Oakton HS Activities Office Summer Newsletter updated 8/4/11
From Director of Student Activities Pat Full
Another school year is right around the corner and many of our teams are busy training this summer for another successful
year. It is critical that you have a completed Physical (dated after May 1, 2011) on file in the Activities Office. You must also
have turned in an Emergency Care Form. A very important date to mark on your calendars is Tuesday, August 2, 5:00-
6:00 when we will verify that all fall athletes have correctly completed physical forms on file and emergency care
information to the coaches. This will take place in the cafeteria. At this time, individual fall coaches will distribute
any additional information on tryout and practice schedules.
                                                  FALL SPORTS TRYOUTS
Tryouts will begin on Tues., Aug. 2 for golf, Mon., Aug. 8 for Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheerleading and
Tues., Aug 9 for Field Hockey. (Dance Team tryouts were in the Spring.) All athletes must have an emergency care form
AND a doctor’s physical dated after May 1, 2011. The physical must be recorded on the official Virginia High School League
Physical Form. All forms are available in the Activities Office and the athletic website, www.oaktonathletics.org. Physicals
                                                      th
should be mailed to the Activities Office by July 28 . MAKE A COPY FOR YOUR RECORDS BEFORE MAILING IT IN.
(OHS Activities, 2900 Sutton Rd., Vienna, VA 22181) If you mail in the emergency care form with the physical, write the
sport(s) in the upper right hand corner so we can give it to the coaches. Athletes will not be permitted to try out without
these forms. REMINDER TO ALL ATHLETES: you may not participate in preseason conditioning or tryouts without a VHSL 4 page
physical form on file in the Activities office AND an FCPS Emergency Care Information form turned into your coach. If you had your
physical done at an FCPS school this May, June or August, it will already be on file in the Activities office.
This year every athlete and one parent of every athlete must take a short on-line test about concussions. The link to take this
is http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/concussioneducationfirst.htm
Once there, you will find a link for parents to take it and a link for the athlete to take it. Once the parent has completed the
slide show, it will issue a certificate. We suggest you print off a copy for your records. Your completion will go into a
database that the Athletic Trainer will have access to. After the athlete has completed the slide show, there is no certificate
to print. His/her completion will also go into that database. The Activities Office and the Athletic Trainer will use that
database to confirm that the concussion test has successfully been completed by both the parent and the athlete.
You will still need to turn in a VHSL physical form (if you took it at one of the FCPS schools this spring, we have a copy on
file) and an Emergency Care Information form (both are found here under Files and Links).
Tryout updates will be put on oaktonathletics.org in early August. Reminder: Mandatory drop-in “registration” for
all fall athletes (except golf) on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 5:00-6:00 in the cafeteria.
Physicals will be held at OHS on Aug. 4 for $50. Go to
http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/prefirstpageppeoverview.htm to register.

                                         OAKTON BOOSTERS NEEDS YOU NOW!
The OHS Athletic Booster Club supports Oakton Athletics and it needs your membership and support. The Athletic Dept. has
only 3 sources of income: gate receipts, fund-raisers, and Booster Club donations. The Booster Club donations are a critical
and essential component and are generated through membership and concession sales. For Oakton Athletics to continue its
era of excellence, the Booster Club MUST HAVE your support in these areas. Please join the Boosters ASAP and volunteer
to help with your time and talent. You won’t regret it and you will receive immense satisfaction from knowing you played a
part in Oakton Athletic success. Booster Club applications and information about volunteer opportunities are available in the
Activities Office and under “Files” on the Boosters page at www.oaktonathletics.org. There are also various new
sponsorships this year that include membership. We implore you to get involved NOW! You may start by contacting
Deirdre Canales at 703-476-2878 to inquire about membership and to volunteer to help her sell memberships and/or pass
out Booster passes on several dates in August including the Parent Meeting on 8/23 and the first two home events for F/JV
Football, Volleyball, Field Hockey and varsity Football. You may also email President Charles Durant at cwdurant@cox.net
or call him at 703-855-2385 if you want to volunteer with any aspect of Boosters (there is an URGENT and COMPELLING
present need for volunteers to run the Concessions program).
