Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Alert New Immunization Requirement All parents should be aware that pertussis (whooping cough) has been widespread in California and is especially dangerous for babies. The California Department of Public Health is recommending that all Californians 10 years and older receive the booster shot, known as Tdap (Tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acelular pertussis vaccine), to protect them against pertussis. On 1/1/11, Assembly Bill 354 became law requiring all students entering th th 7 , 8 , 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades, in the 2011-2012 school year, to provide proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school. Beginning July 1, 2012 and beyond, all students entering seventh grade will need proof of a Tdap booster before starting school. These requirements can be met by receiving the Tdap booster on or after the 10th birthday. If your child is 10 years or older and has not yet received the Tdap booster shot, please contact your doctor. Getting the Tdap booster shot now will protect your child against the ongoing threat of pertussis and will meet the new school immunization requirement that begins next school year. Adults are also advised to get the pertussis booster shot to protect themselves and their families. For more information, please contact your school nurse or visit the California Department of Public Health’s website: www.cdph.ca.gov.
