THE G ATE Volume 2, Issue 1 • Fall 2009 • Newsletter of Greater Milwaukee A dmission P ossiblE Admission Possible Students Ready for a Rewarding Year F all signals the start of a new school year and for Admission Possible students, the excitement that comes with fulfilling their dreams of a college education. Over the course of the year, students will spend 160 hours in after-school sessions meeting with their Admission Possible coaches - recent college graduates serving as AmeriCorps members. They will now work diligently after-school college prep session. to improve their scores – so important for college admission - through months of ACT test preparation, and three additional practice tests, before taking the official exam in April of 2010. Meanwhile, high school seniors are busy perfecting their college and scholarship applications, and visiting college campuses throughout the Midwest. “These seniors will be the first graduates of Admission Possible Greater Milwaukee,” said Program Manager Kelly Schaer. “We are so excited to celebrate with them as they are admitted to college and receive scholarships.” In only two years in Milwaukee, Admission Possible has grown from serving 60 students to 140 students in four Milwaukee high schools, including its newest partner school, W.E.B. Du Bois High School. Admission Possible Receives Two National Awards I n September, Admission Possible received two national awards of excellence from associations representing the highest standards in the college access field. The National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) presented Admission Possible with its 2009 Human Relations Award, honoring an organization making postsecondary education opportunities available to underrepresented students. Two weeks earlier, Admission Possible received the National College Access Network (NCAN) 2009 Organization Award of Excellence, which recognizes the work of a college access program to improve access to and success in postsecondary education for first-generation, underrepresented and low-income students.
