Question 1 There is a difficult situation in the case provided by the student; Babatunde has promoted Li to a new management position. Since that promotion there has been conflict between Li and one of the engineers she is meant to be managing; Hsu, who has asked for a transfer to different team where he will not be answerable to Li. Li is a new manager and does not have a great deal of experience, and since Li has been told of the request the level of tension between her and Hsu has increased. Babatunde has to decide how to handle this situation. It may be argued that there could have been ways that the situation may have been avoided, Where there is change there will be resistance; and where one member of a team is gaining promotion over others, and an additional layer of management is being out into place the increased separation of the team members from senior management has the potential for resentment. By seeing the potential for personal issue to arise as a result of uncertainty Babatunde may have been able to reduce the potential for these clashes. Usual change management techniques could be of value, before a change takes place those effected need to be won over, this may have been achieved by talking to Hsu personally when the change was planned. His support may have been won over knowing of the change, what it meant to him, and instead of creating resentment it may have been possible to allow him to feel good about himself and important within the change as someone Li could rely on, giving support.
