JOB DESCRIPTION Position: Sales Training Director Reports to: VP, Sales Job Location: Cambridge, MA THE COMPANY Targanta Therapeutics Corporation is a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing innovative antibiotics to treat serious infections in the hospital and other institutional settings. The Company is developing its lead antibiotic, Oritavancin, for the treatment of serious gram-positive bacterial infections, including complicated skin and skin structure infections, or cSSSI, and bacteremia, a blood stream infection. Targanta submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2008 seeking to commercialize oritavancin for the treatment of cSSSI. Additionally, Targanta is developing a number of antibacterial agents currently in pre-clinical development. Targanta's strategy is to develop oritavancin into a leading therapy worldwide for the treatment of serious gram-positive infections, initially for the treatment of cSSSI and subsequently for other indications. Specifically, Targanta intends to: • • • • • • Obtain regulatory approval for oritavancin for the treatment of cSSSI in the U.S.; Build a hospital-directed sales force to commercialize oritavancin in the U.S.; Pursue clinical development of oritavancin in other dosing regimens and for additional indications; Submit a marketing authorization application (MAA) for oritavancin in the European Union and evaluate the potential for a blended commercialization strategy; Out-license oritavancin to third parties for development and commercialization in key Asian countries; and Pursue the development of other innovative antibiotics for the hospital market, either through in-licensing or internal development. The Company has operations in Cambridge, MA, Indianapolis, IN, and Montreal, Québec, Canada. The Company's common stock trades on the NASDAQ under the symbol: TARG. THE POSITION In this unique opportunity the Sales Training Director will play an integral role in Targanta’s first product launch by building and managing the field sales training program from scratch. This person will be responsible for the development and delivery of Training initiatives that contribute to the success of the first oritavancin sales organization. These responsibilities include ensuring all sales personnel have the knowledge and skills they need to effectively sell oritavancin and support strategic business objectives. Key Responsibilities include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • Accountable for ensuring the maximization of sales force competency & performance via Training and Development Manage the creation, development and execution of all field sales training programs Responsible for the creation of training content and the management of its delivery to the field representatives through the Regional Directors and regional training sessions Align training needs with the company’s business plan Set and manage the training budget Analyze and solve highly complex people performance issues, specifically at the Sales Representative level & develop alternative solutions to assist Regional Directors to resolve performance issues & maintain productivity Develop customized solutions to meet local needs where appropriate Manage the orientation process of new Sales Representatives to maximize the ramp-up of new individuals to the sales organization Collect metrics to evaluate training delivered to the field to ensure consistency, quality and effectiveness Current knowledge of trends within the training and development field and adopt new approaches as appropriate Facilitates instructor lead and virtual classroom training sessions Work collaboratively with MSL’s to assure consistent core messaging There will be approximately 25% travel Education and Experience Requirements: • • • • • • • • • • 8-10 years of pharmaceutical sales and marketing experience with a minimum of 5 years of sales training Bachelors degree required, Masters Degree a plus Training experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry a plus Strong planning and organizational skills Ability to work effectively with multiple levels of management Solid understanding of adult learning principles Business acumen Excellent communication/presentation skills, both oral and written Expertise in sales and training to ensure credibility with Sales Representatives Ability to multi task and handle multiple projects at one time
