday be proud of what we've done with their
legacy? Would they call us complicit or even petty; running around reporting and sensationalizing obscure gossip disguised as news? Are we ignoring
the opportunity to set the pace and fearlessly push a bold one voice agenda as hard as they did? I don't know. And in the end, all we can do is wonder.

2010 NYC Marijuana Arrest Numbers Released:
50,383 New Yorkers Arrested for Possessing Small Amounts of Marijuana

Marijuana Possession Offenses are #1 Arrest in NYC, Comprise 15% of All Arrests;
Majority of Those Arrested Are Black and Latino Youth

Juvenile Justice and Drug Policy Reform Groups Mobilizing To End Racist, Costly Arrests

NEW YORK -- Recently released figures by the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services show that in 2010, the New York City Police Department
arrested 50,383 people for low-level marijuana offenses. Arrests for low-level marijuana possession offenses are the number one arrest in New York
City, making up 15 percent of all arrests. On average, nearly 140 people are arrested every day for marijuana possession in NYC, making the Big Apple
the “Marijuana Arrest Capital of the World.”
This dramatic rise in marijuana arrests is not the result of increased marijuana use, which peaked nationally around 1980 according to data collected by
the U.S. government. Over the last twenty years, NYPD has quietly made arrests for marijuana their top enforcement priority, without public
acknowledgement or debate. This is the sixth year in a row with an increase in marijuana possession arrests. In 2005, there were 29,752 such arrests,
and in 2010, there were 50,383, a 41 percent increase. Since Michael Bloomberg came into office in 2002, there have been 350,000 arrests for low-level
marijuana offenses in NYC.
“New York has made more marijuana arrests under Bloomberg than any mayor in New York City history,” said Dr. Harry Levine, a Sociology professor
at Queens College and the nation’s leading expert on marijuana arrests. “Bloomberg’s police have arrested more people for marijuana than Mayors
Koch, Dinkins, and Giuliani combined. These arrests cost tens of millions of dollars every year, and introduce tens of thousands of young people into our
broken criminal justice system.”
Most people arrested for marijuana possession offenses are handcuffed, placed in a police car, taken to a police station, fingerprinted and
photographed, held in jail for 24 hours or more and then arraigned before a judge. Almost 70 percent of those arrested are younger than 30 years old. 86
percent of those arrested are Black or Latino, even though research consistently shows that young whites use marijuana at higher rates.
“The NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg are waging a war on young Blacks and Latinos in New York,” said Kyung Ji Rhee, Director of the Institute for
Juvenile Justice Reforms and Alternatives. “These 50,000 arrests for small amounts of marijuana can have devastating consequences for New Yorkers
and their families, including: permanent criminal records, loss of financial aid, possible loss of child custody, loss of public housing and a host of other
collateral damage. It's not a coincidence that the neighborhoods with high marijuana arrests are the same neighborhoods with high stop-and-frisks and
high juvenile arrests."
Few New Yorkers know that over 30 years ago, marijuana possession was decriminalized in New York when a Republican State Senator and a
Democratic State Assemblyperson sponsored the Marijuana Reform Act of 1977. The Legislature found that “arrests, criminal prosecutions and criminal
penalties are inappropriate for people who possess small quantities of marihuana (sic) for personal use.” Possession of 25 grams or less of marijuana
was decriminalized – that is, it was made a violation, with the first offense facing a maximum penalty of a $100 fine, not arrest and jail. Marijuana
burning or “in public view” was made a criminal offense, a misdemeanor.
Most people arrested for marijuana possession were not smoking in public; most simply had a small amount of marijuana in their pocket, purse or bag.
Possessing a small amount of marijuana in one’s pocket or bag is a legal violation, not a criminal offense. But quite often, when police stop and question
a person, they say “empty your pockets” or “open your bag.” Many people comply with the officer’s request. If a person pulls marijuana from their pocket
or bag, it makes the marijuana “open to public view,” a crime. The police then arrest the person for this misdemeanor. In 2009, the NYPD stopped and
questioned over 575,000 people — 84% of them people of color. Over 325,000 of those stops resulted in frisks. Fewer than 12% of those encounters
resulted in a summons or arrest.
This month, the Institute for Juvenile Justice Reforms and Alternatives (IJJRA), and the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) launched a training program called
“Know Your Rights, Build Your Future.” The trainings are being held in every borough every month to educate New Yorkers about their rights and the
law. They are part of a City-wide campaign to end the marijuana arrest crusade and promote more effective policies for our youth.
“The NYPD’s marijuana enforcement practices are racially bias, unjust, and costly,” said Gabriel Sayegh, New York State Director for the Drug Policy
Alliance. “The Mayor can end these arrests immediately by simply ordering Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and the NYPD to follow the legislative intent
of the 1977 decriminalization law. What the Legislature found in 1977 holds true today: arrests for small amounts of marijuana are inappropriate and
wasteful.”
The groups are also calling upon City Council to hold hearings to demand greater accountability from NYPD and learn more about both the fiscal and
human costs resulting from these arrests.

