The Virtual Organization Part 1 The concept of the concept world is becoming more understood, it is the world in cyberspace, the virtual world does not have a physical presence and may be seen as anything from the entire internet to more specific areas such as the virtual environment such as those provided by World of Warcraft or Second Life. However, despite this increasing understanding of the virtual world there is no generally agreed upon concept of a virtual organization and there are a number of definitions which can be applied and may help a reader to identify the advantages and disadvantages of virtual organizations. Byrne (1993) defines a virtual organization as "A temporary network of companies that comes together quickly to exploit fast-changing opportunities", a different definition by Ahuja and Carley, (1999) states that it is "A geographically distributed organization whose members are bound by a long-term common interest or goal, and who communicate and coordinate their work through IT". These definitions, along with an understanding some of the benefits or advantages associated with a virtual organization. One of the first advantages it the lack of geographical locations in the physical world, this reduces barriers, true virtual organizations can theoretically undertake trade in any part of the world. There are no physical barriers. The same may be argued in terms of the members of the group, whether they are other firms, or employees, they are also not bound by physical locations. This may also facilitate increased levels of diversity within the members of the virtual organization, which is also proven to have potentially beneficial influences on an organization and its strat
