the death of player Jose Perez and the continuation of
 his team’s season.

“This morning we lost a friend and fellow
athlete, José Perez. Our hearts and prayers
go out to his family and loved ones. We are
all devastated by this accident. José is from
the Dallas area and was a member of the FC
Dallas Youth Academy. He was selected as a
member of the U.S. under-17 national team
and was part of the national team residency
program. I worked for a little over a year to
get him to play for San Jacinto College. I
was ecstatic to have such a great player join
our team. He was a quiet guy but someone
you could joke with. His teammates respect-
ed him from the moment he stepped on the
field. We all knew he would impact the team
in a positive way… we had high hopes.
“Although he had other offers, he chose to
come here to play with a good team and get
an education, with goals for a degree and to
become a professional soccer player so he
could provide for his family and future child.
He was one of those kids who just loved soc-
cer. If the ball was rolling, he wanted to be
there with it… he was a playmaker. There’s
just no explaining this type of thing.
“Our team is grieving, and for right now,
we are suspending play. We will still honor
our conference games, and our team is unit-
ed in its passion to honor José, his memory,
