Atelier
*Free and Open to the public.
The Southern Atelier will host a series of Fire Side chats throughout the year.

The former director of the Cape Cod School of Art, Lois Griffel, will be
conducting a en plein air workshop at the The Southern Atelier in Myackka, FL,
March 3-7, 2008. Mudheads are the affectionate term for a figure backlit by the
sun, coined by Charles Webster Hawthorne. Hawthorne Founded the Cape Cod
School of Art in 1899.

After college and teaching in the public schools Lois Griffel felt the need
to concentrate on painting. She studied classical painting at the New York Art
Students League with great artists who included Ray Kinstler, Burton Silverman
and Harvey Dinnerstein. After moving to Provincetown, MA, in 1975, she
became close friends with Henry Hensche. "I watched him paint his beautiful
north light still Lifes while enjoying long discussions about art and painting. His
was the greatest influence on my painting which now combines my classical
background with the color of the impressionists." After stepping in as the
new Director of the Cape Cod School of Art she expanded the color principles of
her predecessors and since then has authored two books published by Watson-
Guptill, entitled, Painting the Impressionist Landscape and Painting
Impressionist Color.

Charles Hawthorne said: "Anything under the sun is
beautiful if you have the vision."

Atelier Miano- Master Class at the Ringling Museum- Ongoing
                    Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
“…it is at the museums where one learns to draw and paint.” Degas

A thematic practice of Old Masters studios was the procedure of master
drawing copy work or “drawing from the flat.” Atelier Miano has exclusive
access to the galleries of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
where artists spend months copying real old master paintings and ancient
statuary. Many principles such as blocking -in, the description of light and
value, and form modeling can all be readily understood in the way masters
have already translated them aesthetically. The main goal of this class is to
broaden an artist’s visual vocabulary and develop ones ability to see
                                  accurately.
            8 classes: $165 ACM members, $185 non-members
Students receive tickets which are redeemed for each class. Tickets are
valid for 3 months from the purchase date.
A model fee is collected at each class The fee is determined by the number
of students in the class. of students.
