                                     Welcome to Introduction to Computers
STANDARDS:
1.1 Connecting students’ prior knowledge, life experience, and interests with learning goals.

6.1 Reflecting on teaching practice and planning professional development.

Course Description
This class offers instructions in the use of computers for personal use as well as office functions, educational
purposes, internet access and provides instruction in basic computer skills. This course is for those students who
want to demonstrate knowledge and acquire skills using Microsoft Office 2003.

Course Objectives: Students will be able to:
    Learn and Demonstrate basic computer components
    Developing basic computer skills
    Display basic word processing skills
    Using spreadsheet and graphics
    Send e-mail
    Access the internet
    Use educational and informational software

Text Book and Materials
    A USB or flash drive 128 MB or higher         USB= Universal Serial Bus
    Pen and pencil
    A notebook
    A folder with pockets or 3 ring binder to put completed assignments

Methods of Instruction:
This course will combine different methods of instruction, including class lecture, demonstration, handouts,
small groups activity, individual practice, one on one conference with the instructor, homework, class
presentations, related media demonstrations, discuss major current topics in technology.

Course Content:
      INTRODUCTION
            Describe the history and importance of computers:
                 Demonstrate and understand classroom policies and procedures.
                 Identify course objectives and goals.
                 Discuss methods of instruction used in this class
                 Discuss the function of computers
                 Explain the impact of personal computers on society
                 Discuss various uses of computers
                 Demonstrate how to care for computers

PERSONAL SAFETY
          Understand safety issues when operating a computer.
              Discuss and implement good safety practices
              Demonstrate correct typing technique and posture
              Demonstrate proper keyboard and monitor angle
              Discuss the benefits of periodic breaks to stretch and relax
              Types of stretches, wrist, neck, and shoulders
              Demonstrate the proper way to use a mouse

      BASIC COMPUTER COMPONENTS
           Recognize basic computer hardware components, terminology and understand system of
           communication

      BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS
           Recognize basic computer operations using the mouse, keyboard, printer and desktop.

      BASIC KEYBOARDING SKILLS
           Learn basic computer keyboarding

      BASIC WORD PROCESSING (Word)
           Demonstrate basic operation of word processing software.

      SPREADSHEET (Excel)
           Demonstrate basic use of spreadsheet software

     GRAPHICS (PowerPoint Presentation)
           Demonstrate the basic use of graphics software.
E-MAIL (ELECTRONIC MAIL)
           Demonstrate the basic use of e-mail software.

      BROWSERS
          Demonstrate the use of the Internet browser.

      INTERNET
           Demonstrate how to connect to and use of the Internet.

CONSUMER EDUCATION
         Understand consumer choices in personal computers and software: evaluate options according to
         budget and personal requirements.

              EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE AND RELATED INFORMATION SOURCES
              Examine and use educational software to improve academic skills, critical thinking, and problem
              solving skills.

       APPLICATIONS
            Use computers skills at home, in the community and at work to locate, interpret and use
            information.

                             100 points each assignment
             MICROSOFT EXCEL

Methods of Evaluation:
             All projects must be completed on time and printed
             If a student misses an assignment or test he/she can make it up the next class meeting
             Class participation is counted
             Performance on tests and quizzes
             Class attendance
             Behavior

GRADING SYSTEM:
          A = 90-100 %
          B = 80-89 %
          C = 70-79 %
          D = 60-69 %
          F = 0-59 %

      NO CHATTING ALLOWED

      RESPECT OTHER STUDENTS AT ALL TIMES

      NEVER TRY TO FIX A COMPUTER THAT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY

      NEVER PRINT MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT RELATED TO THIS CLASS

      DO NOT PLAY WITH ANY EQUIPMENT

      NO CD-PLAYERS, IPODS, OR CELL PHONES ALLOWED OR ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICE

      CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS BEFORE YOU LEAVE

      THE BELL DOES NOT DISMISS YOU, I WILL

                    CONSEQUENCES FOR DISOBEYING CLASS’ RULES.

      LOOSE PRIVILEGES TO USE COMPUTERS

      YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIAN WILL BE CONTACTED

      DETENTION AFTER CLASS
