Introduction
Across Five Aprils is a story of the Creighton’s who live on a
farm in southern Illinois. The story takes place during the five
Aprils of the Civil war from April 1861 to 1865. The main
character is a nine-year-old boy named Jethro. Their family is
torn apart due to the fact that of the two eldest brothers, one is
fighting for the north and the other for the south. Jethro gets
involved by writing a letter to the President Abraham Lincoln.
This novel explores the Civil War and the effects it had on one
family.
Task
You are going to begin by putting yourself in Jethro Creighton’s
place. Imagine you are him and your family is living in Southern
Illinois during the Civil War. The following tasks will help you
explore and learn the life of Jethro and others during the Civil
War.
Process
Step 1. Compare and contrast Jethro’s life before and after his
relatives leave to fight in the Civil War using a Venn Diagram.
Step 2. Review the timeline and choose a battle from the Civil
War that you will research and write about. Write a two-page
summary of that specific battle.
Step 3. By using the timeline as reference, label the map with
the appropriate battles or important events.
Step 4. Follow this link and review the pictures of the uniforms
that soldiers wore. Create your own uniform.
Step 5. Pick one song from the Union and one song from the
confederacy and compare the differences in lyrics and style.
Write in your opinion what you liked and disliked about each.