WORPLACE QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Question: I want to share with you some information and this should clear up the issues I spoke to you
about. I will keep it short. I am up late; this is when I do my writing. My issues in regard to racism and
workplace discrimination are one that is not easy to share. Here is a short statement.

I currently live in Des Moines, Iowa and I started work at John Deere Des Works in Ankeny, Iowa in August
30, 2010. I was making $16 an hour and was working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. With that, I was
bringing home around $1,400 a week. I am black and I was working in a department with one other black
person on the first shift. I began training in this department with three other persons who were white, all on first
shift. After our training on first shift, we were all supposed to transfer on the grave yard shift/3rd shift. I was so
good at my job, which was touch-up painter on all of John Deere Sprayer Machines. The job was easy but
demanding and I was very good.

My racial issues began when the Team Leader wanted me to stay on first shift and I took the position of a
white person who was supposed to get that position. The other white guys in that department all painters
made work for me hell. They called me the "N" word. I was cursed at often. When I asked them for

assistance, they would tell me wrong. To make a long story short, the white workers did not want me in that
position. I went to work one day and someone took a sharp object to my car and marked an N in the paint on
my car. I reported this to Iowa Civil Rights Commission. I told them the entire story of what was going on at
John Deere and they informed that a hate crime has happened. Other workers would call me "boy". I would
say, that the company allowed my work place to become a hostile work environment. I reported all these
issues to management even to the CEO of the company. John Deere pays well, that is if you can get your foot
in the door. The other thing is keeping your job. I know of only one black person who worked there for 6 years
and bragged about it. But to use the lack of a better word, what I saw how he was being treated by the same

white worker, no better than me, I would say he was an Uncle Tom. When the white workers went to him, they
called him boy, "N", word, kicked at him, cursed at him, so I see how he managed to keep his job. The old
saying goes, when they told him to jump, it wasn’t how high, he just jumped. I was sad to see that, but I was
not very happy about the way I was treated as well. The name John Deere, people see as a great global good
company. John Deere is not what most people think. I was fired October 29, 2010.

Before I was fired, weeks before, one of the white workers who at that time was on 3rd shift, as he was leaving
for home that morning and I was starting my shift, he came to me and told me that the first shift white painters
were plotting to get rid of me. As he said, they are going to set me up. To put it as he said. "Let's set this
nigga up and get him out of here!"

During my interview and training before I started work on the production floor, I was told that John Deere used
to be an all white company and there are people still working at this location that still do not like blacks and
they warned me I would run into racial problems. I did run into racial problems and I was fired, even after I
reported the racial problems. I have a message for any black person who wants to leave the south for the mid-
west or the north. Research before you move up here. I was born and raised in Oxford, Mississippi and I
faced racism all my Mississippi life in school, on the job such as Wal-Mart as well as the University of
Mississippi. That's why I choose to move north to work for a big company and get ahead and to get away from
racism. I moved to Iowa in 2003 and experienced racism the very first day I came here. Racism is here in
Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois. I lived in all three states. I lived and worked in Davenport, Iowa. I lived in Rock
Island, Illinois. I lived and couldn't even get a job in Nebraska. Blacks needs to understand, in these three
states, if they move here, first of all --any job you try to get will first go to the white person. The next race to get
the job is Hispanic. Hispanics get jobs here because they can communicate with their own. It has nothing to
do with experience or education. If you can speak English and Latin, and work for less money, there is a 100%
chance you will get hired. Blacks need to understand, here, it doesn’t matter if Hispanics or Latinos or
Mexicans are Americans, they just need to come up with a fake ID and work for less money and they will get
hired.

I once tried to get a job at Tyson in Nebraska and with all the manufacturing and production experience I have,
they would not hire me. While I was filling out my application for employment, I was in the room with 10 or 15
Latinos or Hispanics men and women. Later I found out that Tyson was charged and fined for using company
vans to transport and hire Latinos or Hispanics, bring them to Tyson to work. They worked for less money.
And to make matters worse, Tyson hired undocumented workers from temp services and again they paid
Hispanics less money. So, like I said before, blacks need to research states and companies if they are
thinking about moving north.

Blacks are on the move again going back to the southern states. I have an attorney and we are fighting John
Deere. What they did to me is wrong! When they say jump to me, they are talking to the wrong one. Living
here is no joke. It can be very stressful at times. I am trying to make it on unemployment and food stamps and
it is not much.

How many other blacks have a story like mine? A lot of blacks who have good jobs keep to themselves and
don't say anything to white workers on these jobs because they know they will be out of a job or worst. They

just take the harassment day-by-day. I understand blacks need to keep a job like John Deere that pays well,
what can they do? There is no support network for blacks who are out of a job for being mistreated just
because you are a black person. If there is someone out there who can help me, please help me (email:

know.

Answer: Mr. Burton racism and discrimination in the workplace is really rough, however, don’t make excuses for not
excelling in your life because you have experienced racism and discrimination. Many blacks use this as an excuse to get
off track with their lives and for many they never get back on track.

I do like your candid view of how things are progressing with blacks and others in the workplace. I am constantly
inundated with these same types of questions and my answers are always the same. You have an attorney so you seem
to be doing everything that you need to obtain justice. However, hopefully you don’t have one of those attorneys that will
do a 360 degree turn around on you when you go to court. You need to know now that this is a probable outcome for
your case. The goal is not to put all your eggs in one basket. Now is the time for you to educate your own self on what
has happened to you and come up with a “Plan B” and even a “Plan C” in case you do not prevail in your case.

I know things are a little fearful now but remember “action alleviates fear!”. What is your action plan if you lose your case
and your food stamps and unemployment stops? Do you have family or friends in other cities and areas where you can
relocate until you can regroup? Remember you have only 3 choices to make: 1) Get back into the workplace, 2) Go back
to school, or 3) Start your own business.

I know your unemployment isn’t much but you have much more than many families at this stressful time in your life.

Life is hard and I heard everything that you said about moving up north. I have lived in 11 different cities but I don’t think I
could have moved to Iowa. I am sure it was a culture shock for you –just like working and living in El Paso, Texas was for
me. But what you really need to understand is that sometimes and many times this corruption in the workplace is so
entrenched that it will be impossible to obtain justice. So it will be extremely important for you to know when to walk away
and try to restore your life to some sense of normalcy. What is normalcy? Normalcy is when you become a viable and
productive member of society again. I am sure drawing unemployment has left you feeling like you are less than and
probably have even brought on some type of depression that you might not be aware of. Men go through depression just
like women so it’s important for you to try to obtain the proper nutrients and enzymes in your diet to nourish your mind,
body and soul.

Now is the time for you to be a part of some type of workout program; community or church group that can give you
support. Also contact the NAACP.org, ACLU.org, etc. about possible hate crimes against you. The last thing you want to
do right now is to isolate yourself.

Remember that a temporary defeat is not a permanent failure. You need to understand what has happened to you don’t
define who you are as an individual and that you have a lot to offer the world. Sometimes these curve balls occur in our
lives in order to put us on the right track. Many times we beat and beat on doors that don’t open for us and many times
it’s because there is nothing for us on the other side of that door. It doesn’t mean that you should never knock on that
door again –it just means that there is nothing for you at that particular time.

Remember everything will happen in your life in divine order as long as you stay positive, proactive and keep moving
forward.

With this fallen economy, you also need to realize that now more so than ever there are tons of opportunities out here. So
do your research and figure out what you need to do to create the type of life that you deserve.

We will do what we can to help you get your story out all over the country. There are many media entities that read our e-

will add John Deere and Tyson to the list. We need several African Americans from these companies coming together to
file class-action lawsuits. You don’t have to live in the same city to join these national class-action lawsuits. But
remember 8 out of 10 discrimination complainants never file lawsuits against the workplace because it’s too painful. Many
people rather forget than remember what happened.

One of the biggest myths out there is that corporations have great paying jobs and these jobs will secure your financial
future. However, your story alone should really cause people to wake up and see what is really happening in this country.
As far as being treated the way you were treated –you need to understand that families and friends especially those at
John Deere are looking out and taking care of each other right now. It’s only some of us that haven’t realized that yet.

Corporate America is now a world of mergers, downsizing, and outsourcing. And for those who survive and remain
employed, the corporate workplace itself is often unfriendly and difficult, as employees struggle to do more with fewer
resources, deal with cutthroat office politics, racism and discrimination, and work longer hours to produce a product of
which they may or may not be proud of. Further, all the while they are filling someone else’s dream or bank account. A
good alternative to Corporate America is small businesses, which are the driving force of our economy --and these
businesses should be a viable option for African Americans.

You addressed yourself really well in your initial email to me. I would say you are pretty good at putting words on paper so
maybe you need to think about getting involved in some type of business that deals with writing. You can fill out my Adult
